If 104.5 were to dump Alternative, it would be no big loss to the listening public and no big loss to the advertising community.
Neither of those things are factors in the decision.

No argument there, of course, but in this particular thread, it seems like we're all just re-posting paraphrased versions of what we already said. Five pages worth, at this point. This morning, I looked at the first page and thought to myself 'This all could have ended after, like, the fourth post.' 🤣I mean, yeah, sometimes the same topics can get redundant, but it IS a board about discussing radio, and it's cool to hear people game out how they think the radio market will shake out, no matter how improbable it may be.
O...M...G...96.5 would pick up alternative if 104.5 dropped it in a heartbeat
96.5 would pick up alternative if 104.5 dropped it in a heartbeat
A tale I've heard multiple times in recent years but have not been able to prove the validity of is that after the CBS Radio merger closed, Entercom put Alternative on 96.5-HD2 just so David Field could listen to one of their own stations and not Radio 104.5, which was a personal favorite of his. The few times I heard the HD2, it was running the same music as 104.5 on a 30-45 minute delay. That's the funniest post I've seen all day.
Because of course Audacy is doing such a great job with alternative right now. Especially in LA.
If they really want a 1 share station, they can save themselves money & heartache by staying with CHR.
The last thing they want is to fail with the CEO's favorite format in his hometown.
WRFF has long been an underperformer, never getting above a 3-month average of 3.8 since 2017. Its biggest problem is revenue as it has always had a power ratio around 0.5, and with the last year averaging a 2.4 share, this is not a well performing station and has not been in recent memory. But all of this is for naught. iHeart is not prepared to blow up WRFF over a few bad monthlies mostly attributed to poor meter placement.
91X still plays a handful of currents. True, they are sparsely scheduled. It has the same brand, same jocks, even the same imaging voices. You are correct that the music changes there are significant.
So, to confirm, 104.5 in your view should do next to nothing in an effort to improve ratings?
They could always donate the station, take the tax write off and move on.Just checked out their playlist and am rooting for them. Some bold choices that I never would have expected from a commercial terrestrial station in 2022:
...plus all the usual suspects in Nirvana, Green Day, etc. But, that's something I'd love to hear in Philly. Combination of Lithium, First Wave, and The Spectrum on SXM.
- Violent Femmes "Prove My Love"
- Cure "Lovecats"
- Smithereens "Blood and Roses" (personal favorite)
- Soundgarden "Rusty Cage" (at 6am? wow)
- Joe Jackson "I'm The Man"
- Big Audio Dynamite "Rush"
- Queens of the Stone Age "Little Sister"
Also like that they're spinning Nathaniel Rateliff. Criminally underplayed artist here in Philly.
classic polka 1210Somebody gonna start talking about how WPHT should blow their format up?
It used to be iHeart's Active Rock format, which actually pulled a tiny bit of listenership. Here's an idea, put classic alt on the HD2.
I honestly forget what is clearing on it now.
lmao, this sounds like the 96.5 thread all over again.
So, what's next.

As you notice, WTDY hasn't changed. You can expect the same for WRFF.
All the format options are another version of wishful thinking.
That is a very interesting point, If 1045 went away I don't think anyone would leave the Philadelphia market without an alternative format. That was a mistake when WPLY was flipped and 1045 was born and exploded. 96.5 would be a likely candidate to jump on the format as soon as 1045 dumped it, but in a much different way. Then again is 1045 really going anywhere until a few more books come out and even then maybe they are satisfied no matter what, time will tell.96.5 would pick up alternative if 104.5 dropped it in a heartbeat
