As we talk about the pending simulcast of KTAR on 92.3, it was 20 years ago this month that then-full-service KOY 550 shut down its easy-listening sister FM KQYT, and started semi-simulcasting KOY on 95.5 FM. The reason was that FM music radio was gaining momentum at that point, and KOY wanted to retain its listenership by moving to FM.
It didn't work, and a year later, Y95 debuted. The following year, KOY would cease to exist in its local form.
Only time will tell if KTAR-FM has a better chance of survival.
