Rampant rumors of lineup shakeup

Forums over at xmfan.com are buzzing with reports that big lineup changes are coming next week. The buzz has been stirred by announcements of new XM channels at directv.com and by an entry in a blog on the Cincinnati Enquirer site by that newspaper's radio/TV writer.

Rumored to be coming to XM, at least on DirecTV: Music channels featuring "chill" electronica, '80s and '90s classic rock ("where Top Tracks leaves off") and current-hits-oriented hip-hop and r&b. The Enquirer blogger reports that XM will be adding a simulcast of WLW Cincinnati (Clear Channel's blowtorch AM talker) on Channel 173, minus sports programming to which XM doesn't have the rights. That last item is interesting because it's appeared nowhere else, as far as I can tell, including the Enquirer itself!

Reportedly out: XM Music Lab, which plays a mix of progressive rock and jam band music. It doesn't appear in DirecTV's new lineup at all.

I didn't think XM or Sirius could "simulcast" a commercial station like WLW because the Satellite services license is national programming not local based, and technically simulcasting WLW would be considered by the NAB anyway that being a locally focused channel even though its heard nationwide like the weather/traffic channels. Yeah I know XM used to simulcast "Kiss FM" KIIS-FM from Las Angeles when it first came on, but they don't do that anymore. Personally I don't care about adding WLW to XM because the station comes in where I live as a local station 24/7. Now someone on the West Coast wanting to listen to WLW, then it would be a cool thing for them.

Here's the link to the Enquirer Blog...

I hope I'm not misinterpreting this and they're CHANGING channels rather than ADDING channels. The piss poor sound quality can't go any lower...AM would sound better.
______________

Sirius simulcasts WSM(AM) Nashville.

XM and Sirius cannot broadcast anything specificly in one market, i.e. broadcasting Dallas traffic only in Dallas. As long as it airs nationwide they are fine.

BTW. The sound quality s fine on my SkyFi 1. Sounds beter than local FMs.

WSM on Sirius is no longer a simulcast. It is now a new channel called "WSM 111," which is moving to a new channel soon when Cosmo radio starts.

note to the NAB..satellite radio..its worth paying for!!

It is a done deal for the Chill Channel, it will begin Wednesday as "The Chill" XM 84. I cannot wait, I really hoped XM would start up a Chill channel with Sirius having one and the growing popularity of the genre.
______________

It's a mix of downtempo, electronica, a little techno, and depending on how XM programs it a little Smooth/Acid Jazz leaning. The only FM station that does it full time in the US is Blu 102 in Santa Fe. CD 101.9 in New York actually tried a variation of Chill from November of '04 through last August. It's one of my favorite genres of music right now and it's growing in popularity here after starting over in Europe.
______________

music played in porno movies would be the easiest way to describe it. Back when the cable company was required to black out the audio of Playboy and Spice they used to run KLON Long Beach ontop of Spice and a chill feed ontop of playboy. We got both on the FM hookup.
______________

Interesting news!Might have to sign up again.
Will this channel stay pure like the Exhale show was?I have read a few comments that Sirius mixes in a lot of Pop on Their Chill channel.
Knowing the way XM operates I am afraid they will ax CH77,I hope not but this will be of equal importance to what they are adding is what will they delete.

So far, speculation on the fan boards centers on XM Music Lab (progressive rock/jam bands) and The Flow (neo-soul), since neither appears on the updated DirecTV lineup that was briefly on the Web prematurely. No word on whether anything in the news/talk/sports block will be dropped to make room for the WLW Cincinnati simulcast (which today was confirmed in the Cincinnati Enquirer).

Ambient, jazz fusion/smooth jazz, some r&b-type music. Like Zero 7 meets Bjork meets Common.

I was hoping 100.3 here in the Twin Cities would be a 'chill' station after dumping their smooth jazz for talk.

Damn, I love The Flow. I hope it's not true.
______________
