Ricky The K's Solid Gold Time Machine

I had seen some previous posts about Ricky The K's Solid Gold Time Machine at http://60sradio.com so I decided to check it out. I ended up subscribing. I think that it is better money spent versus XM and Sirius because of a wider selection of music, not to mention the old commercials, jingles and fun personlity.
 
It is about as authentic sixties as can be. Ricky tries to re-create the sound of WABC circa 1966. I remember that his playlist is over 3000 songs and he will not play any song twice in a month.

I have airchecks of Ricky on KOMA from 1992. At KOMA he did weather reports and played real spots as well as nostalgic ones. He was also giving out the real time.

I also have him doing the KOMA Doo Wop Shop which is very different from his top 40 show. Email me if you want a trade.

Ricky is Icky!

The original posts were from Ricky himself. I heard his Demo show Mp3's, and thought very little of him, or the old commercials he plays. The show is OK for a small or medium market Station, as that's where Ricky's talent level lies!

Fair enough, however the bottom line about this guy...

My original post about Ricky, which in retrospect could have been considered an advertisement for his service, and was removed by the excellent Moderators here, stemmed from the emails Ricky managed to send to thousands of us who have visited an Air check or Oldies site. That he charges the SAME amount it costs to subscribe to XM or Sirius just for his Oldies show is absurd~

You want an Oldies show. One I learned of right here on this board. It's Truckin' Tom Kent with his coast to coast show. And it's free!

There are a few flaws in your argument. First you question Ricky The K's ability, when it seems like your major complaint is the cost of a subscription to the show. It would appear to me that the show is charging what it is charging because it can get it. If it couldn't get it, it would charge less.
You should also give Ricky The K and his staff credit for going up against XM and Sirius who are corporations trading on the New York Stock Exchange. It is probably a much smaller company going against two larger corporations. Add to that, that Ricky The K's Solid Gold Time Machine is far superior to XM's 60s
channel which is mostly voice tracked and automated and Sirius's 60s oldies channel which is also automated and has a much smaller playlist. It is my opinion that if all you are subscribing to XM or Sirius for is the 60s channels,
you get more for your money with Ricky The K's Solid Gold Time Machine. That's
why I am a subscriber.

I subscribed to the show for a time and enjoyed it before I had XM and Sirius. At the time, I was also still stuck with dial-up, so it took FOREVER to download the shows. I was also spending a lot of time on WinMx downloading airchecks back then, so I was often putting off downloading the shows or simply forgetting to do it. If I didn't have XM and Sirius, I would probably consider subscribing again now that I have broadband. The only real down side I can see to the show is that for the price you only get 15 hours a week.

I wish XM or Sirius would consider picking up his show and allowing him to do it live.

I have a high speed internet connection and can download the show files very quickly. As far as the issue of fifteen hours a week, when you factor in XM's
and Sirius's voice tracking, the fifteen hours a week of new programming on Ricky's show is about the same amount as XM or Sirius gives in new programming
each week.
 
I subscribed for one month, just to record him and have the airchecks.

I would think that you would want to stay subscribed because every week and show is different and if you like him, as I do, you should support the show.

Why pay for Ricky when you get Hyski for free?

Sirius could probably use a show like this. From what I've heard, except for Cousin Brucie they're weak on special programming. On the other hand, XM '50s does a great job with Pink & Black Days, Rockabilly Road Trip, Cool Bobby B, Daddy Dave's Hollywood Diner and Harlem.

The answer to this is that Hy Lit sounds old. His best days are behind him. Ricky sounds like a 60s disc jockey, not an old man. Ricky plays 3000 songs versus Hy Lit's 2000 songs. Ricky does not repeat a song for 3 months. Ricky has way more sung jingles for his show than anybody on-the air, on satellite or on internet. Ricky's show plays in the thousands of original 60s commercials. Ricky is a funny and knowledgable personality. You get what you pay for.

I love hylit.com but it is not Ricky The K. It is pretty much a jukebox with great Philly music and great jingles and promotions from Hyski, but it is not live AM sixties top 40 station. Ricky The K is.

Hits Of Yesteryear with Glenn Sauter. Glenn does a good job in creating the great sixties sound and he also has great music. He may even get a bit more obscure than Ricky, but it is hard to notice that.

I am a fan and subscriber of Ricky The K's Solid Gold Time Machine. If you look
at the Classic Radio Message Board, I wrote about the difference between WCFL and WLS. I will be writing about various things in the future. My focus is Ricky The K versus XM, Sirius and various other competition for the present.

I checked your history, only see posts about Ricky. Do you use other names here?

To tell you the truth, I was "dis-ed" by Ricky. But I will keep that between us. The only reason that I say nice things about his show, is that it is a good quality show that is true to the sound of sixties Top 40 radio.

Ricky may have his drawbacks, but when it comes to producing a radio show or producing jingles, when he did that, he is a total perfectionist.

He is determined to put out a quality sound and he does.
