Request-a-thon on 102

Holy crap, have you been listening to the Request-a-thon on Star? I can't believe what they're playing. I heard Surfin Bird and Frank Sinatra on the way home today. This close to the spring arb it seems a little foolish to be turning that many listeners away with a crazy format swing like this.

It's very much like what 97 Rock does very successfully each year (just before a major book) for Make-A-Wish, playing everything from Elvis (Presley) to Elvis (Costello.) Star 102.5 is doing this for the Alzheimer's Association, a very worthy cause. It helps to have high profile air personalities that are part of the community (Norton, JP & Carl; Rob and Roger) and have been so for years. Stations that voice track with out of town talent, one trick ponies or run in "mypod mode" can't pull this off.

Clear Channel did the request-a-thon on The River 105.9 in Hartford back in over a weekend in February. They did it 6AM-7PM on Friday, 8AM-6PM on Saturday, and 8AM-4PM on Sunday. I didn't hear how much money they actually raised for The Connecticut Children's Medical Center, but I can tell you I am not normally a listener of The River and I found myself tuned in just to hear what they were gonna play next. - So yeah I think STAR got a boost in listenership during their request-a-thon. In Hartford it was $25 minimum donation to hear a song. Operators standing by in the main Clear Channel office. And when they said they'll play anything - they meant it. Disco, Classic Country, Country, Adult Standards, Hip-Hop, Oldies, and of course stuff that would normally get played on The River anyway. "Walmart" Jeff one of the characters on the morning show on sister CHR station down the hall KISS 95.7 came down and requested a hip-hop song and he mispronounced the artist's name. Meanwhile The River Jock pronounced it correctly!!!!

It's the weekend. No big deal.

Yeah, after all, that's only 28% of your broadcast week. Might as well turn the station off.

You misunderstand. The audience uses radio differently on the weekend. Typically, TSL is higher, so you have more room to move in format. That's when programmers run their specialty shows. So breaking format, playing deeper cuts, rare tracks, is more typical on the weekend.

So you wish for this to be done on a Wednesday instead then?

Cough, cough. You now assume in 2010 it is everyone's weekend. Where is the reality check on the the world of work? No wonder this business tanked. There is NO SUCH THING anymore!!. Programming must be directed 24/7 365...cause you never know when your core is hitting the production lines (or whatever they do).

That's all....cause I saw this coming a long time ago.....

Then again, perhaps one reason TSL is higher on the weekend is because programmers run their specialty shows, break format, play deeper cuts, rare tracks, etc.

No...you need to think about the audience. They aren't rushing to work or school. They have more time to dedicate to something. They can actually have the radio on at home. It also depends on the station. TSL is higher on workdays for radio stations that get played in the workplace. That's usually soft AC stations.

The majority of people work 5 days a week, Monday thru Friday. That's why you still have rush hour.
