Rate Increase Coming

Taylor, reports a rate increase is on the way for Sirius/XM sometime in March; XM will start charging $2.99 for the broadband version and will be no longer included at the $12.95 rate. Taylor forgot to mention that the justification for the last rate increase was to combine the services; prior to that there was a separate charge for the online version.

The question should be: How many promises made to the FCC can Mel break before they get involved?
1. We were promised a $6.95 rate for those of us who only wanted a few channels.
2. Radios that would be able to receive both services were already headed to market (useless now!)
3. No rate increases
4. Sirius/XM would be operated separately

If Dish Network could add a few of the talk channels, Sirius/XM would be useless.

I like XM and pay for a year at a time. I have two receivers a portable and one for the car. I like XM but I don't know if I will stick around if there is a rate increase. A rate increase could cost XM more than it makes them in the long run if others feel the same way.

Taylor is Tom Taylor who has the radio-info newsletter that he sends out EVERY day...

Dish could technically offer the talk, but Sirius XM won't let them. Remember that DirecTV used to offer a couple of XM's talk offerings until new management decided they didn't want DirecTV giving away their top talk talent like that.

I can understand their plight but this is not the time for a rate increase. I would seriously have to look at canceling.

I got my email today about the rate increase. It mentioned my second unit, but didn't say anything about my primary unit that expires in April. What a rip. We were told we could choose a list of channels for $6.95 and that never happened. I supported the merger. I actually believed what they told us. I was a fool. It will be hard to trust them again.

Haven't you all learned that when it comes to mergers they will promise you the world but once the keys change hands, the promises all go into the garbage sack! It's just the way of the world. No Brag Just Fact!

What will happen to the online only subscription? It's now $7.95.

"Remember Krispy Kreme donuts? At one time all you heard was how incredible they tasted. Did they? To me they tasted chemically. Their glazed donuts tasted funny, not like a real glazed. Yet Krispy Kreme marketed the experience. Hot, fresh donuts. They were small so you could eat them in one bite if you dare. And they sold them in boxes of what seemed like a thousand so it was cool. They even had a sign in every store that lit up when the donuts were just made. But once the experience wore off, so did Krispy Kreme. If it was really about the taste, they’d still be where they were. But today it’s hard to find a store. In fact they just closed their flagship store in NYC leaving only two."

I read this in a pretty smart guy's blog once. Oddly, satellite radio comes to mind. The promise seems so good, but will it taste right by the time it comes to renew the subscription. Is this product leaving a funny taste in my mouth? I do wonder???

But a very good point was being made by this blogger - No matter what the promise, or how good the marketing, in the long run it is the quality of the product that what will determine its' fate. Time is ticking away...

I guess the Krispy Creme blogger has no idea why it failed. It never failed because people got tired of it, rather it's own greed and mismanagement.

And if you hate sat radio, why keep it? Never understood how people can complain about something and never do anything to remedy the situation. Call and ask to terminate teh service.

I don't know how much the online-only subscription is but it was free for mobile subscribers. I just got warned yesterday that is would be an added 2.95 per month after 3-11 but I could keep it free for the life of my current subscription if I went for a long term one. I did at about 145.00 for the next year. I won't do this again and the way they've been dropping XM programs left and right I'll probably drop the whole thing at the end of the year, Sirius XM is getting more and more boring. They are really screwing up XM IMHO.

Why does this make me chuckle and say ah ha? ;)

For what it is worth, Walter, I don't hate sat radio. In fact, I was very excited about it. I started with Sirius because I had a sense that they would be less "corporate", but ultimately I moved over to XM because of the variety and quantity of the music that was available. I also found that XM had the superior and more reliable delivery technology. Sadly, though, I am afraid the potential is being wasted. But before I call to terminate the service, I am going thru prudent and fair exercises to make my interests and concerns known to Sirius XM as a customer. If they respond favorably to me as a customer, then I'll remain one. It's as simple as that. I think that is doing something to remedy the situation. As a paying customer, I think I have the right to express my wishes. As a company, Sirius would be smart to listen and serve. Hopefully it doesn't become a "my way or the highway" kind of thing where our "ways" are different. I like having something different to listen to in the middle of nowhere...

Walter, you forget some people spent a good deal of hard earned money for XM radios; without the subscription, the radios are useless, you also forget some folks are locked into contracts they can't get out of.

The fact is Mel is the ultimate scam artist just like Madeoff, he not only lied to the federal government and his employees, but to his customers who likes to refer to as SPERM.

I bailed out the crap XM has turned into; but now I'm stuck with $400 in totally useless radios.

The Feds; have allowed another scam artist screw the consumer gain!

Your not at a loss Steve. You work in the business. Your radios are an expense, or at least can be written off as such, so you lost nothing. If you hate the service get rid of it. Best bet. I say if you hate Sirius, then cancel the service.

What does an XM subscriber need to do to just maintain the radio service and not have the online access, so as not to be charged extra? Can't seem to get this info.

I believe you will get online access at your current rate until your subscription expires. Then you will loose it if you don't pay the extra charge. So you will pay the same amount but get less. If you renew your current subscription BEFORE the online rate increase, your cost and service will stay the same. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.
