Kansas Reyes Media buying 105.9 KKSW in Lawrence

The official word is simply that Great Plains will retain KLWN and KMXN. Interpret that how you will.

While I was surprised to read that announcement and with who the buyer is, I'm not entirely surprised Great Plains disposed of 105.9. It hasn't put much effort into that station in a long time. As recently as six months ago, someone told me every shift at the station was tracked and that it was very lazily programmed.
Middays (10-2) are jockless, and the morning show is pretty formulaic and is just a few breaks an hour. They were doing a Kansas Lottery scratchers giveaway this morning, but I didn't hear the winner. The only thing that makes them stand out in terms of the Lawrence stations is the local music show Sunday nights and that they run KU football games.

It’s been a few months since anything was posted here - as of now, ‘Kiss’ is still running as-is. Have yet to hear official word as to when (if) the switch will be made.
The sale is supposed to close tonight. It's been reported on the RadioInsight Post-Christmas Watchlist and in a few local media stories.

I predicted that the sale would close on New Year’s Eve or around that time frame. I do see either ‘YYS or ‘DTD simulcasting on the FM, or at least one of their formats shifting over solely to FM and one of the AMs flips to Spanish Pop.

How confusing...stations that get sold to owners that focus on Spanish-language media drop their English formats out of fear they may not be as profitable as a the format they want.

They bought the station to expand their business model, which is to serve Hispanic audiences in the region. How is that confusing? And where is there any fear as to why they're going to flip it?

That first post that I've quoted is kind of hard to parse, but I think it's implying that the KKSW format may flip before the sale closes, even though there's no indication that the sale has actually closed yet, or that there's an LMA. That statement may have been pivoting off some speculation earlier in the thread. No consummation notice has appeared so far for the sale. Otherwise, there's nothing out of the ordinary about it; it's basically expanding Reyes' reach to FM and to some additional areas of geography in Kansas.

What is mildly interesting is that the sale has had FCC approval since October 2 but has not been consummated as of three months later.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the impact of this pending sale of the local sports broadcasting affiliations.

The KU men's basketball flagship affiliation was moved from KKSW to KMXN, starting with the pre-season game against Arkansas. KU football remained on 105.9 for the remainder of this season.

In a press release issued by KU Athletics regarding this change, they mentioned that a format change was not expected until January. We're only 3 days in on that regard. If they're still broadcasting in English at the end of this month, then we can speculate on whether the sale fell through.

Also, I read through the public sale agreement. It indicated that the ‘KKSW’ call letters are not included in the sale. So, Reyes should be filing a call sign change request in LMS at some point.

I think someone brought that up last year. I pointed out that KJHK will still have students doing KU sports play by play, but not sure if they'll do football and basketball or not.

When station sales happen, all sorts of issues can arise, especially if the buyer is not as well-capitalized as most of the large broadcasters. In the end, the vast majority of them close. Plus, I seem to remember Reyes is involved in more than just the media group, which also has a print and digital division. So, it should be well-poised to get the financing it needs. I also heard one of the owners died last year. That might be one factor delaying the closing. I expect the deal will go through, though I wouldn’t be surprised if it happens a little later than originally expected.

I can’t imagine KU would use students for the play-by-play on football and men's basketball. Those two sports are far too lucrative to put a bunch of students on them. Almost seems like KU goes through Learfield for those two sports. K-State, I'm pretty sure, either does or will.

It's the longtime publisher of Dos Mundos, the bilingual newspaper in Kansas City.

It would surprise me if KU didn't provide the rights to Learfield given Learfield's origins, for compensation, of course. College sports is the money machine that Clyde kind of stumbled into and the Big 8/Big 12/whatever it became were his original customers.

If it becomes KYYS-FM, I predict an earthquake in Tonganoxie.

This is info on KJHK's coverage of KU sports as of 2020 - they covered the Olympic sports of baseball, softball, volleyball and soccer.

But I heard them cover basketball last year, I can't remember if it was a men's or women's game.
Hardly relevant at this point, but I still miss The Lazer. In its day that was a pretty good radio station.
It was the best alternative station available in KC before it flipped formats. 107.3 The X was ok too, but it was shortlived.
