How do you find out a radio stations target demo?
It's an inexact science at best, but there is a rule of thumb for music stations that seem to hold true.
Generally speaking, people listen to the same type of music they listened to during their formative (teen/20's) years.
I.E KAAM w/ 40's big band, singers from the 50's, easy listening from the 60's is appealing to the 80-70-60 year olds ...
KLUV plays a lot of music from the early to mid 60's to mid 70's- using that rule of thumb, a lot of their audience is going to be in their 50's.
KHKS has HUGE 12-18 and 18-24 numbers. But few senior citizens listening. Because, again, generally speaking those darn 'kids' these days are listening to the Jay-Z, Eminem, BEP's, Justin Timberlakes, while their grandparents aren't...
Then look at a station like Mix 102.9. "The best mix of the 80's, 90's and today. That's another way of saying 'drawing women from their late teens, 20's and early 30's"...(And "women" because Mix 'rocks' a lot softer than a "rock" station like KDBN might, while drawing from some of the same musical eras)
As someone mentioned earlier stations generally are always looking at replenishing their mythical target. In other words, let's say that KVIL is targeting women aged 35-54. Then their music mix should be adding in songs from 17 years ago (18+17=35) and getting rid of songs older than 36 years old (36+18=54)...
If you want a rough approximation, listen for a couple of hours and write down what songs you hear. Then introduce yourself to my friend Mr Google and do a little math. Will you necessarily get the 'right' answer. No... But I bet you get pretty damn close...
