RIP: 103.3 KJOJ-FM Freeport 1985-2022

I don't think their 65 dBu signal covered 500,000 people, much less a million. I could be wrong though on that one.
But I'm not sure if there are a lot of first-gen Mexicans within the coverage area of the late KJOJ, either.

Around the time KGLF became KJOJ, a good car radio would get it in San Antonio, though I don’t think it ever got any listeners there. After KJOJ 106.9 was bought and became Smooth Jazz KJZS, KJOJ moved to 103.3 and was immediately dissatisfied with its signal coverage. Its solution was to buy KIKR “Kicker 880” and simulcast KJOJ there.

The liner was....Kiss 98.5 The Best Variety of the Hits and Dusties.. I don't remember any of the air staff, but i think Jammin' Jay Lamont was on that station.

Kiss 98.5 ran a straight ahead urban format until KFMK 97.9 became KBXX. It decided it couldn’t compete with both KBXX and KMJQ. So, it became urban AC “Y-98.5.” That was ultimately unsuccessful, and Clear Channel decided, “if you can’t beat 'em, buy 'em,” and bought KBXX and KMJQ. Then, it put the urban AC format on Majic.

what about license deleted and call sign deleted arent clear enough?

They could re introduce the allocation at auction the allocation in the future, if someone doesnt file upgrades to prevent it
It was squeezed in already...102.9 in Houston had it boxed down at the coast..the tower was 1 mile from the Gulf of Mexico..Liberman had thought of trying to put 96.9 and 103.3 on the same tower as possible C0s at one time, at least when I was asst CE there..hate to see 103.3 gone...but it was doomed from the start...Bill Cordell built it originally and then sold it as soon as possible since he knew it could never get closer to Houston..hell, he had to smooth talk Dave Morris who owned 102.9 just to get the license app thru..Dave wanted to upgrade KQUE but Bill reminded him it was short spaced with KAJN Lafayette so 103.3 would not change anything.. Dave didn't protest the application after that

KJOJ's demise has actually helped K277DE. I was listening to it yesterday, on FM1464 from the Westpark Tollway, south to West Belfort. It was pretty solid.

In light of recent events, I wouldn't be surprised if they're trying to unload their own radio division. The TelevisaUnivision merger probably changed the vision of the company. IIRC, Televisa didn't own a single radio station in Mexico.
In fact, they sold half their radio division and an LMA on the other half some years ago to PRISA from Spain. Later, they sold the remaining interest to local investors. Televisa had been using radio as a repository for outdated or ineffective TV executives and had been losing lots of money. Azcárraga Jaen said that they "did not know how to do radio any more."

The KJOJ 103.3 simulcast with 98.5 started in late 1995. It remained in place for the next 25 years until KJOJ’s demise. It began with “Smooth FM”, then the second incarnation of Kiss, then Jammin’ Oldies, followed by La Raza.
I remember hearing Jammin' Oldies in San Antonio before KBBT came on, around 2000 or so.

That's true, right now at least... However if a translator pops up on 103.3 from the south side, might not surprise me.

Salem is probably the big winner with this deletion. A "letting out" of the directional antenna to the south definitely possible or perhaps even a bigger upgrade moving to a taller structure.

Here is a screen shot from the the translator application where you can see that the directional pattern is mostly attributable to KJOJ's presence.

Since that LPFM in Conroe was cancelled, I don’t see why the translator can’t go omnidirectional.

Action starting to happen now that KJOJ is no more: Bustos Media has applied to move K259DC to 103.3, with 10 watts at 104 meters from a tower just south of where Almeda, Holmes and Bellfort Roads all cross one another. The translator will rebroadcast KREH.

K259DC is currently licensed to 99.7 with 30 watts from a cell tower near the intersection of West Holcomb and Buffalo speedway, but I have never heard it on the air.

I suspect we may see more translator filings for 103.3 in the south side of the market in the near future.
