So what is the Scully story. I'll trade you one Bernie story for the Scully Bernie story.
What is a Scully, while we're at it? 
First, a Scully is a brand of reel to reel tape recorder that was quite popular in th 1980s. It was more high tech than AMPEX and more durable than Otari.
The studios in Raleigh had several fairly new ones when Bernie sold the station to Metroplex. On the night before the change of ownership, I got a call from the overnight guy who said an engineer from Greensboro had come in and taken the newest machines out of the building - saying they were not included in the sale.
I called Gary Weiss in Tampa (he was to be the GM) in the middle of the night and the things were found sitting on the loading dock the next day.
I believe Denny Dailey was Bernies manager (of both markets) at the time. I am told Bernie called him and told him to fire me before they signed the papers. Fortunately, Denny made things right and I already had a deal with Metroplex.

I was the operator on duty that night when Bernie sent the engineers to raid the Raleigh plant. As I recall, the machines they removed were actually MCI reel decks. They were nice machines, as long as you kept the Molex connectors in the transports clean.
They left all the Scullys behind. Apparently they thought of them as junk. I was busy on the air and didn't notice they were taking out all the gear, until I walked into "Production C" to dub spots and saw the Scully sitting where the MCI used to be! I'm surprised they didn't go in the air studios when I was in the can to remove all the fancy ITC 99B cart decks.
They also took some expensive test gear, like a Delta impedance bridge among other items. As you said, all that stuff got dumped back on the loading dock in Raleigh after all the phone calls.
I recall that they removed an RCA backup transmitter from the 850 site. We never saw it again, so Bernie must have kept it.
