Remember when 93.5 KDAY was called 93.5 The Beat

@WDB 2003 You're right it is what it is. I miss the hip hop tracks though. :'( KHHT tried so hard to sound like KKBT & KPWR in 2001-2002.

If they wanted to try and sound like KKBT then they should have kept it on 92.3. Clear Channel should have sold those am stations they own nobody listens to KTLK AM or KLAC AM. I know it was business because the Mega format was doing good back then but still their lost. But at the end of the day no one wins and its a lost to Los Angeles. I still feel bad when Radio One sold the station in 2008 the staffers that been there for years got crappy severance packages.

Amen to that! Clear Channel should have thought twice about sabotaging it's most successful of urban-leaning rhythmic stations "The Beat" @ 92.3 frequency. KMEL has taking that helm by default because it's the Bay Area's only station that targets that demographic as well it's a major money maker. There is no doubt in my mind that if the Beat had remained at 92.3FM that it would have evolved with the times and still been able to find it's own niche with the hip-hop/R&B audience. If the management at Clear Channel used better judgement then they could have controlled by the Southland as well as the Bay Area with 2 legendary urban-leaning rhythmic crossover stations.

Yep and now they have a low rated rythnmic oldies station that doesnt know what to play. And in danger of flipping to a format that wont appeal to no one. And those 2 am stations that have no life. KFI and KIIS are the money makers in that compound.

Well its been on the air for nearly 10 years now and they still are promoting their big concerts for spring and summer. I doubt they will flip anytime soon since most of the time its VT. I was listening to my iheartradio app and Renne Taylor VT for V103 Chicago, WDAS Philly, WYLD New Orleans, KJSM Mephis, and Mix 92.3 Detroit mostly overnights. Same with Tony VT from KISQ in San Fransico and Lisa St. Regis VT from KHYL in Sacramento. Victor, Jimmy and Damon are the only live jocks on air. So its Cheap Channels way of running things. I guess the VT started around 2008 when the ecomony went bad.

Most of KHHT's jocks aren't live you're saying too me? L.A. radio has been sounding horrible since the recession hit in 2008.

I remember Hot 92.3 playing Dillema By Nelly & Kelly Rowland when first started. They played Love You Better by LL Cool J in 2002 as well as Doin It. They also played 50 cent's 21 Questions from 2003. They were Hip Hop & R&B heavy when Michelle Santusso was PD. Michelle Santusso was also PD at 92.3 The Beat from 1997-1998.

KIIS has toned down on hip hop its more mainstream with pop acts still rythnmic but no rock as much. KPWR main focus is on KAMP. Their more rythnmic than KIIS is now and alot of people are switching over to KAMP. I guess those dumb switch parties work.
Now KIIS is on life support

Yep I remeber it got alot of airplay during that time. Also Ghost Town Dj's My Boo got alot of airplay on the Beat, Power 106 and KGGI during the 90's. Mark Morris Return of the Mack and Toni Toni Toni Let's Get Down
I love Mark Morrison Return Of The Mack, Ghost Town DJ's My Boo and Tony Toni Toné Let's Get Down. I remember hearing Return Of Mack on The Beat in 97. Overplayed. Tony Toni Toné Toni The Beat overplayed it too. KJLH used to play Let's Get Down but without DJ Quiks rap though in 96-97. Cali Anthems all the way.

How are they on life support. Its the #1 Top 40 station in the United States plus the top billion. In 2008 they ranked in 66.3 million. Despite the recession still a top billing station. And the ratings are good. Not to mention the simulcast in Rosamond on 105.5 gives them more listeners.

You're right they've been playing pop for years.

I put KHYL & KQOD into my favorites into the 100 favorite stations list, with KHYL at #31 & KQOD at #66. But if one of one of my stations changes formats, either my list will go higher or lower.

I just added KHJZ 93.9 Jamz from Honolulu, Hawaii. This station sounds great. Not bad for a Rythnmic AC. KFBT 103.7 The Beat in Fresno sounds good too. I also added WDTW 106.7 The Beat in Detroit since they shifted back to Rythnmic AC.

@wdb2003 Remember The Theme (It's Party Time) from 1996-97. I just downloaded it on my iPhone still a hot song after 14 years. I hear on KDAY. The Beat overplayed it during that time so did Power 106. I even hear it Hot 97 in NYC on occasions.
