Whattaburger runs ads on the Big 12 basketball package, but they have no locations in Kansas, Missouri, or Iowa. I think they're a mostly Texas chain (as is the Bevo 12 conference)

Regional chains that advertise outside their areas

This probably isn't exactly the same, but on Charter in Jackson, TN some channels have ads for local businesses in the Knoxville and Tri-Cities area, which is at the opposite end of the state. I figure those channels are transmitted to Jackson from the Knoxville area, complete with the local ads, and if there aren't any Jackson ads to fill in, the Knoxville ads stay in place.

I've heard of several instances of people driving 2 hours+ to new Sonics in NJ and other parts of the NE. They had to have known about Sonic from somewhere, even though they don't have a location of their own.
The store I see advertised most that we don't have where I'm at is Kmart. No way to shop at Kmart here unless you do it online. I think the nearest one I've seen since we lost ours is over in Shreveport. I know I've seen others not located here but Kmart is the one I've seen the most.
I've seen ads for Boston Market on national TV, although the closest location to me for them now is in St. Louis. They used to be in Memphis and Nashville but they're gone now.

Is there any way that the cable nets (CNN, Fox, Spike, etc) can regionalize their spots (other than the breaks the cable providers fill). I've seen Hot and Now (not in my area)
The over the air nets can switch one station for one break if they so desire. In the 90s when TV was analog, I worked at a small CBS affiliate and somehow we lost our satellite controllers. We were in Indiana and the net had to unscramble one CBS satellite channel just for us. During that week we were airing Winn-Dixie and Publix spots, Best Foods instead of Hellman's, etc.
Sonic crept north into Dayton, Ohio about 5 years ago,
The over the air nets can switch one station for one break if they so desire. In the 90s when TV was analog, I worked at a small CBS affiliate and somehow we lost our satellite controllers. We were in Indiana and the net had to unscramble one CBS satellite channel just for us. During that week we were airing Winn-Dixie and Publix spots, Best Foods instead of Hellman's, etc.

Nashville has several restaurant chains that are available nowhere else in my area that I see ads for at times. They have Golden Corral, although they used to be in West TN, Jack in the Box, and White Castle. They had Steak and Shake for years before they came to Memphis or Jackson.
Although it happened so fast I didn't get to find out the actual name or place or even the channel, I ran into an ad for a local steakhouse in KY on a hunting show. It seems like this may be where some odd ads may come in as well, on regional sports networks. The Carl's Jr. ad I saw may have been on some kind of regional sports program.

I've seen ads For Longs Drugs in Hawaii and I was shocked because in 2006 CVS changed all the San Francisco Bay Area Longs Drugs stores to CVS. Incidentally Kona Big Island Hawaii CVS decided to keep all CVS stores in the area to Longs. I think this is like when Safeway calls the Los Angeles Stores "Vons" but keep the San Francisco stores as "Safeway".
