You might be surprised, as long as its classic Mexican Ballads it wouldn't matter. It couldn't be 92.7 L Que Buena , by any means, but whenever I go back to Santiago, on the public city busses, the taxis, in the restaurants during christmas, I often hear classic ballads, almost always mexican, and people always know the words. Ana Gabriel, we hear her over and over and over, even at the ghetto pool halls, I can't tell you how many times Ive heard "Hechizo", or "Llegaaa Naaaavidad ("Navidad sin ti" by Marco Antonio Solis) Over and over, .. "Tu la misma de ayer", by Luis Miguel. I know atleast in the Dominican Republic everyone knows old Mexican music (NOT the new stuff or overly ranchero.), but Old romantic Mexican songs stil saturate the airwaves of santiago on multiple frequencies, and I mean decades old stuff.
