With Hurricane Irene expected to impact Connecticut this Sunday, I have a few radio memories of Hurricane Gloria that hit the state in September of 1985.
I remember listening to WTIC 1080 and WPOP 1410 which was all news at the time while working my first year as a letter carrier. WPOP was on top of its game that day giving WTIC competition. I remember WPOP interviewing the mayor of Hartford along with other interviews. Most important to me was the order given over WPOP and other media outlets recalling all letter carriers off the street and back to their offices.
Back at home in Bristol, I remember my folks listening to WBIS, Bristol's once local station until the station lost power. Also, my younger brother was listening to WPLR which was playing U2's "Gloria" over and over.
