Radio in Ireland

I will be traveling to Ireland in a couple weeks and renting a car, and I am wondering where to find the best stations. My taste generally is very much like what is played on BBC Radio 1.

I have heard of Dublin's FM 104 and nationwide 2FM.

Any other good ones? I am going to be staying in County Kildare.

Thanks!

You do seem to be jetting around the planet a lot of late...! 8)

Ireland has six national networks on FM, one of which (2FM) is very similar in concept to Radio 1 if a bit less 'cutting edge' at night. It's provided by the public broadcaster RTE which fills a similar role to the BBC in Ireland.

There are also a number of regional and local broadcasters, although in rural areas (like County Kildare) stations may get a bit thin on the ground, and generally speaking local commercial stations in Ireland aren't as CHR-oriented as in the UK - they tend to target an older (and broader) audience. Here's a projected bandscan of the strong stations in and around the town of Kildare. The more powerful 10kW Dublin stations may be audible too, as might be some local stations from the surrounding counties, (e.g. KCLR on 96.9 from Carlow)... Dublin itself also does have a number of small community licences (and a few pirates) which I haven't listed.

Phantom 105.2 in Dublin I personally think is one of the best rock/alternative stations out there, and definately worth listening if you like that sort of thing ;) . If you like dance, Spin 103.8 might be worth a listen.

KILDARE:
89.1 RTE Radio 1 (varied)
91.3 RTE 2FM (CHR, varied)
93.5 RTE Raidio na Gaeltachta (gaelic varied)
97.6 KFM (AC, oldies, local)
98.7 RTE Lyric FM (classical)
100.9 Today FM (AC, talk)
107.6 Newstalk (news, talk) - limited coverage

DUBLIN - citywide licenced stations only: (* = 10kW)
88.5 RTE Radio 1 (varied)*
90.7 RTE 2FM (CHR, varied)*
92.9 RTE Raidio na Gaeltachta (gaelic varied)*
96.7 RTE Lyric FM (classical)*
98.1 98FM (AC)*
100.3 Today FM (AC, talk)*
102.2 Q102.2 (oldies)
103.2 Dublin City FM (community)
103.8 Spin 103.8 (dance, CHR)
104.4 FM104 (CHR)*
105.2 Phantom FM (rock, alternative)
106.0 Newstalk (news, talk)*
106.4 Raidio na Life (gaelic community)
106.8 Country Mix (country)

If you have a DAB radio, there's also a limited coverage DAB network in and around Dublin, carrying a few stations, but generally speaking digital radio in Ireland is a new thing.

Thanks for all that info!

Phantom 105.2 sounds like something I'd especially like to check out.

I am going to be staying in Naas, County Kildare...about an hour from Dublin
