Randall Bloomquist out at 640 WGST

David Hull has been around since the early days of the original Georgia Network (Don Kennedy version). Loyalty and longevity don't mean squat in the radio business but hey, you already knew that!

David Hull and Matt McClure were dismissed from the WGST news department. It's interesting that they were the two finalists for the AP best newscaster award last year which McClure won, so obviously CC wasn't terribly interested in the quality of their product when they made their layoff choices.

More experience costs more. Who is left in the news department... if we can still call it a department.

CC does not care about experience believe me they don't pay more for it either... they would be happy with a person just out of school who is just happy to be "one the air" that way they can pay them 7 bucks and hour to do the news .. you would think in a large market experience would matter to them but it doesn't.. which is proven in it's ratings how well that works for them. They do not care about the quality of the product they put on the air. Randall B was a joke.. he did nothing for the cluster let alone GST he just sucked up CC's money it was past time for him to go.. wonder where he will land. I feel bad for the other on air people there isn't really to much of a job market here in ATL . Radio blows.

David Hull brought wit and personality to the Morning Drive...something Randy desperately, desperately needed there.

I'm fairly certain wit and personality are not in the Clear Channel playbook. Down the road... Randy is a placeholder until CC can land a syndicated morning show probably before his contract expires in the spring. WGST will throw in some local news filler in morning drive only, and run Fox during the rest of the syndicated day to cut costs, meaning there will be more departures from the news "department" by the first of April. All a part of Clear Channel's master plan to centralize programming as much as possible and keep local radio station staffs to a minimum. Anyone who was hoping WGST might once again be a player in Atlanta news/talk are just SOL. If "local radio" is going survive it will more than likely be the work of the independents and smaller companies who can react with more flexibility and quickness to changing conditions than bloated monstrosities like CC.

"All a part of Clear Channel's master plan to centralize programming as much as possible and keep local radio station staffs to a minimum".

It's a model that works for public radio. I wonder when CC will start doing pledge drives?

So the Mays brothers, displaying an abundance of compassion, have agreed to slash their annual salaries to 500K...each. I think it is a pitiful commentary on the state of the American economy that the leaders of such a proud and successful corporation as Clear Channel are forced to live in squalor. Lets compare what the company could get for its million bucks:

30 productive working stiffs who actually contribute something VS
2 worthless execs with a portfolio full of mind numbing poor decisions.

Looks like a slam dunk to me. Good luck, boys, putting food on the table. I WISH I could feel your pain.
