Now the Chicago JACK is almost doing as poorly as the NY version.

Without Howard Stern it wouldn't surprise me if WCKG falls below a 1 share by the time the Winter book is released.

CBS is falling flat on thier faces with their recent changes in all of the Top 3 markets. Now the question is how long will they let the stations languish on -until the ratings are 0.0?

The thing is CBS could have put Jack on WCKG instead of WJMK. Maybe JMK's billing was lower than it was 5 years ago, but instead of blowing up a popular format, they could have put Jack on a dog station where even Jack's current rating would have been an improvement instead of continuing with the failing talk format. Without Stern, CKG is in real trouble. With corporate radio making decisions like this, I'm glad I have Sirius.

Jack in LA is the second biggest non-ethnic 25-54 station, and doing marvelously and far better than the previous format. They are trying to save KRTH, but it is trending downwards. KROQ just finished the year as the highest billing staiton in the market and maybe in the USA. They are doing great there... Chicago and NY are different issues, though.

Looks like Jack isn't about Jack!!! The format may sound good in theory, but in reality it is too all over the place and hard to market.
I am glad that Q101 got out of its slump, I was getting worried about them. If they have a few more good books, maybe it will be a sure thing for them.
B96, I am not going to comment on them too much. I honestly think they are trying to be something they are not. Hits and Hip-Hop slogan isn't going to last six months before the hip-hop portion is gone. Hip-Hop (believe or not) isn't going to live forever.
I do like WILV-FM (100.3, Love FM). Great alternative to V-103. Granted, they don't play any new adult urban hits, but I love their selection of old school R&B. V-103 is still a good station, but I have been noticing they have been slipping in their playlists lately. I have been hearing a lot of the same "dusties" quite a few times every week. That's not good, they need to rotate some different old school cuts. Maybe Elroy R.C. Smith's sole focus shouldn't only be GCI, show V-103 some love as well.

Sounds like the Harvey Wells theory of radio is working well for CBS too. "We're reinventing radio". It's amazing how blown out of proportion people's reputations can get when they're surrounded by 'yes' men and others who know as little as their masters.

I think Jack is a joke. While it's doing well in small markets (with L.A. an exception), I just don't think there's much genius or applause necessary for a radio station that runs in a closet spewing out anything on it's hard drive. There's no science to it because anyone can do it, it's been done in many markets without a branding name, now - it has one. I stand by my assessments, as with NINE. There's no excuse for NINE's LACK OF SHOWING in MAXI/EXTRAPS, it's barter and exchange but if an owner doesn't care then he doesn't care. I don't blame to PD, I blame the clown above him, if the person above can't see their truck has driven into a wall then he should be demoted to toilet scrubber.

B96 is in trouble and it's no secret why. They can't superserve P1's they're postitioning themselves for because those P1's will never make a station that doesn't serve it's 'community' a choice above and beyond GCI. B96 is kind of like the old racists that used to say "I like their music but I don't want them living next to me". In order to win the black listener you have to talk the talk, walk the walk and be in the treches 'caring', 'serving' and being involved, not just "playing their music". Many of the 18-34 year olds have wide tastes, dance and electronica are part of them but B has pinned itself in a corner and there's no way out.

CKG as I stated last year should just shut down and sell or get serious. I thought it was bad under Mel but this is even worse.

Excuses are abound for many a stations but none of them are willing to look at the problems seriously. They're mostly missing out on why they're failing so miserably. For a few of us, it's easy to figure out but then they're the ones with all the answers [that are all wrong]. Maybe it's time to reinvent radio again and throw out the people who's egos are far bigger than their numbers and get people who can bring in WINNERS again.

Bad work, terrible execution and destruction of property used to be grounds for dismissal but now? It's covered by others who are just as blind as they are. Inefficient programming decisions are now covered by long term prospects of mediocre performance which seems to have been accepted as success. Disgusting.

Maybe Elroy R.C. Smith's sole focus
> shouldn't only be GCI, show V-103 some love as well.

Wrong, maybe Elroy should stay in the islands and play with his toys more often instead of meddling in (BLEEP) he doesn't understand.

Jack is a joke... If I wanted to listen to a hard drive, I'd plug in my iPod.. Music is better and there are no commercials.

You blast the ownership over at Nine, yet, you need to think about something... They're obviously making money on it. Besides... Fred is not the typical owner.

From day one I remember you saying JACK wouldn't work in Chicago, it looks like you were right.

I don't agree with your B96 analysis. I think that LA KALLE is 100% the reason why B is in decline. B96 had been successful for years with the formula you described. They didn't start going down until LA KALLE became part of the Chicago radio landscape. If KALLE didn't exist B96 would probably be at the exact level they were at for years.

>

Don't get me wrong, La Kalle is the number one reason PERIOD. What I meant is that for years they counted on the Hispanic listenership to support their mid threes and now they're gone and they're never coming back. Instead of going after the white females and males who enjoy, buy and listen to other forms of "dance" music other than hip hop, they've gone knee deep into it now. So, what they're programming to is a smaller base because there's only so many of them. GCI is not going to lose them, Power has it's base (granted it's not much) and B96 is not going to jar it loose, nor are they going to jar anything from Mix, Q or Love or Lite or Kiss, in fact, Kiss is isolated and can't do anything to B96 either. They've really never had competition because there was never a format that targeted Hispanics (modernly) the way La Kalle does, B96 lived by the sword and now they're bleeding by it. There's only one way to get back into the mid three's this ain't it. So, we're eye to eye, nice typing with you.

What's so obvious that they're making money? I'm going to say they're not. In fact I'm aware of a few local businesses that throw in a few celery stalks and oil changes for spots. You can only charge for no value in your station when you own the majority of the stations and Fred doesn't have the money to buy them all, nor should he. It's a dying, passing medium. If you read my earlier post I stated "If an owner doesn't care then he doesn't care and there's nothing you can do about that".

Maybe he likes it and it's personal IPOD. That's fine but let's not call what's going on over there good radio because there's more people listening to WCKG and that's not good :)

I don't know, I can't for the life of me understand why someone would listen to that and say "Oh yeah, this is gonna make a killing and people are going to love it!" The air staff reminds me of Moody Bible Inst. radio. They sound like some 3AM jock at a college station who has an elitist snob attitude towards music. The morning show is so out of place and it's a shame, Fisher's a good jock but not there. I heard Frankie Hollywood on last week and he sounded so out of place because he was actually injecting life into a lifeless, meaningless format, he made it tolerable, hell, he ridiculed some of the segs and believe me, many of the average people who don't listen to radio that much think it's nuts to go from CCR to Black Eyed Peas and it was great for him to point it out. Perhaps Harv knows better. Maybe they want a radio station this lowly rated and billing. They can hide their failure from most of the public but when you're privvy to what I'm privvy to it becomes a waste of time to discuss fantasy when you already know reality.

NINE could be a 2.5 share 10 million dollar biller, instead, it's a fly trap with on air personalities that belong on a radio station where personality is a curse and a dry, drab delivery is expected. Like public radio.

Hey musiclover, I've been saying that for years. But since he is the golden boy of Clear Channel, he isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Elroy would have to mess up big time in order to be booted out of Clear Channel. I will admit that over the years Elroy hasn't made great decisions in programming, its called not knowing your market. I think his only saving graces are the loyal listeners and the other people in the programming department (that are from Chicago) that actually makes it happen.

Musiclover, you and I are definitely on the same page on this one. Higher ups are only concerned about what THEY want, not what listeners want. That's the whole problem with the radio industry.
They are so concerned with making money that the creativity is out the window. What a lot of these genisus don't understand is that in order for a product or service to make money, it HAS to be quality!!!! Granted, you may own a good share of stations in your respective markets, but that doesn't mean you can put out crap and people will take to it.
Until the big boys realize that, they are going to be more and more in the dark.
Also, in terms of B96, there was a time when they were involved more in the various communities that they were trying to get as listeners. I know that I am dating myself, but I remember when the b-96 dance party was on in 1991 and the DJ's would mix live from various clubs. It wasn't just clubs in the burbs, they were on the North side, South side and West side. They would even do remotes from all locations as well.
Now it seems like you don't see that with them overall.
I really think they need to start adding dance music to its playlist again. I don't care if the music is five or six years old, I think it would attract more of an audience than it is now.

I don't TOTALLY agree with that observation. You can't blame one station for the demise of another, there are other factors. I think B96 got lazy and felt they didn't need to try anymore. It is called, not listening to your listener.

You can also say the one brief quarter a couple of years ago when they topped GCI to be the #1 station in Chicago got to their heads too. They have been in a downfall ever since never to recover to that.

Does anyone remember what they did to be #1? It was amazing when it happened.

At least their numbers are steady. Jack didn't seem to take a bite at all.

As for the staff, they sound fine IMO. Morning show is music heavy and upbeat. Rest of the airstaff have a WXRT/Drive/Professional downtempo approach which fits with a lot of the music they play.

The localized stopsets are going well. I never heard localized stopsets run so smooth. They have local and national advertisers now. Before they had no national.

They've come a long way since June 2004.
______________

don't let musicloverII fool you. He/she totally hates the Variety Hits approach (see, the station he/she used to work at flipped to Jack, so it's the Sour Grapes Express EACH AND EVERY TIME Jack or V.H. is talked about).

Pretty soon, he/she will accuse you of humping somebody's leg at CBS.

Nah, he's normal, in fact, I enjoy his rebuts and he gives you cause to think. You on the other hand are the third man on the the Jack on Jack train. When I see your posts I'm often reminded of those great words uttered by a one George Kennedy (no relation to the drunk or his family). "Please disperse, there's nothing to see here".

What's really sad is that our moderator is correct. Nine sounds much better than it did before (which is like saying someone looks better at 600 pounds as opposed to 630). However, we are two years into it and it's still underperforming just as bad as your boyfriend is here in Chicago and NYC and in L.A., hang on to your boy, he's about to take the elevator down.

You're also waaaaayyy off (which is nothing new, you're a corporate lackey). I never worked at/for a CBS station, a Jack, a flipped Jack, Bob, Bo, Phil, Carl, Jeff, Jill whatever. I was in real radio where a P.D. and M.D. were required to maintain ratings as well as billing. You're a rah-rah boy for a radio format (I can't think of anything more useless) who drewls over sub-par performances and hypes them on message boards. I'm a format neutral guy [my little attached by the weenie friend] so I don't care about WHICH format get puts into play. I always felt it more important to put the CORRECT format in play so that it lights up the competition not slumbers into a coma like NINE, JACK, WCKG and others in this dismal radio market. In your world, that means nothing and that's why you're still in an industry where the ground seems incredibly fertile for the underachiever.

I stand by my assessments. Jack has been done before without a name, now it has a branding name. It may survive in smaller markets but then many small markets have hodgepodge formats with no branding name. It may prolong the life of a station for a few years but it's only prolonging radio's agonizing demise due to it's inability to grapple with it's biggest plague, those running it first and foremost and in close second, TECHNOLOGY.

I'm sure you'll be the middle man on some other over-testosteroned, run into the ground company bludgeoning the merits of some stupid ridiculous format down the line. Consistancy is good if you don't mind the absence of progress.
