Remember when KKBT went Adult R&B

Well the Urban AC sound wasnt all that bad what f###### them over was picking up Tom Joyner. Michael Badisen was okay becasue when it was on KKBT it was live from 12-4 when KDAY aired it it was tape delayed. I had tape players that sound better than that. When they were Urban AC yes ratings took a all time low but still had a full power signal and the ratings were higher than KJLH and KDAY. Plus a more focused playlist. I remeber Shirley Hays when she took over as PD right when the station was sold dropped the playlist and played whatever they wanted. Sad that its not on their air anymore but its the business.

I was used to the Hip Hop & R&B format on KKBT. I have never heard any R&B oldies from Marvin on KKBT. I was used to hearing artist like Missy Elliot,Trina,Faith Evans,Lil Kim,Foxy Brown,Mya,etc on The Beat. That was a dumb move for real SMH.

I gave up on L.A. radio altogether when KKBT moved away from mainstream urban. It wasn't the same. KDAY went current. KJLH was playing that Justin timberlake record called sexy back. SMH. Power 106 went Top 40/CHR in the wake of KKBT's format change and to go against KIIS-FM. L.A. sucked 2006-2009, until KDAY bought back their Classic Hip Hop format.

Actually 2006 in LA radio was pretty good more choices to choose from
Movin939
KBIG 104
Indie 103.1
And the Wave was actually Smooth Jazz. Compared to now radio is boring

You also have to remeber KKBT was in a crowed arena. When KXOL hit the air and KIIS started playing more hip hop and r&b and KDAY launched it started to lose its listeners. Not to mention the so called celeberity morning show never worked out. John Sally Steve Harvey, Free, Wendy Williams big names did not bring in big ratings. Yes I miss the Beat too just went down hill when it moved to 100.3 its like that signal is cursed.

Here is the KKBT timeline:

1.1989 92.3 The Beat was born.

2.1991-2000 92.3 The Beat moves in to an Urban Comtemporary direction playing what made it famous Hip Hop & R&B competing with Power 106.

3. 2000 The Beat moves to 100.3 still carrying the same format.

4. 2004-2006 The Beat's ratings hit an all time low due to KDAY's come back in 2004 and Steve Harvey's departure from the station in May 2005. Then a KKBT becomes a KJLH clone if you hear what I'm saying. In Jan 2007 The Beat becomes V-100.

Yep and in 2006 they were in a crowded field. Too many Hip Hop stations 1 had to go. Other companies beat the beat at their own game. Sucks becasued I missed the Beat but life goes on. Maybe it will come back later on KDAY did so maybe the Beat.

I heard on khht 92.3 temptations my girl I feel like Im hearing oldies on 92.3 not rb and old school I feel like I'm hearing my father favorite music on it what happen to that station I feel like I'm listening to writ 95.7 in milwaukee and thats oldies is not rb and old school I never heard it 98.3 in milwaukee they never play it I rather listen to 93.5 wday there better

Yes they need to change the slogan to LA's Old School becasue the R&B is gone. Only top 40 R&B crossovers are on the station. But one thing I dont get about them is they are afriad to play more 90's music. There is more to the 90's R&B than Waterfalls and I Get So Weak.

Most of those stations weren't hip-hop stations, they were just 2 Rhythmic CHRs, "Jack FM" format and a Latin Rhythmic CHR. The real reason why KKBT went down was the craziness that was going on with Radio One management during the period of 2005-2007. Radio One was losing a lot of money left and right and was selling stations in a number of markets including LA since KKBT was the sole property in the market. That is real reason why "The Beat" went down and wind up as an UAC then sold.

If it was another, more dedicated owner of "The Beat" KKBT @ 100.3, then it would have adapted to the highly competitive environment and persevered as a rhythmic-leaning urban contemporary or an urban-leaning rhythmic station.

KKBT was a good station until the Adult R&B format came to the station. Now we don't have a mainstream urban radio station. KJLH doesn't cut as a mainstream urban. Power 106 is still hip hop & R&B but claims that their format is Top 40/Rhythmic. KDAY needs stick to old school hip hop. I'm displaced KKBT listener, if anyone is a KKBT floater holler at me.

Based on today's demographics of the market, it appears that there can't be a successful urban format in Los Angeles that doesn't primarily rely on Hispanic appeal.

BJordan, you should move to Memphis. We have mainstream urban K-97 plus hip hop Hot 107 as well as two Urban ACs on FM. One of which primarily plays 70s and 80s. If you want real old school, there is WDIA on the AM dial. Not to mention several urban gospel stations and a non commercial urban AC that plays a lot of smooth jazz.

ATL is now considered the top choice to Urban music next to that would be Detroit and Dallas. Dallas is kinda like LA. It took me a while to realize the demo's in LA have changed.

No offense but whole my life is in L.A. I would never move from to any state because the radio is no better out of state. If The Beat was still here it would sound a mess. Mainstream Hip Hop is not at it's peak like it was in the 90's and Early 2000's. imagine. It would be playing songs such as please excuse my hands by Plies, 143 by Bobby Brackins and during the night beat instead of real R&B will hear Trey Songz, The-Dream,T-Pain.SMH. I hope not.

The only successful formats on 100.3 was Mega for a while and then The Beat. The signal is not that bad. You can hear it in some part of San Dieago too.

No our radio is pretty bad now. Detroit, ATL, and New York have a more varaitey to chose from. Radio here really went downhill in 2007-2008

KDAY flipped
Indie flipped
Movin dropped currents to focus on 70's 80's crap
V100 flipped

KDAY is actually urban just focuses on Hip Hop and R&B gold. It just sucks because its on a low power signal. Same with KJLH but I hear you there is no mainstream urban in Los Angeles

KDAY has came a long way. It's the new 92.3 The Beat & Power 106 from back in the day. I love the 90's and early 2000's Hip Hop & R&B. Whenever I listen to KDAY I sit back and think about the good ol' days.
