Tom Durney resigned as General Manager today. If there has been an announcement about his successor, I haven't seen it. I suspect his brand new VP of Sales, Sharon Day may be the new GM.

How many quality programmers have gone through there under his "regime"?
Reign of terror would be a better description.
Foreced resignation or voluntary?

Just as a side note...
I spoke to Tom back in February for the PD position at WORD and he
didn't seem too concerned about the revolving door he created.
Anyone think he knew he was leaving?
And did they ever find a good PD?

I can't imagine he knew he was leaving. His boss, Stephen Godofsky came to town and then Tom was gone. He cleaned out his office within minutes of resigning.

I'm not surprised he was unconcerned about the revolving door. The amazing thing is that the company would let so much turnover happen for such a long period of time. I wonder what Godofsky is smoking. Maybe Entercom ought to take a look at him and the job HE is doing. It wasn't just program directors. We lost count of the sales managers that came and went. Nobody with a management title lasted.

Godofsky's whole region is like that and has been for years.

That's not entirely true.

No great loss. Durney has always been a ham-fisted charlatan masquerading as a know it all manager. Nice wife, kids, etc., but a closed minded MY WAY, I-don't-care-where-you-come-from-and-what-you-know, do-it-MY-WAY sort of guy.
Godofsky wasn't the problem.

You got that right, Scott! Remember when he was hired as the GM at what was then Southern Star-Columbia? He was one of the prime reasons why I got out of there! By the time he was let go, nobody in that cluster was shedding any tears over it.

Yeah, I remember him, Robyn. He was the poster child for the "I'm from the BIG city so I know everything and these South Carolina backwood BarBQ rednecks don't know squat" support group.

His type of GMs are all over now! They couldn't care less what other people in the business, "that could actually help them" know! I've been hearing about the terror over there now for several years! What about the poor Barnstable folks, thrown into that he--ll-hole! Maybe morale can now improve, if that is possible in the radio business--:)

Scott:
Good choice of words about Tom Durney. He was from up north, Indinapolis and had the arrogance of a pimp and the compassion of Hermann Goering.
Sort of like Dan Savadove of the old Root days. Florence, SC comes to mind.

"...the arrogance of a pimp and the compassion of Hermann Goering."

Dude, you have to be a Dennis Miller fan. That's hilarious. And quite factual concerning what I've heard of Durney.

It brings to mind feelings and descriptions of working for Clear Channel. "Working for them is like being in a WWII concentration camp. Every morning when the knock at the door is heard, you wonder if its for you this time"! Durney fits that perfectly. The ole Durney-meister! Perfect GM for Clear Channel--:)

Savadove's another "upper" level manager who still thinks all Southerners squat to piss.

He was in Indianapolis for a couple of years in the early 90's. When Emmis took over, he didn't make the trip and the staff broke into a chorus of "ding dong the witch is dead."

that's a great market....they will need a good leader to go against cc and cox....

Amazing

Tom seems to have made many a friend over the years
(please note the sarcasm). How exactly did he stay
with Entercom so long if he was such a *!@? to people?
Curious,
The Spindoctor

You never know how many friends you have till you're out. Durney is finding out how many false friends he had. What goes around comes around.

He managed to stay with Entercom so long because Godofsky is an empty suit. Durney didn't last long in Kansas City under Weezie Kramer.

Or, he probably lasted long because very few, if any employees bothered to relay their issues up the chain of command. The way most of these corporations work, all information that gets to corporate is filtered through the local GM's. If clusters are meeting their budgets and the ratings are acceptable, why would the higher-ups assume there's a problem? Certainly the GM isn't going to tell them that his employees can't stand him, and that's why there's so much turnover...

I've worked in more than one cluster where the GM was an empty suit - and that's being kind. But the people there busted their butts, revenue goals were hit, ratings were good, so the GM came off smelling like roses. I'm sure that's what was happening in Greenville.

> If clusters are meeting their budgets and the ratings are acceptable, why would the higher-ups assume there's a problem?

Uhhh... perhaps notice the incredible amount of turnover? Besides, budgets haven't been met in years in Greenville.

Anytime you go over the GM's head to complain, somebody's career is going to suffer and there is no guarantee that it won't be the complainer's.
