I can

Steelers in the Super Bowl? Of course the station could beat out K-Rock without Stern. Even WBGG did their best rating ever with the Steelers in the Super Bowl.

I honestly don't think it's time for K-Rock to fold its tent as I believe a rock alternative to WDVE and The X is needed.

Here are some things I noticed.

KDKA is officially the No. 2 station in town. WDVE is now, after years and years, the top dog in town.

The problem is it is more likely because of the demise of KDKA and WDVE staying the course than anything else.

WPTT is dead. Toast. Lib talk ain't workin'.

As cold as it is to say, one wonders if WEAE getting its best book ever with Mark Madden on the sidelines for much of the period says that his effect is not as great as previously thought.

What happened to WDSY? They were No. 1 for a ratings period last summer and now are four points back of first?

It's hard to say about WEAE. Mark Madden was gone about 2 and a half weeks. So you could be right about that. I think a lot of people are tired of his rudeness to callers. He is constantly calling someone a jack a** or idiot.

K-Rock's rating is lower than WBZZ's lowest during
its dark, final days. WRKZ won't make it to 2007.

OK, so the steelers had a really big impact on the ratings this time. It will be interesting to see if DVE keeps the ratings up after the a few weeks pass, I'm sure some of this is just a novelty thing.

Looks like Star lost their listeners to Bob, but it is still too early to tell if this format will survive this market.

Where did all the WDSY listeners go???

How did WPGB get more listeners? Did they get all the listeners that got tired of the same old boring deal listening to WPTT? WPTT could be a good niche format likeit is in other metro's, but how many times can you listen to the same thing over and over from mediocre shows?

The only thing I can say about WXDX and WRKZ is that maybe their listeners went to DVE due to the steelers, but will they come back to them in the real question.

Thoughts?
Edited by HamPGH on 03/03/06 01:14 AM.

Remember that the ratings have two components; number of listeners and time spent listening. Higher ratings might just mean that the current listeners stayed longer, and you can't tell that from just the 12+ numbers.
______________

Re: I can

Neither woould conservative talk, sports talk, pet talk, hot talk, celebrity gossip talk, or Tibetan poetry. Nothing is going to do very well on 1360 AM regardless of who owns it, how it is promoted, or what is programmed. The signal sucks. Regardless of what the content is, it just sounds terrible. It was never a great sounding signal, but the few times I've attempted to tune it in, I've given up. It's unlistenable. And with voices like Lynn Cullen's, they need all the technical fidelity they can get.

Try competition from four stations called "Froggy".

> Where did all the WDSY listeners go???

Ribbit. Ribbit. Ribbit.

> How did WPGB get more listeners?

Broadcasting good programming with some excellent promotion to let listeners know it was there. That's a combination that's hard to beat.

Even when the Steelers aren't on the air, WDVE simply has better programming than the other two stations. And you know that Clear Channel would never, ever allow WXDX to take listeners away from WDVE, so anything that WXDX might do that would pull listeners from 'DVE ain't gonna happen. As for WRKZ, when I hit the scan button on my radio and it lands on 93.7, they always seem to be playing something that really sucks.

DVE better programming lol.... the comedy cuts are stupid and only drunk people listening to that station and some classic rock fans that was like 969 and thats why it's so high.

But that doesn't explain-

Look, WPTT's signal sucks- that's a given.

But the same sucky signal got 1.5s with Jerry Bower.

Now it's 0.7.

There is no morning show, at least two of their shows are also carried by 104.7 at the same time- their big guns are so past their prime it is scary- I cannot begin to explain how bad that station is.

Quite simply I think they got rid of anything I would ever listen to (Michael Reagan, NASCAR, Neal Boortz, Bower) a long time ago.

ok,.....so your saying JackFM.just drop the 40's and 50's and 95% of the 60's

I think if that happened Bob would go over to Infinity and open a can of whoop ass on them.... oh thats right Bob already did that...with the ratings

now K-Rot knows how it feels to lose it's morning show, just like WRRK did with Jim Quinn, its not easy to recover from that and it takes years to rebuild from it

Re: I can

You're leaping to the wrong conclusion. We're talking about a station with a crappy signal during a ratings period that has limited daylight hours. Most days, most people lose 1360 after 5 p.m. The station is also stale. It isn't like Doug Hoerth is doing things that will add a lot of new listeners. He's just holding the dwindling number of people who have followed him through all his stops. He's trying to keep the ones who can get an audible signal out of 1360 in the winter, anyway.

What's "lib talk" about Hoerth's show? How many stations do ANY business without a morning show or any consequence?

I would assume they're just hanging on until they make their big frequency change. Then, given half a chance to compete, they can see where they are.

> WPTT is dead. Toast. Lib talk ain't workin'.

Re: I can

The signal has always been there. Hoerth in drive time with no morning show has not.

You could say what is "Lib Talk" about Laura Ingram in the morning- but the heavy hitters on that station are Cullen, the Air America host in mid-day, and Alan Colmes.

Plus, Hoerth is hardly thinking man's political talk. He's pop culture- Hollywood- and you could make the arguement that would cater to a political liberal.

He does cater to "Old School" and that is Democratic Pittsburgh.

So how's that?

Personally, when that station goes to 910 I would get rid of EVERYTHING! I truly think that station is the biggest disaster on Pittsburgh radio today.

Pretty silly and irrelevant, actually.
