Ratings

This board is notorious for ratings predictions with a trend just days away. What? Has everyone lost interest?
I get some of my best laughs with these posts. We can all use a laugh in our business these days. It is three months into the year and no
one has predicted a station will flip formats by this Spring. Very unusual for this board. Maybe the "outing" of posters is scaring people off!

First, about the "outing of posters," you have it wrong. It should read "out of a poster," and in that specific person's case, the plurality of his work on this board. Ain't that right ______? ;)

As for the ratings, Sandusky will probably be paying the most attention to the trend. Warm will want to see if their Christmas music cume is sticking around. See if the Movin' erosion has leveled off and to see (though maybe a little too early to tell) how KWJZ is doing with its newer music and positioning.

Just glancing over the latest trend and here is what I notice.

  • KMPS seems to have pulled away from the Wolf, but the Wolf is still pulling some good numbers. This just goes to show that 2 country stations in Seattle can easily survive.

  • KUBE is dominating over both Movin' and Kiss, however all are pulling respectable numbers, which goes to show the popularity of Rhythmic formats

  • Seems that both KISW and KZOK are the main winners for the male rock audience. I continue to remain impressed at the success of KISW over these last few books. For all the jabs directed at the management of Entercom, its clear the people running the KISW ship know what the hell they're doing. Stations such as KJR-FM, JACK, and KNDD just don't make that much of an impact anymore. Out of those 3, it seems with some minor changes, KJR-FM could still be a viable player in this market.

Am I leaving out anything?

Strong February trend for KIRO, KISW and KCMS in prime demo. Ron and Don and BJ Shea did very well. Sandusky got mixed results. The KRWM Dec/Jan Christmas buble burst and in February they were half of their number in December. The Christmas audience appears to have gone to KMPS, which had their best month in a long time and KPLZ which bounced back from two terrible months. KMPS and KPLZ mornings really jumped far ahead of KRWM. KWJZ slipped overall, however over the last four or five trends KQMV has settled into a solid third or fourth place position 18-34 soundly ahead of KBKS, but still well behind KUBE, KISW and KMPS. Your big winners in the prime demo for the month of Feb were KISW, KMPS, KCMS and KJR-FM. Continued tough books for KBKS, KBSG and KNDD. Adam Corolla has literally tripled the numbers of any of the music day parts in Jan and Feb.

The one good thing about owning multiple stations is everyone can be happy about something each month. Sandusky cant be pleased with KRWM's drop last trend, but KQMV is looking better. Bonneville can't be happy with KBSG or KTTH, but KIRO looks great. Infinity can't be pleased with KBKS, but KMPS looks strong. Entercom may not like what is going on at KNDD, but KISW is huge. Fisher can't be thrilled with KVI, but KPLZ had a nice month. Clear Channel's KUBE had an off month, but KJR-FM had an abnormally high month. It all averages out month to month, which is why good media buyers look at a four-book. (You knew I had to say it) Still interesting to see what goes on each month and what broadcasters think on these and other boards.

Morning winners overall for Feb in no particular order: KISW, KMPS, KJR-FM, KZOK, KPLZ, KIRO, KCMS All above a four share in prime demo for Feb.

Interesting to see some of the heritage shows doing well. So where are the posters who keep calling for Icahbod's, Bob Rivers and Kent & Allens heads on a platter? There could still some life in those old jocks. I know, it's just a trend but...

maybe for older demos they still have some life but not under 34. remember this lady say let the "numbers" speak for themselves" for MOVIN with a big ya ya! Now on the ever blessed four book MOVIN beats KBKS 25-54 and 18-34. In Feb MOVIN beat both KBKS and KUBE 25-54. I know its just a trend and I will get slammed again for posting but you can't argue with the numbers right?
Maybe mamma does know best afterall. Props to the ya ya sisters.

I'll grant that KQMV is ahead of KBKS in both 18-34 and 25-54 both in this trend and over the last few months. However, KUBE and KISW are well ahead of KQMV 18-34 and 25-54. The month of February was the only time I can see that KQMV beat KUBE 25-54 and it was an abnormally low month for KUBE. MOVIN is also off from its launch numbers a year ago. Will be interesting to give the new morning show, afternoon show and PD a chance to see if they can drive numbers with talent. Beating a troubled KBKS is a good start, but beating KUBE over the long haul is an entirely different story. Maybe the all female morning show attracts women, I am not in the demo. Time will tell. First two trends were bleak, but it really needs a year to develop. Ron and Don had terrible trends for the first year and then kicked in and are now number one in afternoons. One has to wonder if other shows will be given that kind of time, on other stations and in other day parts.

I would also agree that it was a good February for the "old" morning shows.

Movin's format isn't designed to compete against KUBE, so don't look at this as a horse-race, please. Rather, KQMV's format is designed to nip at KUBE's heels in the upper female demo, 25-44. Imagine the female stuck at home with a toddler, or the working woman trying to be hip, yet threatened by songs like "Soldja Boy." Oh yeah. You might see these women at the Klahanie QFC or down at Factoria Mall/Lohman's looking for a deal. But I just don't see the audience as wise, hip and urban........and the programming fits the bill. So KUBE has nothing to worry about.
