FALL 1983, Persons 12+
(This was the 2nd #1 book for KIIS, and their 5th straight up book.)

KIIS-FM's big number and KNX-FM's small one make it really clear why KNX-FM flipped to KKHR in August of that year.

I'm surprised KROQ wasn't bigger than a 2.6.

Wow! KHJ had a 13.0 share in 1968. That is incredible!!

Michael and Domingo,

What a kick to see those old call letters, formats and ratings from back in the day! Thank you both very much! You are truly scholars of LA Radio.

Domingo: The originals are pretty fragile and locked away. I've transcribed them into a notebook and will post them here starting tomorrow.

If you have any interest in preserving as well as making accessable this data I can provide room for it on www.americanradiohistory.com and create a market by market page where ratings data, preferably scans of the originals, can be placed.

Ah...AM radio before the days of FM domination and all of the computer interference.

Interesting to see the numbers for KWKW back when it was at 1300 on that directional signal. ;)

Thanks for posting these, Michael. Very interesting reading for somebody like me who was a radio junkie as teenager in the late 60s and early 70s. I was not aware of how the stations were rated at the time, though I knew KHJ and KABC tended to dominate. A couple of comments:

We've talked in a different forum about KRLA's "Music Power" format in 69-70, and about how that usually clueless station gave KHJ a run for it's money for awhile. Their ratings improvement between 68 and 69 seemed to show it was working.

Though aging hippies and other old early 70s AOR radio fans talk lovingly about KMET (and briefly KPPC), my memory has always been that the most popular AOR station in the early 70s was KLOS. The ratings here indicate that was true. I guess it gives further proof that tight playlists usually win out - KLOS's "Rock N' Stereo" format was AOR to a point, but was very hit-driven.

Llew:
It was KLOS that made FM rock mass-appeal, playing a lot of hits (and a few key cuts) in stereo when KHJ was mired in Donny Osmond, Gallery, John Denver and Helen Reddy. It claimed the 18-34 year olds first (they were old enough to remember back in '67 or '68 when KHJ played what mattered)...and then the teens.
Of course, by the end of the decade KLOS got blown away by KMET, which still wasn't a tight-playlist operation...they succeeded on attitude.
And then came KROQ, which made its own hits.

---Michael Hagerty

Interesting analysis regarding 70's and 80's rock radio. Rolling forward, one could say that it was KPWR that made hip-hop mass appeal. It did for hip-hop what KLOS did for rock.
