Red Letter month in Phoenix radio

As we talk about the pending simulcast of KTAR on 92.3, it was 20 years ago this month that then-full-service KOY 550 shut down its easy-listening sister FM KQYT, and started semi-simulcasting KOY on 95.5 FM. The reason was that FM music radio was gaining momentum at that point, and KOY wanted to retain its listenership by moving to FM.

It didn't work, and a year later, Y95 debuted. The following year, KOY would cease to exist in its local form.

Only time will tell if KTAR-FM has a better chance of survival.

Gary Edens had a comatose format on AM and thought putting it on FM would revive it. Only took a year and Tim Hattrick paired with Bill Heywood to convince Gary KOY-FM wouldn't work. The Men In Secret Underwear are on a "News On FM" mission (pardon the pun, here) and somewhat have a clue ???. However Nurse Jeff and I will be majorly disappointed if KT'R-FM is nothing more than a simulcast of KT'R-AM. Why pay $70+m to do that? TMISU could have paid a whole lot less for a rimshot and used the rest to beef-up KMVP's nighttime signal ;).
