Ratings, are you kidding me?

We just had the biggest success radio story for Philly radio in years, yet the discussion on the ratings here is about some Christian AM with a .4? WHAT? I don't want to go on further since I might be making fun of someone with a mental deficiency which would explain talking about a .4 am and not a new station that just hit a homerun.

Boom 1079 blasts into the market in its first month with a 3.8 12+, but the real story is that they are 4th 25-54 and 18-49. I can remember not too long ago the talk from the bigots about how "rap music" doesn't appeal to adults. The same who say pop and Swift's music is for teenyboppers, when z100 kiis are either #1 or #2 25-54 every book.

I think a message board reflects the interests of the people who post on it. But you're absolutely correct, that the real radio story in Philly is a great move by WPHI. It really stands out when you look at the 6+ numbers, as does the Christmas bump for B101.

Taking nothing away from Jerry Lee and his More fm(tho like you most people who listen to it every day still think it is b101-quite telling is that), they own Philly come Xmas time and while everyone can win with being the heritage Xmas station, they really do milk every ratings point out of it.

For WPHI the 6+ is very nice, but it's that #4 showing in the key sales demos of 25-54 and 18-49. In only 1 month of existence they are beating many heritage stations with full market signals in those key demos. They are doing a great job with it, but I believe that it could be slightly more mainstreamed and maybe get even better #s. Hard to fault them with how they have done it, the ratings cannot be denied.

Maybe. This is Radio One, so they're probably not interested in mainstreaming it. CC, on the other hand, might. They have a couple "old skool" stations around the country that have a more mainstreamed version of PHI's format.

Jammin Gold showed promise early, too. Let's give it a bit of time to see whether or not it's a flash in the pan.

DOA: Why did you feel the need to split things and start a separate thread - thereby dividing discussion of the recent beauty contest "ratings?" Maybe the moderators will correct your error and merge the threads.

I never heard of the station you are so enthralled with (and possibly work for). And anybody who doesn't like "hip hop" in your view is "racist?" No, anybody who doesn't like it has a modicum of taste in music. Or maybe they just don't appreciate hate lyrics.

I thought the same thing...I'm like why are people only talking about a AM station with a .4 but its bigotry at its finest

Exactly!! and one thing about Old School Hip-Hop stations is that they're cheaper to run then Urban stations

No. "Bigotry at its finest" a station presenting itself as a Black radio station (or trying to be coy by using the euphemism "urban"). What would happen if somebody decided to call themselves a White radio station? Or talk about programming for "the White community?"

It's also bigotry (not at its finest) to associate bad music with a particular race.

Because he wanted to get that redundant one-sided word bigoted in the mix...

I don't know if you really care or not, but this is the first post that I totally agree with you 100 percent...

DOB, you questioned why would someone discuss an AM religious station that got a 0.4 rating and ignore some other FM station that got a 3+ rating and they're brand new?

Easy answer: I asked the question because that religious AM station was placed with a station that did have a 4.0 rating and wanted to be sure it was correct for the religious station. As it turned out, the religious station did only get a 0.4 and should have been listed at the bottom of the ratings. Mystery solved.

The other part of the answer is I'm interested in religious radio stations as one of my favorite stations to listen to isn't an OTA station, but an online station called Lutheran Public Radio. Family Radio's beliefs [WDKN 950] I do not agree with, but they play some nice Christian music which I do enjoy. So I'll tune in, especially at Christmas to hear a more worshipful type of Christmas music than the Santa Baby/ Rein Deer / Frosty songs the secular stations tend to favor.

As far as this new FM station is concerned, [1] I didn't know it flipped formats [didn't like its previous format so never listen to the station, plus I definitely do not like Rap "Music" so I'll not be tuning in.

That doesn't make me a racist? Do you like Polkas? If you don't does that make you a racist against Polish people? If Rap floats your boat, that's great for you. My guess is you also don't like the more classical/orchestra/choir sounds of a Family Radio or a Lutheran Public Radio, so does that make you anti-Christian? You may prefer the Urban Gospel music on 1510 WFAI or 1110 WNAP, both play Christian music, but a different style of Christian music than a Family Radio or a Lutheran Public Radio, all serve a segment of the Christian community.

So don't be so fast to label someone a racist, because frankly you may actually be the racist. If you remember the old TV show All in the Family, or course Archie Bunker was a racist, but so was his neighbor George Jefferson. Racism isn't a white only thing. Sadly its part of the human condition.

I like Jazz / Swing music so I like the music of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Galaspy, Louis Armstrong, etc, etc, just like I like Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Woody Herman [these three were all Jewish by the way], etc, etc. It ain't the color of the person playing the music that makes it good, its the music they created by their God given talent that's good. Color has nothing to do with whether a person is talented, its what they do with that talent that matters.

One man's music is another man's noise. That has nothing to do with race.

So if your FM station is doing well, congratulations. I will never tune in, but that doesn't mean I don't support your right to broadcast that "music" if you choose. Just as I do not like Polkas, but if some radio station owner thinks he/she can make money playing Beer Barrel Polka on the radio, I also support their right to broadcast that too. I hope you'd also give those who choose to broadcast religious music and programming that same respect and support their right to broadcast such programming.

Sorry, MFD, but I don't support their "right" to broadcast music advocating or glorifying rape and murder. That station is nothing more than WURD with drums. WURD was once classical music; just another example of radio's deterioration.

In DOA's world, anyone who doesn't agree with him on anything is "racist."

Fred I agree, a station should not be allowed to broadcast music or programming that glorifies or advocates rape or murder, or hatred of a group of people, etc. I stand corrected. I was thinking more in terms of the so called "musical style" of Rap rather than the disgusting evil lyrics.

Blatant racisim aside, I'd say the main reason that Boom hasn't been mentioned is that there are simply way more people here listening to legacy or niche stations. This isnt necessrily a busness of broadcasting forum- it's primarily broadcast enthusiast oriented.

KYW is gradually becoming irrelevnt, WPHT has no perceptable bright outlook, Philly has no dance station; these are easy topics to get riled up over in that they're contantly rehashed. A brand-new format burts onto the radio scene taking a formerly third (or fourth) tier station up the ratings charts? That's a lot to comprehend. Not to mention the target demo is WAY younger than most everyone posting here. Personally, I'd hope their next step is staffing the station with DJs fitting that target demo who will most likely have no trouble managing the station's social media personas. One half of the station is clearly a hit (the music). Compliment that with engaging personalities and Boom could easily be nipping at the heels of Q or Power.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled race-baiting and generatioal divides already in progress...

It's also not exactly accurate to assume that rap music is all about violence and drugs. Gangsta rap went out of style 20 years ago.
