Radio Waves (Nov. 16 Edition) -- Must Read!

Because I'm not going to write a column for $0. I can write and I've been paid to write. I don't write columns for nothing.

I don't know you, or what you do......But if you aren't in radio sales I will Sh$t. That was so dirty it reminded me of every AE I have ever avoided in the halls between studio and Vending Machines

Maybe you should start a newspaper of your own and then you could pay yourself that $350.00 per column.

I do just fine running a freelance tech support business and playing live music for parties. But the challenge is out there. If someone wants me to write those interesting radio columns, I'll do it. I guarantee they'll be more interesting to a wider audience than what BF-T is writing these days.

FYI for the most part BFT's atricles are unresearched and he make up a lot of stuff! No one listened more than once to his show! A real reporter really researches a story!! a ::)

In case you haven't noticed, "norcalreps" is the latest ID for Verne White. Does this mean you are no longer posting as "Bill Drake," Verne?

So I saw the KFRC jock picture and sure enough there was Chris Edwards. I never heard his show, what shift did he have and was it the "Time Machine"?. He certainly looks lovely enough to join us here on "Energy".

I enjoyed a delightful lunch with Chris Edwards and Gary Mora yesterday -- Chris was an account rep for Classic Hits KFRC, and is now repping KCBS and doing very well. As is KCBS, by all reports.

You'll note that Bobby Ocean squeeeezed hisself inna that photo, too. Wottaguy!

What a guy Bobby Ocean! CBS stock is down to $4.54 a share in after hours trading! You all might want to call your broker and buy a thousand shares. When the bargain hunters come out tomorrow the stock is going to double in price without a doubt.

David Kaye and Norcalreps......the new Woodward and Bernstein of radio news!!!

I think I have a legitmate complaint about Ben Fong-Torres and his Chronicle columns. If he's going to write about radio broadcasting then the kinds of topics I brought up are what he should be writing about. If he's going to write about radio nostalgia of a past that will never come back, then he's on track.

I happen to think that radio is not yet dead, but BF-T is spreading the impression that it is by harping on how great it was, not how great it is.

Well, DavidKaye, you have finally convinced me that your motives are pure. I had original thought ill of you for whacking BFT but now I see your point. Radio is going through a rough time. The economy, in general, is going through a rough time. The stock market is going through a rough time. It is easy for anyone to declare that the present (and future) is dead and the past was great and maybe that's what most are doing to process everything that we are going through. But, in the end, I agree with you Mr. Kaye. I don't think radio, the economy, nor the stock market is dead, just suffering from a very bad, but not terminal, illness. This is the United States of America for goodness sake! We will get through this. Everything changes over time in order to survive and so too will radio. The past is the past. The great minds of these times will reinvent radio just like they did computers, telephones, etc. We need more POSITIVE tones now not the tire old negative ones we've been getting lately.

I don't know who David Kaye is, nor do I wish to. I only know that I would rather read Ben Fong Torres "nostalgic" prose than Mr. Kaye's boorish critiques about it.

"I do just fine running a freelance tech support business and playing live music for parties"

A mobile DJ and Geek Squad commando rolled up into one thrilling package. Shades of excitement.

Thanks to this thread, I am reminded of why I spend so little time here.

Earlier I gave point by point topic ideas and why I thought they were good topics. Do you disagree with those topic ideas?

Well, I've probably answered my own question because you yourself are rooted in nostalgia, too. For goodness sake, KYUU has been gone for an entire generation. Don't you like anything on radio today? Do you not have an interest in the radio that is rather than the radio that was?

If you've read Jeff McNeal's reminiscences about KYUU and his radio career, much of it wouldn't fall under the heading of "nostalgia" since that connotates good memories. Much of what he says is critical of radio in those days, various PDs, GMs, NBC (which owned KYUU), and so forth.

I'm not trying to kiss his a__ here, but in my opinion, Jeff was one of the better DJs from the 80s - funny, and a bit edgy too, as his email would indicate. Wish there were more airchecks of his work on the internet.

Uh...pardon the nostalgia.

Hey Boss Radio DJ who is Verne White? I am Norcalreps my name is Mike Case. I do agree that BF-T's articles leave a lot to be desired!

I don't know Jeff McNeal personally (great jock!), but I agree with him whole-heartedly. Radio has been killed by potato chip salesmen and bean counters. Just killed it. Gut shot the business and watched it die slowly, while investing their short term profits.

BFT doesn't get paid much of anything to write that column. He does NOT make stuff up and is a man of integrity. He does what he can with the little he is given. He also has a big heart.

David Kaye, you know a whole lot of nothing. I've spent over 20 years in the Bay Area radio biz and NEVER heard your name. Stop acting like you've spent any considerable time in major market radio. You may have had what alcoholics would term "a moment of clarity" and worked in some minor role somewhere in SF, but that would be about where you topped out. Stop criticizing others who've done far much more IN radio and FOR radio than you ever have.

Oh, gee, Mike! My mistake!

If you've never heard of Verne White, perhaps you should read the only two posts that you made on Radio-Info.com before slamming Ben:

> Re: 93/KHJ is Back! and it sounds great

> I have found this station to sound awesome! I love the airchecks and old radio commercials. No doubt it's the genius of Chris Edwards White the " Legends of Rock and Roll" guy heard live on Saturday nights and the guy behind the other great oldies sighs i love to listen to

> Listen on line or if youre lucky enough to live in Central Ca on 93.5FM www.khjradio1.com It's GREAT!!!!

What a strange coincidence! It just so happens that the last posts by "Bill Drake" on Radio-Info.com and the first posts by you were about (wait for it!) the exact same subjects.

...or perhaps I should just post the last message that you -- errrr, uh, I mean Verne White -- sent to me slamming BF-T, which was (surprisingly enough) worded almost exactly the same ... with the same spelling error in it!

By the way, are you any relation to Mike Case, the star football player at Clovis Christian (Verne's hometown)?

Oh, no question he was good. I remember him, too. But that was yesterday.

There is still great radio out there, and if this medium is going to survive, Ben Fong-Torres should be writing about what's going on now, not what went on then. That's the only point I'm trying to make. I've cited a bunch of examples of stuff going on now in radio that is exciting.

BFT doesn't get paid much of anything to write that column. He does NOT make stuff up and is a man of integrity. He does what he can with the little he is given. He also has a big heart.

As I've stated in the past, BF-T used to be a client of mine when I was in the call center business. My company, Pacific Answering, took his messages for years. We got to know him pretty well. None of what I'm saying is about him as a person. I'm writing strictly about the content of his columns. If you can't see the difference then I'd hate to be your friend because you'd be offended at everything I say.

David Kaye, you know a whole lot of nothing. I've spent over 20 years in the Bay Area radio biz and NEVER heard your name. Stop acting like you've spent any considerable time in major market radio.

Well, I wasn't exactly invisible, but there are tons of people whose names never made it above the noise. Mine was one of them.

Let's see, I worked with Tom Wilson (KSFO, KWUN, KVHS faculty), Tom Benner (KSFO now), Jim Hall (KRAK country DJ in Sacto), Clyde Calvo (TV engineer), Jerry Harms (KKIS, etc), Dave Evans (deceased CE of KALW and former Bill Drake operations guy at KYNO, et al), Ken Hobbs (KMUV and KTVU production director), Don DeFesi (who spent a lot of years doing news at KFRC), etc. These are just random names off the top of my head that I think you may have heard of, since they were all quite visible.

I also worked in the Portland market for a few years alongside legendary northwest talk hosts Jerry Dimmitt and Rick Miller.

My training was at CSM/KCSM in the same classes as Mike Amatori (KGO/KSFO) and Jon Miller (SF Giants).

Most of the other people I worked with have gone on to obscurity just as I have. That's the nature of not only broadcasting, but most careers. I spent 10 years in broadcasting over a span of 20 years. I've done production (radio and TV), some engineering, on-air DJ, news, and talk, sales, and PD briefly.

Now, who exactly are you?
