Ratings

An interesting book. The country audience is down (except for WPHB which doubled its numbers.) Z is up. Forever's combined total figures (just Forever, not counting 2510) is down to 36.1 compared with 40.2 in the previous book or 37.6 in spring 07. Their worst showing in the three published rating periods currently available from R&R. But, of course there were big changes toward the end of the rating pd. and these won't be reflected until the fall numbers.

hahahaha... nothin' like flawed ratings from a flawed system in the morning... glad I take my flaws with a very strong cup of coffee... hold the sugar-coating... haha.

What's even sadder is that some people actually base their LIVES off of these pathetic numbers... WAKE UP, PEOPLE!!!

If you need higher than a so-called "9" or whatever to justify your existence in radio, then go cry in your
tea. But I'll tell ya what, when you meet some of your most loyal listeners and they tell you that they never
change the station or turn the dial even the slightest... somehow it makes that "9" turn into a big crock of you
know what that is just used by the monopolies and money-hungry insolents of the industry to somehow justify their worthlessness and fill the void that exists in their own self-worth.

I mean, don't get me wrong, everyone loves when they get good ratings... but it's those people and companies that live for it that make me laugh...

Have fun living the rest of your lives for that one moment of self-aggrandizing glory... because all YOU have are a bunch of faceless people that have nothing better to do than write in a diary and have you hang on to every last pointless word.

Soooo, on this Wednesday, I hope you all enjoy pontificating to one another, realizing that said 'Arbitron' rules your pathetic existence... now THAT'S what I call a Monopoly...

We all know that Arbitron is imperfect. I doubt that anyone's basing his or her life on the thing. People fill out diaries because they want to feel they're part of something. Many of them are too busy. But radio is a companion and intimate and the flawed and imperfect system allows them to participate, even if they're ordinarily too busy for such foolishness. What the numbers really show is that something close to 30% of the population isn't listening to anything, which means almost 40,000 people who aren't being reached might be.

Okay Okay... so I was a little harsh... but in general, it's a very aggravating system... and I'm glad we agree on it's flaws and imperfection.

And while we agree that the system has its flaws and imperfections, the bottom line is that advertisers still look at those numbers and decide whether or not they want to jump on board with your station or not. If someone scores a 9.6 while another station rates a 2.5, what station do you think a company will advertise with? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that you go with the station with more listeners according to the ratings. Flawed or not, those numbers have their advantages for those that do well and disadvatages for those who do otherwise.

Be that as it may, I agree that the ratings system in it's current state is flawed. It all depends on if people are willing to submit the diary to Arbitron or are too lazy to do so. Maybe a new system is in order. I think maybe a "phone-type-survey" ratings system would be a lot more acurate than the current diary system. Sure, some people would just as soon hang up as to take one, but I bet quite a few would take the time to talk to someone. Just a thought. Maybe I'm just a little crazy.

Also, is it me or did everyone's numbers slide downward just a bit? It also seems that the country stations took a hit. Any chance they can rebound...especially Joe FM? Maybe it's the time of year?

Opinions?

Remember that what we're seeing in R&R and on this thing is a two-book average. The old-fashioned 12-weeker still exists, but we'll probably never see it. Being averages, the ups and downs mean a little more, but you'd need both 12-week reports to really know.

For instance, the drops for all the Forever stations--all went down--in the published averages are likely much more pronounced in the Spring book itself, after having good Fall books. And after falling several shares last time out, the rebound for Z probably represents a big jump back up in the 12-week. Gotta be happy going from #4 to a #2 tie. It's doubtful they caught QWK in the one-book, though. Quick certainly has to be happy at #1.

If you add the numbers from 98.1 and 98.7 from this report, they add up to just about where 98.1 was all by itself before starting the simulcast. All they've done is take the Frog audience and split it in two. As good as 101 may sound, it's hard to imagine the newest version will do any more than create two 6-share radio stations. Unless they turn 98.1 off, or change formats, which ain't gonna happen. Joe is down to a 1 share, so they really don't figure into the ratings equation any longer, or at least for the time being.

B was up a share, which confirms their place in the upper half of the market. Magic (Majic?) was steady, which may not be so good at a time when they were probably looking to make a splash.

It is a very good indication of how dead the SC Market is when ratings come out an only generate 6 posts.
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...
