Red Sox on WEEI AND WRKO??

97.7 / 107.3 Stupid radio station tricks !

Oh, come now...it's not quite THAT stupid. At least WKAF helps fill in some areas where WAAF is pretty weak. Especially since WAAF has a directional null to the SE (more-or-less where Blue Hill is). WRKO & WEEI have far more similar coverage areas than WAAF/WKAF does. And I still wonder about the WAAF/WKAF simulcast. It makes some sense for the long term, but it's also a smart transitional format if Entercom has other long-term plans for 97.7FM.

What is more worrying is that on Opening Day it was VERY obvious that they were producing a "master feed" that is WEEI-branded and WRKO was taking the cutaways and inserting WRKO branding. And doing it badly...I heard the beginning & ends of a lot of WEEI liners during those transitions. :-\

I must've missed the memo, but having the Red Sox on WEEI and WRKO has to be the DUMBEST thing I have ever seen. What justification could there POSSIBLY be to do this? Both stations are 50Ks.

Stupid radio station tricks.

It is stupid.

And the idea of having the English broadcasts of the Red Sox spread across 2 stations is stupid. There should be one home for the Sox, not two.

Actually, it seems pretty clever, and great for business. The few weekday day games run on WEEI and keeps WRKO from cannibalizing their Big Show listeners while keeping WRKO's most important program, Howie Carr, in place. It also guarantees the last couple of hours of The Big Show terrific numbers and give a great lead-in to Adams.

The night games on WRKO preempt syndicated programming that generates very little revenue and doesn't help the overall numbers (running the Sox in place of Savage is probably as close as radio programming can get to a 'no-brainer'.) This let's Planet Mikey become a live blog for the game and gives viewers of NESN an opportunity for instant angst venting.

WEEI is probably going to try to turn the Wednesday night games into 'event' programming, and Red Sox Wednesday will become a cash register.

The games WRKO runs on the weekends replace syndicated shows which most folks don't even know exist, while leaving their more popular live, sellable, morning programming in place. WEEI runs their weekend morning and midday stuff, mostly Sox oriented, without listener loss and has throwaway network crap on the air when the game pulls the audience over to WRKO.

So Entercom cleans up all the Sox revenue without sacrificing any ratings generating sellable programming. From a commercial radio point of view, what's not to like?

Yikes, Fox Sports is on the WRKO web stream again. And WRKO isn't even carrying the Sox game today.

Howie: "We got a new show, we got a new problem--Entercom happens!"

Howie is on the stream now.

Perhaps WRKO threw FSN on the stream because they usually play an old Howie rerun during Rush. Ironically, Entercom is behaving about not streaming Rush live - though I know of at least 3 (out of market) stations that do.

There were a couple occasions when WRKO's stream did indeed run a Howie rerun (from day before) then just after 3 pm, Fox Sports was "accidentally" put on (and stayed on for quite awhile). But on Monday, as they knew
many would be tuned to the web stream due to Sox coverage starting at 3:30 pm (first game), they did
manage to put WRKO on the stream (top of hour news then Howie).

Like they say, never ascribe to malice that which can be explained by incompetence.
