Rick Dees on iHeart

The last several weeks the station looping the current weekly show has been skipping the last show segment. Songs 40-2 play and then the show restarts.

Hmmm. Seems like they have issues with the automation on these. A lot of this issues also occurred on the Classic AT 40 Channel.

I caught the ending of the current show on the iHeart channel last night and the show was played correctly. And Rick once again invited all of his listeners to download and check out his channel on the iHeartMusic app. Cringe.

One thing is pretty obvious is the ANNOYING RICK DEES AND THE WEEKLY TOP 40 JINGLES added to the songs being played on the countdown. Too much.

Are they really playing that many jingles compared to the American Top 40 classic replays? On those, there is the same split of "Casey's Coast to Coast" into breaks and "American Top 40" out of breaks as was the case when those were new shows, but because the shows have now been reformatted to have fewer breaks, three times an hour those jingles play back-to-back in the middle of a segment.

The jingles/segment formatics are identical to AT40. Perhaps it's a reference to the short parody clips where soundalikes alter the opening lyrics to songs to make lyrics about Rick and the countdown? And yes, he still does that on the current 2025 shows, and it sounds so out of place.

Thanks. I haven't heard Rick's countdown since he left KIIS-FM all those years ago.

Perhaps Mr. Dees should seriously consider retirement. He's had a good run, but I would find it sad if he pushes it to the point where people would start feeling sorry for him.

I like that he still does the parody song intros. I miss Don LaFontaine as the "big voice guy" on the Weekly Top 40.

At one point I remember reading on Rick's website or in an article about him, that his son was helping him off air with the countdown/other stuff behind the scenes. What I was struck by when I started listening to the Weekly Top 40 again a few years ago, after around 10 years of not listening, is how Rick's voice has changed. I don't know how else to say it, and this isn't meant to sound ageist or mean, but Rick sounds old. I still find him entertaining, but I expected him to sound the same as he did 10/20/30 years ago, kind of like Poorman or Richard Blade.

Since I never stopped listening to Casey Kasem I never noticed his voice aging. But if you listen to a show from the AT20/AT10 era of 2006-2009 it's a stark contrast to the Casey we still hear each week on the 70s and 80s replays.

I don't dislike Rick and I was a Weekly Top 40 P1 for many years. But he just doesn't connect with the CHR audience and hasn't for a long time. I feel like he'd be better off hosting some type of retro show (not to mention have the possibility of having more affiliates that the current Weekly Top 40)

But he already has his old 80s and 90s shows people can listen to via his app.

That is what I was going for. It's invented into current songs where it's RICK DEES AND THE WEEKLY TOP 40; Good example is Lady Gaga's Abracadabra.

I meant if he stil wanted to host a current show in addition to the replays, something for Classic Hits would likely be a better connection with an audience that wants to hear a show from Rick

Rick Dees was approached, after he left KIIS-FM, to do mornings at KRTH. He turned them down, saying he would "never be an 'oldies' jock".

I doubt his reluctance has changed.

That's a shame. He'd be perfect to resurrect some version of 'Americas Greatest Hits' that was hosted by Scott Shannon.

I've been ripping the Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 Classic channel for about a year now. I love listening to the old shows I listened to as a kid in the 80s and 90s. I wish I could purchase his entire 80s and 90s catalog for personal listening.

Have they been refreshing the shows that air on the channel? I know the AT40 70s & 80s channel has been pretty good about switching out shows and keeping it fresh. Meanwhile the AT40 90s & 2000s channel has offered the same limited rotation of shows since the station signed on, and it seems the Bob Kingsley channel is headed down that same road.

I took a break during last Winter and when I came back in April I immediately was able to get about 10 shows I didn't already have archived. Then I took a weekend break 2 weeks ago. Came back and they started playing End of Year Countdowns starting from '92 to 2003. Top 92 of '92, Top 93 of '93, etc... But for some odd reason they only played the first half of '96. Even during the 2nd playthrough it still wasn't there. Last couple days has been already archived shows. The Rick Dees app though had 2 brand new shows from 80s and 90s respectively. Seems they won't touch anything from 1983-1985. And 1991 seems verboten too.

Yeah, I don't think any of the early shows have ever been made available in any of the retro Dees packages that have been syndicated or posted to the app

I've seen complete AT 40 shows from the 70s and 80s on EBAY from time to time. Complete shows on a flash drive. Growing up I was more Team Casey than Team Rick. That said I will need to check out his old shows for my dose of vitamin N (nostalgia).
