"Retro" CHR

nd2023

Banned
I just thought of a "new" variant of the CHR format: Retro CHR

It would sound like how a CHR station sounded in 2000, and play the hit music from about 1998-2002. Unlike a Hot AC, it would play heavier songs. I realized it when I played N*Sync's Tearin' Up My Heart on 107.9 FM, and it got a good reaction from some listeners. It is nice to hear songs that you haven't heard in years. It would be like an oldies station for teenagers.
______________

Kiss XM

XM21

is very similar.

Let's just say I'd LOVE that idea.

XM9 (90s On 9) is also another good source.

1998-2001 CHR had so much life and was so fun to listen to. That all started to die off after 9-11. I miss that period.
______________

Same with Sirius Hits 1 on ch 1. I never got to listen to CHR/Pop from 1996 to 2001, when WBUS of then Kankakee IL was sold to Z Spanish Broadcasting. I doubt corporate radio would try Retro CHR.

I have heard an occasional 90's song on Sirius Hits 1. With mostly 90's on The Pulse, I wouldn't call it true Retro Pop since most markets in the early 90's didn't even have a pop station. The Pulse rarely plays hip-hop. But I have caught an occasional 80's song on the Pulse too. If they had an actual 90's only channel, then it would sound like pop radio in markets that did have CHR/Pop. As for traditional radio, I really don't see any corporation trying retro radio.

As do I. However, a couple years ago I thought of doing just a full day of Retro CHR programming once a month on what would otherwise be a normal CHR station. I called it "Throwback Thursday". Take a full 24 hours and play music from that month 5 years ago... and include the imaging the station was using (if it had been a CHR at that point in time, of course) back then as well. A little blast from the past couldn't hurt now and then, and that's something I'm sure corporate radio wouldn't mind too much.
______________
