radio format change at 104.5?

I mean, yeah, sometimes the same topics can get redundant, but it IS a board about discussing radio, and it's cool to hear people game out how they think the radio market will shake out, no matter how improbable it may be.
No argument there, of course, but in this particular thread, it seems like we're all just re-posting paraphrased versions of what we already said. Five pages worth, at this point. This morning, I looked at the first page and thought to myself 'This all could have ended after, like, the fourth post.' 🤣

96.5 would pick up alternative if 104.5 dropped it in a heartbeat

That's the funniest post I've seen all day.

Because of course Audacy is doing such a great job with alternative right now. Especially in LA.

If they really want a 1 share station, they can save themselves money & heartache by staying with CHR.

The last thing they want is to fail with the CEO's favorite format in his hometown.

A tale I've heard multiple times in recent years but have not been able to prove the validity of is that after the CBS Radio merger closed, Entercom put Alternative on 96.5-HD2 just so David Field could listen to one of their own stations and not Radio 104.5, which was a personal favorite of his. The few times I heard the HD2, it was running the same music as 104.5 on a 30-45 minute delay.

But all of this is for naught. iHeart is not prepared to blow up WRFF over a few bad monthlies mostly attributed to poor meter placement.

WRFF has long been an underperformer, never getting above a 3-month average of 3.8 since 2017. Its biggest problem is revenue as it has always had a power ratio around 0.5, and with the last year averaging a 2.4 share, this is not a well performing station and has not been in recent memory.

The problem with meter placement is that it can take up to 24 months for such issues to self-resolve unless Nielsen removes the household for some other reason. And, at present, Nielsen is even extending well performing dwelling unit metered groups beyond 2 years due to recruit issues and meter shortages.

91X still plays a handful of currents. True, they are sparsely scheduled. It has the same brand, same jocks, even the same imaging voices. You are correct that the music changes there are significant.

So, to confirm, 104.5 in your view should do next to nothing in an effort to improve ratings?

Just checked out their playlist and am rooting for them. Some bold choices that I never would have expected from a commercial terrestrial station in 2022:
  • Violent Femmes "Prove My Love"
  • Cure "Lovecats"
  • Smithereens "Blood and Roses" (personal favorite)
  • Soundgarden "Rusty Cage" (at 6am? wow)
  • Joe Jackson "I'm The Man"
  • Big Audio Dynamite "Rush"
  • Queens of the Stone Age "Little Sister"
...plus all the usual suspects in Nirvana, Green Day, etc. But, that's something I'd love to hear in Philly. Combination of Lithium, First Wave, and The Spectrum on SXM.

Also like that they're spinning Nathaniel Rateliff. Criminally underplayed artist here in Philly.

They could always donate the station, take the tax write off and move on.

lmao, this sounds like the 96.5 thread all over again.
So, what's next.
Somebody gonna start talking about how WPHT should blow their format up?
As far as WRFF being softer, I've heard they were always like this.
And really, with MMR, XPN and MGK , where else could they go?
Yes, I like the classic alt, but that'd piss people off if RFF did that too.
Here's an idea, put classic alt on the HD2.
I honestly forget what is clearing on it now.

There is a Country argument to be made for 104.5. First, WXTU's signal is lacking in South Philly and in some of the northern suburbs. 104.5's signal does not struggle as much, it seems. Secondly, it gives iHeart a chance to clear Bobby Bones in Philadelphia. Third, given the doldrums of the Alternative format nationally, I suspect a Country station would improve revenue.

Let’s end this talk about 104.5 changing it has been said here before I heart isn’t gonna flip the station over a few down books it’ll be spring and summer and the Ratings to alt 104,5 will trend back up

That is a very interesting point, If 1045 went away I don't think anyone would leave the Philadelphia market without an alternative format. That was a mistake when WPLY was flipped and 1045 was born and exploded. 96.5 would be a likely candidate to jump on the format as soon as 1045 dumped it, but in a much different way. Then again is 1045 really going anywhere until a few more books come out and even then maybe they are satisfied no matter what, time will tell.

So now two posters think Audacy would dump WTDY in favor of this format?! In what alt reality (see what I did there?) would this happen? When iHeart comes up with something to do with 104.5 FM that will make more $ens$e for them, they will gleefully pull the plug on Alt. No one is going to think twice--actually, no one is going to think even once--about picking up this format that has been an albatross around iHeart's neck for way too long. And certainly not Audacy at 96.5 FM! They can sell based on WTDY's format/numbers. It may well be Field's favorite format but he's a businessperson. And he has others to answer to. Geesh, the entire sales department would probably resign in protest.
