RIP CD 92.9

I never listened, but wow, with this being the third time I wonder if there will be a fourth. I never enjoyed the format but I know many who did.
Wonder if 92.9 will again become a Delaware-focused station? 96.7/1270 tries to be that for both Delaware and Marysville, but maybe this will allow them to make that a Marysville outlet and 92.9/1550 Delaware again. How it should be, IMO.

They opted to not renew the LMA

From Brent Casagrande om Facebook:

"On December 1, 2020, Delmar communications and WWCD LTD entered into an agreement to broadcast WWCD formerly on 102.5 on Delmar's Radio frequencies 92.9 FM 1550AM and 1580.
This agreement was for three year with an option to renew for another three-year term. The agreement also contained an option to purchase the radio frequencies during the six-year term.
Randy Malloy, president of WWCD Ltd has opted not to renew the agreement. At midnight February 1, 2024, WWCD in its current form will cease broadcasting on the Delmar frequencies. Delmar Media is happy to report it will continue the legacy of WWCD by debuting A new and refreshing version of The NEW WWCD at that time. The NEW WWCD will continue its support of local artist and some of the legacy programs that have made the station a favorite of central Ohio radio listeners. According to Brent Casagrande, president of Delmar media, We will be reinstating free online streaming and a full complement of online digital products through our website at www.cd929columbus.com and streaming through the TuneIN Application. We wish to thank Randy Malloy for his contributions to WWCD over the years and wish him well in his future endeavors."

I don’t think Mr. Malloy is a very good businessman. I thought It was a head scratcher when he sold 101.1 a signal that he actually owned outright only to lease another signal at 102.5. I wouldn’t sell my house to rent an apartment. Just saying.

I'm curious how much money his outfit had spent to WHIZ and Delmar over the years with those LMAs. Can't imagine it saved them any money at all.

Well in Randy's defense - It's more complicated than that. 101.1 was owned by Roger Vaughn's Fun with Radio - they are the ones who sold 101.1 to lease 102.5 instead - During the lease of 102.5 Fun with Radio had a dispute with the owners of 102.5 and almost lost the lease of the license to a LMA with Salem. Randy purchased the Intellectual property of Fun with Radio in 2017 and when they could not come up with a agreement to stay on 102.5 a few years later they ended up striking a deal with 1550/1580/92.9 and now are in the same situation they were with 102.5- could not come to a deal so their walking away again.

To be honest, if you can't even close a deal to buy two marginal high-band AMs and their FM translators, something else might be an issue.

Fair enough - I am just an outsider so I have no clue personally on the details on the inside. I always thought the format was going to face struggles when the original owners sold 101.1 to Ohio State. They had a license and opted to move to a lease instead and anytime you do that you're at the mercy of that lease payment each month to keep going and you don't get to set the terms of said lease. It's like me renting an apartment. I accept the lease renewal cost or walk away.

According to columbusunderground.com,

Casagrande told Columbus Underground during a followup phone call that conversations with Malloy were “at an impasse” and that they had decided not to renew “for a myriad of reasons”.

Makes you wonder

I can't imagine how difficult it is to operate a standalone with what has turned into a niche format on a translator in 2024. I respect the hell out of Randy and the entire staff for fighting the good fight as long as they did. I live very far away now but I grew up in Springfield.. I had an amplified TV antenna hooked up to my stereo only so I could pick up CD 101 and put it on cassette tapes to play for my friends. I will always have a fond memory of them. Best of luck to all involved currently and in the past. Cheers to CD101, 102.5, and 92.9. 🍻
