Randi Rhodes joins Premiere Radio Networks

http://www.radioink.com/Article.asp?id=1289667&spid=24698

LOS ANGELES -- April 23, 2009: Premiere Radio Networks adds The Randi Rhodes Show to its lineup of nationally syndicated shows, beginning May 11. The show will broadcast live from Washington, DC, and early affiliates will include KTLK/Los Angeles, KKGN/San Francisco, and KPOJ/Portland, OR.

"Randi has carved a niche in talk radio with her straight-forward approach, intelligence, wit, and fact-driven content -- qualities that attract audiences," said Premiere EVP/Affiliate Marketing Julie Talbott. "We can't wait to deliver The Randi Rhodes Show to stations nationwide."

Rhodes said, "Right now, America needs a voice that reflects its hopes and concerns. It will be my privilege and pleasure to provide vital information to the public about everything that is possible in the 21st century, and also have a few laughs along the way. Premiere is an incredible family of radio pros, and is truly the most talented and experienced radio syndicator in the nation. I'm exited about this decision and Premiere's enthusiasm for this partnership. It's truly a dream come true

Very interesting. This sounds like a huge step up for Randi; Premiere is one of the biggest players in talk radio syndication.

This will be the test to see if Progressive Talk can stand on its own two feet. I've gotten into some rather interesting discussions with with one Rhodes supporter in particular, who maintains that if Progressive talk was given support equal to what is behind the conservative shows, it would prosper.

The initial roster doesn't break any new ground, but puts her back on a few stations where she is a perfect fit. What will be more interesting is to see if Premiere can open new doors, and if those opportunities translate into success.

It's actually not a test of anything. Randi Rhodes has already passed the test that matters--the ratings test--in numerous major markets, including the nation's number one market, and she is being given her just reward. Congratulations Randi--you earned it. Period.

The real question is can Randi Rhodes stay out of her own way?

That and will she keep the painfully unfunny "bounce your boobies" crap up on Friday.

Will she be on XM? 165 has a Glenn Beck replay on from 3 to 6, they could put her there.

"The only two Liberal Talkers that are turing a profit is Ed Schultz and Stephanie Miller."

And you know this how?

They had him delayed 6-9 p.m. after Ranti's ranty show, so it should work.

Randi will be back in afternoon drive on WJNO. Take it to the bank.

They'd be silly not to. Actually I think she might get onto a surprising number of stations, but not because of her liberal slant or really anything to do with her show. Clear Channel by the end of the year will have a very "national" feel as local hosts are replaced by CC/Premiere syndication or mandatory voice tracking in music formats. So she will displace local shows strictly as a cost savings, and will also displace other non-Premiere syndication to keep the cash in-house.

The genesis of this deal was probably just that CC figured they could use her in Burbank and Oakland, er, uh, LA (0.6) and San Fran (0.7)(sorry) and this way she didn't come off of either station's payroll. Anything else is gravy.

I find it odd that 'JNO hasn't apparently announced her return (to their station) or made a big deal about it.

Theoretically, you're right, of course. She had a long, long, successful run for that station. Even when she went to NYC and AAR, she still voiced local spots for her sponsors there (thus, continuing to make money for them even after she went national, much like Rush Limbaugh has done for Sacramento since 1988!).

I'm curious how Hannity has done in her old time slot, but unless I'm missing something, Randi's return to WJNO's 3-6 PM slot should be a no brainer.

"According to the December 30th 2008 TRI Newsletter states that Stephanie Miller and Ed Schultz are the only two Lib Talkers that are turning a profit."

Never heard of that newsletter and don't believe it. Let me be clear. I'm sure Stephanie and Ed are making a profit, but I'm also sure they aren't the only ones. Dial Global is run by smart people, who have also been airing Bill Press for the last couple of years, and I doubt they have been taking losses all that time. Same for Thom Hartmann, who was recently acquired from Air America by Dial Global--I could hardly imagine them taking on a money-losing show.

I'm also quite sure that Randi Rhodes made a nice pile for her past syndicators, which is why she is now being picked up by the biggest syndicator of all--Premiere.

But I do appreciate you disclosing the source of your information, WillCall. It helps to foster an intelligent exchange of ideas here.

An addendum to my previous post. In spite of what I just said, I DO know what the T-R-I column is--I read it every day, but I think of it simply as "Tom Taylor's column." And I have a high regard for Tom's thorough and accurate reporting.

But, as I suspected, you got it wrong WillCall. I went back and checked the December 30th edition, and in no way does the column say that Stephanie and Ed are the only profitable liberal shows. Tom's piece on December 30th quotes Lesley University professor Donna Halper (she's also a former radio consultant--I once worked with her) as saying "Ed Schultz and Stephanie Miller both turned a profit again and both picked up more affiliates and were regularly seen on TV as pundits."

Nothing there about these two shows being the ONLY ones that were profitable. You need to do better, WillCall.

Randi back on XM

Happily, le Rhodes will return to XM as well, this time on 165, in place of the Glenn Beck replay.

Both clocks are the same too. 2/2 at the :15 and :45 is instead 1/3, and they compensate by sending the 2:00 nets to the bottom of the hour.

These days Premiere Radio doesn't typically like to put network spots at the bottom of the hour, figuring stations like to transition straight into the news. Rush Limbaugh's clocks were changed a year or two ago to reflect that. Glenn Beck hours 1-2 also have an all local bottom (hour 3 has a net :60 at the bottom, as the nets were strategically placed to accommodate Paul Harvey), as does Dr. Dean Edell. Sean Hannity is an exception, with a net :60 at the bottom, but his show is very commercial heavy with 19:20 local avails / 6:00 net avails / 34:40 program content.
