radio coverage maps?

I know there's a site that shows the coverage area of certain radio stations. Does anyone have the URL for it? In particular, I'm trying to find the coverage area of AM stations WINE and WPUT.

But be warned. Those maps are only based on theoretical coverage and do not represent actual coverage (some of them are so far off...)
Even though Radio Locator insists they show the stations coverage area.

Speaking of which...

yesterday morning I was picking up WJR 760am out of Detroit around 5am, and I was wondering if that was unusual. I checked on radio locator and the coverage area displayed doesn't come close to RI.

Re: Speaking of which...

Sounds like you were hearing skywave from WJR. AM signals tend to bounce off the ionosphere at night and travel long distances.

I get WJR on the way to the station here in western Massachusetts with no problem some mornings. 1100 in Cleveland blows in here with a solid signal.
Even WLW in Cincinnati pops up occasionally. Love those skywaves.

I get WLW just about regularly here.
I also get WSB and WTAM as well.

While I am not going to list all I ve picked up,
I've received quite a few of the clear channel
(NOT the company, the night time radio service)
stations from the East of the Mississippi.

You were getting WJR on skywave (skip), which happens on AM at night, sometimes until just past sunrise in the morning.

Radio-Locator states that their AM coverage maps do not include skywave, only the original groundwave coverage.

WJR comes in here around Boston on skywave most nights (still in AM Stereo!), but it's gone shortly after the sun rises.

I got ESPN 1000 out of Chicago also Sports Radio 680 in Chicago(could be wrong about the 680) Some other stations I can get are WTOP out of Washington D.C., KDKA out of Pitt, PA also KYW out of Philly, PA.

The Chicago AM station is 670 (WMAQ-AM at one time). WTOP-AM 1500 is a strange setup. They also run another AM station in the area and an FM station (in VA?). I think I picked up the weaker AM early one morning here in New Britain. Lastly, picking up KYW-AM 1060 is tougher than you might think. Depsite being only 200 or so miles away, you have interference from WTIC-AM 1080 (depending on the quality of your radio and which way you've got your antenna facing). Also, the station is nulled towards the northeast to protect nearby WEPN-AM 1050 of New York City.

Yep...those are the classic "clear channel" (not the company) blow torch signals. Has anyone seen the Scott Frybush "tower sites" feature? They have some shots of the WBT 3 "diamond" towers....with one dating back to the 1930's As a kid growing up in New Britain, I was really impressed when the PD of (then) WHAY, Ray Lawrence, took me to the transmitter site in farmington. No building there in 1964..just the transmitter shack with a transmitter that had water-cooled finals. Amazing. the stations I work at now have an old Harris 1Kw they're thinking of getting rid of. The old Harris with 833's in it. I want to give it a good home in my basement and put it on the air on the 160m amateur band. That'll blow a neat signal and heat up my basement. Wonder what the neighbors would think??? Mute point since my wife doesn't like the idea. Fooey. Anyone else have some memories of tower sites in CT....like the legondery WTIC site on Avon Mountain and West Peak in Meriden. Ok, I'll really date myself this time...I worked the old 93.7 signal in the late 60's when it was called WLAE-FM. "Lend an Ear" Studios were in the transmitter shack on West Peak that also held the automated WHCN system at the time. WLAE had an ancient FM transmitter with glowing finals...especially when the bays ices up. Across the parking lot was (and still is) the WDRC FM site. Wow...digging deep in the grey matter for this stuff.

A really good test of any radio is when you can receive 50kw 1150 WRVA out of Richmond,VA anywhere in New England. Up here in western Mass, WBAL sounds like a local at 5am in the morning when I'm writing up my morning news. I keep it on in the newsroom...drives the PD nuts. But they have an interesting morning show.

Re: Speaking of which...

WRVA is 50 kW, but on 1140...
