Raleigh/Durham Sports Stations

Now that WCMC "99.9 The Fan" is in its third week of operation, one thing I've noticed is an almost complete lack of promotion. The only promotions I've seen were inclusion of the logo and an empty desk at the WRAL Tent at the NC State Fair and the banner on the sports section of WRAL.com. Is anyone aware of any promotions they're doing? Conspicuously absent are TV ads, billboards and co-branding ON WRAL-TV or Fox 50. It's not like this was a spur of the moment format switch, either. I remember that the station's country format ran the better part of a year mostly jockless, which certainly didn't help them (signal issues, taking on a heritage station, and facing competition from a more powerful upstart aside). Perhaps there's a strategy of which I'm unaware, but it seems to the casual observer that they should come on strong with promoting the new station, especially given the fact they're facing two established competitors in the format. Capitol certainly has the tools to do some unique things with his station and its format, such as heavy cross-promotion with the WRAL Sports brand.

Two words RADIODZE..."Ardie Gregory". When 99.9 was country there were NO quarterly promotions, no sales oriented promotions, the broadcast van was never used and no appearances at concerts. The jocks just had shifts and that's it!
Oh...sales dept. didn't know how to sell country. No revenue...no country. Hello new format.

99.9 Genuine Country still has a billboard on I-95 near Smithfield.
Does that count as promotion?

That thing has been up for a good two years now. Can you even hear 99.9 that far south?

Yeah w00t I checked when we saw it, and you could hear it down there. Surprised me, too, because all I hear about 99.9 is "signal issues in Raleigh and south" much less 45 miles away and southerly.

I'm sure there are some purists out there who would complain about how it came in, but it sounded all right and clear for sports talk. ;D

Yeah, they knew the new format was going to be sports for a while, but I'm pretty sure the new PD was only in place for about a month before they lit it up. He had ta FULL plate putting all the programming in place and hiring the whole staff. I don't even know if/when the Promotions Director was hired and that's his/her gig. As for Ardie, she's the GM, not the Promotions Director. Granted, it was ultimately her responsibility to oversee that area, but where the hell was the promotions dept?

I know A.G. is the GM. What I was trying to say is that she didn't do "anything". She sat there and let the station die according to my sources. After Joe Wade Formicola was terminated there was no intention of bringing on a new PD. There was no PD for both stations for 7 months. The promotions dept. never really produced anything for 99.9. It was always for the cash cow, WRAL-FM.

As far as promotions go, 99.9 has had an ad banner on the Sports section of The Herald-Sun's online page for weeks now. And as far as old billboards go and reception issues, there used to be a billboard for "Genuine Country" on 421 between Buies Creek and Dunn, and if I recall correctly it was readable to southbound traffic (towards Dunn). I was never able to get a consistent signal of 99.9 in that stretch of Harnett County.

99.9 Genuine Country also has a billboard on I95 near Smithfield up to last Sunday.
You could hear it down there, maybe they were promoting it out in more rural, cheaper areas....

Find it hard to believe that Capital would do no promotion on their investment. These guys play hard and win. Something smells wrong.

Ask any of the guys that worked at 99.9 when it was country and the'll tell you the same thing. No promotions, no quarterly promotions, very few remotes, no appearances at concerts, no community involvement, no P.D. from Otcober 2006 to April 2007. When the new P.D. came in there were NO staff meetings until sometime in July when, in their only staff meeting, the air staff was told that 99.9 would be changing formats and that all of the announcers needed to start looking elsewhere...

Maybe genuine country was just a filler format to get the signal off the ground, cause sports seems to use Capitol's resources better.....
