How do you find out a radio stations target demo?

A station target is an internal decision. But if you look at what demos (male, female, age, ethnicity) they get most numbers in, that pretty much defines the target. Often, targets will span two different age groups, starting half way through one and ending half way through another, like 29-39, so you kind of have to look at averages.

Sorry Talk -Talk..the weeds are out of control once more

Talk-Talk, the bell rang. You should take your seat, pull out your textbook, turn to page 1, take out your #2 pencil and crayons and try to stay in the lines. Maybe DE will get something valuable into that skull of yours.

my man, now I see it. you still think you are at the columbia school of broadcasting...fyi, they don't use #2 pencils anymore, it is all on line now a days, wait...sorry, on line means you do it on a computer, oh wait, sorry again, a computer is that boxey lookin thing with the keyboard, gosh, sorry again, a keyboard has a bunch of letters and numbers, kind of like that old IBM Selectron Typewriter you use...adguy is cutting edge! buy ads from him!

What were we talking about again?

It's an inexact science at best, but there is a rule of thumb for music stations that seem to hold true.

Generally speaking, people listen to the same type of music they listened to during their formative (teen/20's) years.
I.E KAAM w/ 40's big band, singers from the 50's, easy listening from the 60's is appealing to the 80-70-60 year olds ...
KLUV plays a lot of music from the early to mid 60's to mid 70's- using that rule of thumb, a lot of their audience is going to be in their 50's.
KHKS has HUGE 12-18 and 18-24 numbers. But few senior citizens listening. Because, again, generally speaking those darn 'kids' these days are listening to the Jay-Z, Eminem, BEP's, Justin Timberlakes, while their grandparents aren't...

Then look at a station like Mix 102.9. "The best mix of the 80's, 90's and today. That's another way of saying 'drawing women from their late teens, 20's and early 30's"...(And "women" because Mix 'rocks' a lot softer than a "rock" station like KDBN might, while drawing from some of the same musical eras)

As someone mentioned earlier stations generally are always looking at replenishing their mythical target. In other words, let's say that KVIL is targeting women aged 35-54. Then their music mix should be adding in songs from 17 years ago (18+17=35) and getting rid of songs older than 36 years old (36+18=54)...

If you want a rough approximation, listen for a couple of hours and write down what songs you hear. Then introduce yourself to my friend Mr Google and do a little math. Will you necessarily get the 'right' answer. No... But I bet you get pretty damn close...

No mal-intentions toward anyone, just having fun and trying to contribute from a lot of media experience.

You really are stuck in the 70s. One episode of the "munchies" and you typed that without an error, huh? Man, that's talent. ;)
