Non-Religious Spoken Word Formats Philly Sept
KYW -AM #1 (News)
WIP-FM #12 (Sports Talk)
WHYY-FM #13 (NPR/Talk/Info)
WPHT #18 (Talk)
WPEN-FM #9 (Sports Talk)
WWIQ #20 (Talk)
WIP-AM and WPEN-AM barely a blip on the ratings screen.
I can understand why WPEN-AM was sold to Family Radio, 8.5 million in the bank. They didn't seem to set the world on fire(ratings wise) being an ESPN station. Would they get the return of their dollars spent running a second live and local format on 950AM? Probably not. With WIP and their own 97.5 covering Philly Sports with local programming, my guess 950 would just be a drain on their corporate bank account, especially now in the Winter 610 will carry CBS Radio Sports Network. So sports radio is pretty well covered in Philly. So I can understand why they sold WPEN-AM to Family Radio. Who else, but a national religious or an ethnic broadcaster with pretty deep pockets is going to pay 8.5 million dollars for an AM signal? FM is where radio is today, AM is barely holding on, and ONLY because of spoken word programming, but as more and more of that moves to FM those spoken word AM stations are now having the same battle they had 35+ years ago when pop/rock music started moving to FM.
I've been listening to both WIP and WPEN, plus WWTX in Wilmington (Fox Sports Radio). Burned out on Political Talk. Frankly all three sports/talk stations have their good points and bad points. WPEN seems to do far more Eagles talk and football in general than WIP has, so I've found my self listening to them online at work the most. WIP-FM has been more focused on the Phillies, but now that the Phils are done for this year, they'll probably do more Eagles talk so I may end up listening to 94.1 more often than 97.5 as the fall proceeds, time will tell.
Dan Patrick and Jim Rome are on WWTX which I check out when not listening to 94.1 or 97.5. Sometimes Patrick and Rome have got interesting interviews and sports stories, so it is a good alternative when you get burned out on only hearing about Philly sports as they are doing national sportstalk with plenty of guest interviews. Interestingly, Jim Rome will be moving to the new CBS Radio Sports Network in January, so then I'll have to go to 610 to check his show out. Dan Patrick will be moving to the new NBC Radio Sport Network ( I've not heard of any Philly/Wilmington stations picking up on the option becoming an NBC radio sports affiliate ).
With CBS radio launching their new radio sports network in January 2013, it makes sense for 610 WIP to becoming the Philly clearance station carrying it 24/7. Their owners, CBS Radio will make money with 610 that way, just as many CC stations across the nation do with their clearance stations that carry Premiere programming (Rush, Dan Patrick and Jim Rome, etc). WIP-AM probably will pull in better ratings with the CBS programming than it's presently doing since what it airs now can be heard on 94.1 FM.
