Radio Versions That Annoy

Mix 92.9 here in Nashville plays what is apparently a custom edit of "Big Shot" by Billy Joel. The line "don't come bitchin' to me" has been changed to "don't come cryin' to me."

They have also been known to do a hack job on "Endless Summer Nights" by Richard Marx, cropping off the bridge and nearly all of the solo that follows that bridge. Not sure why they did that; maybe that was a Delilah edit. They don't carry Delilah anymore, so maybe that chop job is gone, too; that is, if they are still playing "Endless Summer Nights."

Billy Joel, "My Life." Even his greatest hits album contains the edit!
These days, most stations play a modified edit of "My Life" which includes the short piano solo which the original single version abruptly cut out (resulting in a very obvious hacked-off cymbal crash).

Some AC stations play a short edit of Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You", which cuts off the entire acapella beginning and starts abruptly with "...And I will always love you..."

But definitely the worst edit ever is the short version of Jackson Browne's "Stay"! Thankfully most stations have reverted to playing the entire live performance of "The Load Out / Stay".

If you don't play "The Load Out" it's just a pointless Zodiacs cover. You aren't going to do it better than Maurice Williams, so why bother to do it at all unless it's what the other song was leading up to, and the reason Browne's version isn't about what the Zodiacs' version was about.

I also prefer the album cut of "Baker Street", to the single edit. RIP Gerry.

Aslo, I hear some stations that play the single version also pitch it up by around 5%. So a shorter version is even fsater. That's just plain wrong. KLUV here in Dallas does it.

FYI.... 1.0 to 2.0, plus on pitch control WAS STANDARD in the hey day of Top-40.... Nothin' new, there...

A retrospective annoyance was Bob Seger's Ivory, because it fooled me into thinking that the version on Tales of Lucy Blue would also have the keyboard part, and it didn't, which I only found out after buying it.

True. But on AM Top-40 radio in the '60 and 70's I could see it. Pitch control on an FM station today that isn't back-timming to the top of the hour for news, just seems wrong. IMHO. 2-cents paid. Soapbox stashed. :)

Can't them youngsters just digital delay the TOH news by a few seconds?

And for that matter, can't they digitally speed up or slow down songs without changing the pitch?

(not that they shouldn't be taken out and horse-whipped for doing so, but should it be done is always a different question from could it be done)

Just heard the Martin/Zimmerman gunshot 911 call at same pitch-half speed the other day where somebody was trying to make out the words in the screams.

105.1 Denver does it to many classic songs too. It's a turnoff!

I agree 110%, no need to pitch up the music at all. Wish stations would play one of Gerry's lost oldies, "Days Gone Down", great upbeat song from 1979, which has not been heard on the radio, probably since 1980.

^ I have a Joe Donovan WHAS recording of "Days Gone Down", aircheck being from about 1996....last time I heard that on the radio.

But then again, that's what Joe's show was about...!

And on Oldies stations since the 1990s. Then KSMG-Magic 105.3 always sped up Sugar loafs "Green Eyed Lady", When I bought the Billboard 1970 CD, it sounded a little bit slower, I thought something was wrong with my CD player before I heard about pitch.

When I used to record Houston radio stations at my grandparents house, they had a late 70s Magnavox top loading cassette recorder which was a part of the Console Stereo system with built in 8-Track player, turntable, and AM/FM tuner. The tape deck was detached and could move to another unit. It had Separate Normal and Chrome Bias and EQ Switches (No Metal) but Metal tapes could be used in the Chrome position. The tape would always record faster and when you played it in another tape deck it would sound somewhat slower. I have a Sharp deck that records it slower and when you play the tape back it sounds faster.

But Jammin 103.1 Austin is notorious for speeding up their songs. Even the Police's "Every Breath You Take" is sped up.

Here is an alternate mix that some of you might remember:

In 1978 Capitol Records issued a EP sampler serviced to AOR stations to promote Sweet's forthcoming LP. The EP sampler was titled "Short And Sweet". One of the four cuts on that promo only EP were " Love Is Like Oxygen". It was a special AOR version that ran 4:32 and omits a segment of lyrics but leaves the final two minutes of the track intact. For reference, the stock 45 runs 3:46 and the LP version runs 6:49 http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb191/Fastphilly/sweet.jpg

Here is one for the Paul McCartney/Wings fans. The LP and commercial 45 of "Maybe I'm Amazed" clocked in at 5:11. Remember that disgusting radio edit at 3:43? This was one of the first 12" singles pressed by Capitol and it was a radio only promo item. I think that short version was issued later on reissue 45's, but when the record was current the short version wasn't availible commercially. I can't believe some seller on discogs wants $600 for it. I found my copy for much less ;D http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb191/Fastphilly/wings.jpg

You could also get ONLY the full-length versions of "Silly Love Songs" and "With a Little Luck" on the commercial 45s. Paul was pretty good about putting the full-length versions on the single. But buyer beware, the "DJ edit" (about 3:10 or so) of "With a Little Luck" is what you get on Paul's compilation albums All the Best and (I think) Wingspan, too. (I don't have Wingspan in my collection, so I cannot definitively comment on it.) Even the video for "With a Little Luck" was done with the short version. (As far as I can tell, no edit of "Silly Love Songs" has ever been commercially available.)

The single version of "Take it to the Limit" by the Eagles has an annoying (snip and clip) edit :06 edit about 3/4ths the way into the song. Was this really worth the labor?
Another truly sloopy edit was in "Young Americans" by David Bowie.

Add Falco's Del Kommisar to the list. Last time I heard the full length version was on now defunct KKPN 102.9 The Planet out in Houston which I recorded onto tape.

I'll take After the Fire's 1983 version anytime over Falco.

I believe Wings "Let 'Em In" is another radio edit version that was never issued commercially. The radio edit runs 3:47 compared to the commercial 45 that clocks just over five minutes. One of the worst edits I've heard is "Natural High" by Bloodstone. The entire instrumental break is edited out which led to an abrupt edit.

Branigan's version was never a single, so I'm guessing that it never received much airplay. Was it ever played anywhere?
