Ratings due later today...

what do you make of his analysis of his ratings contributions to 'RKO? http://iamscotto.blogspot.com/2007/06/where-have-i-been.html

You're kidding, right? The guy probably hasn't even been back in the building since he was fired, and yet he suddenly claims to know what's going on there? Calling that "analysis" is like calling WWII a minor scuffle.

If 'EEI's ratings haven't suffered during Gerry Callahan's absence and with a parade of flotsam and jetsam (Larry Johnson, Craig Mustard, Meterparel, etc.)filling in on the morning show, what does that do to D&C's contract negotiations? It seems to me that as long as there is a high degree of interest in the Red Sox, Patriots, and even the Celtics, the ratings will be fine. Therefore, the "talent" has very little to do with the ratings. So why wouldn't WEEI just let D&C walk if they demand too much? Where else would they go? The other sports stations in Boston have lousy signals and nobody ever heard of them outside of New England.

Does this make any sense, or am I missing something?

I agree. D&C's days of 'It's-all-about-us' are over. Callahan was just banking on ratings going down so his swelled head could grow as large as Dennis' waistline. Now, both of them are utterly dispensable and hold no more value than the flotsam and jetsam that clogs WEEIs airwaves. Message to all the behind-the-microphone hacks at WEEI: THE SUCCESS OF THE STATION HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU!!! The TOPICS are of interest; NOT the hacks yacking about them.

Umm...I see that Maloney is already spinning

Oh Man...Maloney? Please don't give this baffoon any more free publicity.

Hard to understand what that would accomplish. WRKO ends up with sports, and WEEI ends up with all the problems WRKO currently has (the only three viable formats in major market AMs are news, talk, and sports.) They're both making boatloads of cash right now...

Huh? WRKO and "boatloads of cash" don't belong in the same sentence.

I don't know if RKO even breaks even....

wtkk must be feeling very foolish to be spending all the loot on howie.
a guy who hasn't updated his lameas* act in 15 years

It's kinda like the old "Tonight" show. Once you find the formula that works...you stick to the formula.

His "lameas* act" has been making him a fortune....and a sucess.

While he may not be your cup of tea...don't downplay his success.

do WRKO's numbers traditionally decline in the fall and winter when the sunrises are later and the sunsets are earlier? I know their signal is horrible during those times of the day in those times of year, which coincide with the most important day parts from a ratings perspective.

WRKO has probably the second best signal on the AM dial in Boston...so it isn't "horrible"....

Jerry Williams never had any ratings trouble in spite of whatever signal they have after sunset.

Nor did Brudnoy at night.

Ahem, this is about the silliest thing ever posted here, and that's really saying something. New records set every week, and sometimes every day. And by you, of all people.

WEEI was a sports station long before they became a ratings powerhouse. It took a lot of tweaking to get them to where they are today.

I'm sure the other sports stations in the market who 'scratch' in the ratings will read your post and wonder what they are doing wrong, since they cover exactly the same topics and nobody wants to listen to them.

WRKO is up in billing (against a national downturn, and not counting the Sox, who are accounted for separately,) and is outperforming Entercom as a whole. If they do 10 mil (up from 9mil last year) not counting the Sox, and with most of their 'back end' operating expenses (admin, rent, engineering, production, maintenence, senior management) shared with the rest of the cluster, it would be surprising if they weren't breaking even. Add in the Sox, and the money is coming in over the gunwales.

Of course, there has never been a station which made 'enough', nevermind too much, money, in the eyes of the ownership.

Programming philosophies/decisions aside, WRKO is not a healthy station...any way you look at it.

While I have not looked at their books...I don't think you can run a station competively in Boston for 9 Million/year.

WRKO is an example of that.

And going right back out.
