Red, White, and Boom! + WNCI

Does anybody know when Red, White, and Boom's contract expires with WNCI?
Because I was thinking...
Want to start a CHR in Columbus?
Get the rights to Red, White, and Boom!

If there is a way to break the partnership with WNCI, can you imagine the possibilities? IMO, endless.
______________

WNCI has been doing RWB with NBC4 since the beginning I beleive.. (don't hold me to that, I just remeber as a kid that they both did it together and im 26 now) --used to be they would simocast NBC4's audio from 8pm - on With the Zoo co-hosting with NBC4 but in the past few years they didnt link up until SoundTrack time.

It's just like WEBN-FM in Cincinnati doing those fireworks that Cincinnati does in the fall...they have been doing it for years and years too. I don't have a problem with WNCI doing the music with Channel 4, WBNS-FM does the music for Dublin every year, and Ted-FM is doing the music for Westerville this year. Why change something when it's been working for 26 years drawing 500,000 plus people to downtown Columbus every year, and even getting the skyline changed (like lighting up LeVeque tower...it wasn't done till WCMH/WNCI lit it up with searchlights one year, and Cindy LeVeque liked it so much she had it permantly done).

I completely understand what you're saying but what if? Now hypothetically speaking, let's say you are a new CHR and you can buy, wine, and dine your way into the mix. Wouldn't that be one hell of a way to upstart your new station?
Now logically, I do understand chances are slim to none but what if? What if?
If it could be done, NCI could be done.

Why does the CHR station have to be the one that does RWB anyways? I dont think people down there go because of WNCI, heck there are probally people there that never tune into WNCI except for that soundtrack which is very generic and not format specific (they do country, rock, classical and even oldies in that sound track)

heck many years ago RadioU used to do Grove City's Sound Track, I doubt most people there where listeners to the station except for that 30 minutes the crackers where going off.
______________

Wow, so the first local Jack station wasn't Ted -- it was 'NCI!!!

Since Ted does the Westerville fireworks C.O.L., does 105.7 The Fox do Hilliard's (C.O.L), 104.9 Gahanna's, 93.3 Ashville's, 107.9 Delaware's (I think they would) and CD101 do Grove City's fireworks?

I would think they would want to do those things for the communities they are licensed to "serve."

Just a thought since all those stations broadcast from their City of Licenses (except, of course CC 105.7 The Fox which of course broadcasts from 1 Nationwide alongside WNCI with Hilliard as a City of License).

Red, White, & Boom was started by WNCI and WNCI alone.

NBC4 came along as over the years just took it over.

They both still have a hand in planning it now. (like Clear Channel moving the date a few years back because Brittany Spears had a concert in town, that ended up not taking place)

Why they keep it on Friday and not Saturday is beyond me. At this rate next year they will have it in June.

I think you're missing the big picture. Imagine the advertising? Imagine the airplanes flying aroung with your banner? Imagine all the people who get to hear about the new, alternate, and better choice for a CHR here in Columbus on the biggest day of the year(at least in this town)? This would be a goldmine for any station trying to make an impact here in C-bus.
______________

I personally head in the opposite direction of downtown for this "event". Too many drunk idiots with their own fireworks. Not to mention the traffic nightmare.

Well yeah, me too but there are still a half a million who don't and that's not including all the hype that leads up to it.
______________

And many don't have such a hatred for WNCI like you, and so many others on this board do. Because that IS what this post is about. Not 'Red White & Boom!'.

Ding, ding, ding!

I would think they are having it on Friday because they believe people are going out of town for the weekend and they want to give them the chance to do both, RWB and go out of town.

Well I think it can also be a case of "People don't know what they don't know." Some people on this message board have a hatred for WNCI because they know what alternatives can sound like because they research them or listen to feeds from other markets. The majority of people in Columbus aren't as zealous in their radio listening and are content listening to what is fed to them on a powerful signal. You never know if there would be any hatred or love for WNCI if they were ever offered a strong enough contender/alternative to WNCI.

I like to think a weaker signal might be able to compete with WNCI but I really don't think it will ever happen. WNCI *in my opinion* can simply strongarm the market because of their signal.

It's no secret, I can't stand WNCI and whether you want to believe it or not, a lot of people can't stand WNCI. I just happen to be more outspoken than most people. I'm sorry if you don't like what I have to say but my opinion counts and the truth hurts.
______________

Re: EXACTLY!

I know you're from out of town RMH. But here in Columbus that 175,000 watts is NO MORE powerful than any of the other class B's in town (92.3, 93.3, 94.7, 96.3, 97.1 and 99.7).

Someone could do it though. If Radio One could get one of those class B's and put their "Z" or "Beat" format (CHR/Rythmic) on it (see WGTZ Dayton) it would eat up a hugh piece of WNCI's hip-hop and teeny-bop listeners. Radio One's WGTZ usually takes out WDKF, CC's Kiss Dayton.

Re: EXACTLY!

I guess I am in the same crowd as Incognito. Moving to Columbus from the Cleveland market back in 1992, I was surprised at how underdeveloped FM radio was here. Even TV was sad, ABC and Fox in mono, no dedicated Fox affiliate, but that's another topic. I was amazed at how many FM frequencies were open for the taking too. 104.3, 107.5, 103.9 and more. Sure, many are rimshots, but 107.5 was available with excellent metro coverage from DOWNTOWN.

Back to WNCI. I think the reason I can't stand them is that they have always been "WNCI". That's their moniker and identity, and it's been that way through format changes. I understand heritage, but back in 94 when they went AC to compete with Sunny and removed all the "rap", the CHR "heritage" ended IMO. Instead of admitting they sucked and coming back with a new image as a top 40 again, they remained "WNCI". They never really went back to CHR until Clear Channel entered the picture. And then, still "WNCI". With that signal, you could put on 24/7 Mormon Tabernacle and still show up in the Arbitrons. And I bet it would still be called "WNCI".

Re: EXACTLY!

I am pretty sure R1's 107.5 has put NCI in their place a few times. They are a 3kw metro signal, so they are equal in the city
