Regional chains that advertise outside their areas

I've seen ads for Manny Pacquiao doing commercials on TFC Philippines for Local Car Dealership in LA and Casinos in the Mojave area. And I've also seen ads of small Filipino owned businesses across America advertised on TFC Philippines. I know TFC Philippines has an office in Redwood City but I'm well aware they do these ads to target areas with High percentages of Pinoys.

Don't forget all of the Japanese and Korean companies that place ads on stadium billboards because of players of those nationalities on MLB teams. I couldn't tell you what any of them do (or understand what their language characters actually mean), but that's about as far out a region as you'll get for advertising.

Checker, Schucks and Kragen were all the same company, CSK Auto.

And if I remember my reading yesterday, CSK bought Murray's here, and that's how it got folded into the O'Reilly's empire.

They were running the O'Reilly's jingle, only with "Murray's and...O'Reilly's", with the former name replacing the extra "O's".

Same with Bumper to Bumper in Wisconsin, except with their annoying national "O...O...O...O'Reilly!", then "and Bumper to Bumper!" jingle rushed out in shame until the merger was complete. Now the last part is "O'Reilly!!!" screamed out like the singer just reached a 'peak' of some kind, if you know what I mean :D.

Sometimes regional and national chains will run spots before they have any locations in an area, to prepare the market. In oour market (Rochester, NY) we see spots for Golden Corral even though the nearest one is 200+ miles away in Albany. Sonic? It's on the air everywhere although the closest one is over 120 miles away in Binghamton, and CiCi's spots air egionally even though the closest one is 75 miles away in Syracuse.

Saw an ad last night on cable for T.G.I. Fridays. Not one location in Western Washington...yet. Golden Corral used to be on all he time (and still is, now they have a location in Marysville, WA)

Phoenix radio is frequented by ads (in local traffic reports!) for Office Depot and Advance Auto Parts - even though neither have stores here.

In Texas, Hi-Lo is another auto parts store chain that was bought out by O'Reilly. Their commercials also had "Hi-Lo" in place of the extra O's in the jingle. I think this was in the late 90s; by the early 2000s, the Hi-Lo name was ditched entirely.

I was working in the parts department at an auto dealership in Houston at the time, and we bought all of our aftermarket parts from O'Reilly. The guys I worked with still referred to it as Hi-Lo, even as late as 2005 when I left there.

During the last couple of years, Regions Bank advertised on nationwide cable channels such as History and TLC, during national commercial times, yet, as far as I know, only have branches in the southeast and Texas.

Wachovia Bank always put their ads on ESPN, CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC before their 2008-2009 merger with Wells Fargo. I know Wachovia never had branches in CA but Wells Fargo did.

Belk, a regional department store in the South, is running ads on ESPN

They have to in order to be the presenting sponsor of the Charlotte bowl game that used to be the Meineke Car Care Bowl; ESPN airs the game and requires all sponsors to buy a bunch of ad slots so that they won't get 'rebranded' during Sportscenter (such as when a NASCAR race sponsor finds their race 'presented by Cracker Barrel' instead and their sponsorship pruned out).

That's why FedEx dropped their sponsorship of the Orange Bowl; they would've been required to do a bulk buy of ads on ESPN to get full naming rights acknowledgement.

I'm in the NYC region and we've seen ads for plenty of national chains before they got here. In some cases, they haven't gotten here yet.

Walmart...There are no Walmarts in NYC. They're kept out due to their anti-union regulations and NYC's insistance that unions should be allowed to organize in Walmart. We were seeing Walmart ads well before the first Walmarts started to appear on Long Island. Then for several years, we'd see Walmart food ads even though there were no Walmart Supercenters in the region to sell food. Today there are four Supercenters in NJ and a few in the Hudson Valley.

Hardee's...The chain only made it into a four or five locations in NJ and about a dozen on Long Island when we were seeing Hardee's ads many years ago. I can remember Mama Cass of The Mamas and Papas singing "I hurried on down to Hardee's where the burgers are charcoal-broiled." All those Hardee's closed decades ago, well before the merger with Carl's Jr. I don't think I've seen any ads recently for Hardee's.

Sonic...We've been seeing ads for Sonic for years, mostly on TBS, TNT and some of the sports networks, even though the first Sonic only appeared in the area two years ago. I still don't think we have more than five or six, mostly in NJ. When the Sonic opened near me, they had to have a state trooper there because the place was so mobbed. The first few weeks, you'd often be waved away because the parking lot was full. Neighboring businesses put up signs saying "NO Sonic Parking." That had to stem from all those years of seeing Sonic ads with no store nearby.

Jack-in-The Box...I don't think I've seen any Jack-in-The-Box ads in the NYC region even though we had two or three of them in the Hudson Valley decades ago. They've all closed. I don't think there's a Jack within 500 miles of NYC now.

Long John Silver's...We had a few LJSs in the region but all have closed except for a few in the Hudson Valley, combined with KFC. There was even one on 7th Ave. near Madison Sq. Garden some years ago. You still see the stores with the nautical sea shack design, including wooden planks leading to the front door. But they now house non-nautical businesses who haven't bothered to remodel. One is a Chinese fusion restaurant in Hackensack NJ. Yet to this day we see LJS ads on TV, again mostly on TBS, TNT and a few other cable networks.

Taco Bell...We were seeing Taco Bell ads when only a few Taco Bells were located on Long Island, none in NYC, none in NJ, none in Westchester. I wish I had the foresight to get a Taco Bell franchise early because today, they're all over. I believe Northern New England was the last place to get Taco Bell but they're in NH, ME and VT now. I even saw a few in the Montreal area.

Golden Corral...I see their ads on cable networks even though the nearest one is in the suburbs north of Philadelphia.

Chick-Fil-A...Again, none in the NYC region except for one in the Paramus (NJ) Park Mall that's been there since the mall opened in the 70s. Today there are free-standing Chick-Fil-A stores in South Jersey and in the Allentown market, about 60 miles from NYC, but none in the NY city market except that one mall store in Paramus. Yet we see the ads on cable and watch the Chick-Fil-A football bowl.

Dairy Queen...We have a few Dairy Queens here and there in the NYC market but mostly ice cream-only stores with no enclosed seating, only open in the summer. Yet we see ads all year long for DQ on cable, hawking burgers and other non-ice cream foods. The nearest DQ full-menu stores are in the Allentown market.

Acme Markets...I beileve they are also a subsidiary of Ralph's. They seem to have the same logo and design as Ralph's. They have a few stores in North and Central Jersey. It seems they've closed many of their stores in the NYC market and do no advertising on local media, even though they're still strong in the Philadelphia area, South Jersey and Delaware.

I've seen Ranch 99 (Chinese Supermarket from San Gabriel Valley) ads on Filipino Newspapers in the San Francisco Area in 1996 before they came to Daly City/ Pacifica Border and Albany/Richmond Border in 2000-2001. I know that Ranch 99 Supermarkets tend to have a huge following in the San Gabriel Valley in LA county especially in Monterey Park, San Gabriel, Rosemead. Its like Seafood City and Island Pacific would have huge following in Filipino Districts like Vallejo. I bet there were supermarkets from Spanish speaking countries that had ads that aired on Univision and Telemundo before they hit the Hispanic districts in the USA.

Does ESPN make the companies that have naming rights to arenas and stadiums buy ad slots to avoid getting covered up or is that just for the 100 bowl games they have?

Since Steak and Shake opened next to the Ed Sullivan theater, are they now running ads in NYC? They don't have many locations in Kansas City but they still runs ads there

They can't do anything with that at all, it's just for the bowl games. In fact in a couple of cases a new stadium name was launched on a Monday Night Football telecast; in 2005 the Edward Jones Dome was renamed Russell Athletic Field for the evening as a favor to Russell by the Rams for branding their training complex, and the Metrodome's playing field was renamed Mall of America Field beginning with an MNF game in 2009.

Little Caesars is now running ads on national TV, they used to have a lot of locations in Kansas City but I think they all closed years ago

I very occasionally have seen Jack in the Box commercials, but they have no locations here in Ohio.

They are moving this way, though...they just opened up in Indianapolis.

I remember when I worked at small AM stations, the network news at the top of the hour would often run ads for stores like True Hardware that were outside of our station's coverage area, but I suppose that it was still beneficial overall for them to run ads like that at the national (network) level.

Lirrle Caesar's dropped out of West TN completely at one time, but they have come back in the last 5 years or so. But I can remember seeing ads for them before they came back into the area.
