ratings discussion....

Maybe this varies by market, I am not sure because I am not in the radio business myself, but am a fan of radio and all the shennanigans that happen there.

How long is a station generally given to make a move up in the ratings book before they dump a format? Is this different in a market like Chicago than you would find in a smaller market like Quad-Cities, Rockford, Peoria, etc?

What sparked this was the note about Love 100.3 and their supposed failure. How do you know it is a failure? Ok, other than the obvious, it is on 100.3 and they change their name or format variety every six months to a year. And how do you go about figuring out what makes this format different from the next when this format is named one thing but marketed and presented in a different way? It would be like marketing B96 as a dance station. Or packaging The Mix as a true top 40/pop station when it is a Hot AC.

The problem isnt the ratings, its the format...you can't have 2 AC's stations in the same market....Hot AC (the MIX) and Rhythmic AC (LOVE-fm) is bascially the same format.....It really makes no sense to have both...

A better option would be to have a Urban AC... Bottom line is bonneville is clueless about doing urban radio and scared to try.....

The bottom line is, you want an Urban AC station no matter what the ratings and will attempt to throw anyone under the bus to get it.

According to Feder's column yesterday or the other day or whenever it was, Love has had (other than this past book) 7 straight up books. How on earth is that a failure?

I get sooooo tired of people here claiming that THEIR favorite format is the ONLY one that will work in (Chicago/Phoenix/insert market here) and calling other stations/formats/ownership names like scared/fool/clueless. Folks, the fact that YOU like a certain group of songs does NOT mean it is a format that guarantees success.

You want an Urban AC programmed just the way you want it? Get an ipod or a Part 15 station, and quit claiming to know everything about the Chicago market.

By the way, for this entire post, you can substitute "dance" for "Urban AC" and the post remains the same.

Thanks for your time.

Actually No- The bottom line isnt I want a "Urban" or "Dance Station" I want a good station programmed right..It could be country, blues or whatever........

I NEVER said LOVE-fm "was or is" failing it was a good start but if you dont know the market you are wasting your time...and that goes for anyone..

I dont need a I pod to program ....I do syndicated programming in 30 markets in 3 formats and all of them are in the top 16 for the last 3 years....

I know the Chicago market, because I LIVE here and program here....and quit claiming you know more about me the you actually do.......

Thanks for your worthless post.......

It really does not matter in Chicago. The radio there sucks. Most stations are bringing back hack dj's from the 60's to try and gear new listeners.

The music is 2nd place. There are NO good morning shows and all the stations play the same music!

NO good morning shows?

OK...I realize it's largely a matter of taste and that, also, good radio pros can make reasoned evaluations. I've never really listened to GCI's or WOJO's morning shows -- not my format preferences. I think Don and Roma sound sooooooooooo old and think WLS could go up 2 full points if they hired Mancow for mornings. That said, I think WGN/O'Dell is a good morning show. WTMX Erik and Cathy seem really well-targeted and programmed. And maybe just 'cause I'm a 44-year-old guy and right in his wheel house, Brandmeier sounds pretty darned good to me. He seems re-dedicated.

How do you critique those shows? And what makes good morning radio these days?

I'm proud. So why aren't you formatting the Chicago stations, if you're that good? Then you could have others taking potshots at YOUR programming choices!

I know the Chicago market, because I LIVE here and program here....and quit claiming you know more about me the you actually do.......

While I do not live there currently, I am in town at times, and in contact with family and friends daily. And lived there for 43 years. Don't assume you know any more about ME than I know about YOU.

Thanks for your worthless post.......

Which was, of course, the SECOND of its type in this thread....

Simple....Ask my syndicators that one.....Plus, I produce/remix music in addition to my shows....

Never said I did know anything about you...which begs me to answer why did you even place this response?? Hmmmm??

Which was, of course, the SECOND of its type in this thread....

Matter of opinion of course....But also begs me AGAIN to ask why did you even respond to it??

Keep in mind this is a message board and I have the right to voice my opinion(without personal attack, I may add)....What in my post said "rkchgo" RESPOND TO THIS??? which tells me there was some VALUE to it.....You could have EASILY ignored it and let other post surround it and go unnoticed....but NOOOOOO!!!!! you replied to it AND referenced previous post that I have done....

[EDIT]

Can you say "OWNED"?? Inquiring minds want to know......

But seriously, though its been fun..I will make allowances for a rebuttal......have at it....I'm done...

[EDIT-inflammatory]

What you have is an opinion. As do I. You voiced yours, I voiced mine, you jumped all over me for it, and someone else stood in and backed me. I don't see a big problem here, frankly. Go program your Ipod, and quit trying to crap all over a station that's doing just fine.

I jumped on you, because you jumped on me- more specifically singled me out, by QUOTING ME. If you left my words out of YOUR OPINION there would be no issue...

I never crapped on LOVE-fm. (I agree)They are not doing anything wrong. Ratings dropped because of Christmas, not because of what they are doing presently. From what I remember I never said they was doing any thing wrong. I gave an opinion on what could be done as an option, not a end all answer.......

As far as programming IPODs (this is the final crime).  You know what?  Tell enough people that, They will do it...and who will be listening to radio? This is bad advice to give anyone. You should accomodate listeners, not turn them away....

Thats just like saying "dont like what you hear?-turn off the radio!!!! Program an IPOD!!"    You want people to keep the radio on....not turn it off....

Just my 2 cents......
