RIP Chuck Collier

What a shame.

Definite legend, and will be missed.

Heaven has a great station with Chuck, Gary Dee, Pete Franklin, Casey Coleman, and Geoff Sindelar.

I am stunned, and profoundly saddened. Chuck was the most relatable jock I ever heard. More importantly he was an incredibly kind, caring human being. We spoke just a couple week ago at Bruce Ryan's funeral. I am grateful that I just happened to be listening to his last shift (even if it was VT) on Saturday. I cannot believe he is gone.

Emperor Joe, Paxton Mills, JR Nelson, Bruce Ryan, Chris Quinn, now the Chucker; if there's a WGAR heaven you know they've got a hell of a staff.

I know that he had a lot of success in Cleveland...but I worked with Chuck in New York City when we were both at WCBS-FM back in the mid-seventies. He was a terrific talent and a great guy. My old friend will be missed. My sincerest condolences to Chuck's family and all of his friends in Cleveland. Sincerely, Jim Harrington

I had the pleasure of meeting Chuck many years ago in the 70's as a newby DJ at a station
in Wilmington, Ohio. (No...he never worked there, but I think he knew the owner, or something like that).

He was very kind and gave me lots of encouragement as I was starting my broadcasting career. And, over the years, whenever I would get within earshot, I would listen to Chuck and clearly heard the incredible broadcaster and talent he certainly was.

May he rest in peace.

I've already said a lot on the blog, but I wanted to share my two cents here as well.

As I tell folks from time to time, when you do a blog like that, you "hear everything"...both good and bad... about local broadcasters.

Chuck was, in the 6 years I've been doing OMW, one of the most universally liked and praised local media personalities in my various private conversations with others in this business.

Back in the early 1970's, just as the big 1220, WGAR was being born, I was programming my very first radio station, WSLR (Whistler) down the road in Akron. I was a young turk and so was Chuck Collier. His radio station was a major influence on me then and even now. John Lund, Chuck Collier, the legendary GM Jack Thayer, and of course Don Imus. What a wonderful radio station led by a terrific team of talent. WGAR was awarded Billboard Magazine's station of the year in 1972 or 73, and ironically I was named Air Personality of the year at the same event. Classy guys that they were, and since my station wouldn't fly me there, the crew at WGAR accepted my award and brought it back home for me to pick up. Chuck and I stayed in touch off and on through the years but more on a casual level. What a kind, decent, friendly, gracious guy he was. When I read this, I was hurt. He was a rare talent, given his smooth, resonant voice and consistent delivery. But what I remember most is what a really nice guy he was. My condolences to those who knew him better. He will be missed. Craig Scott

Mr. Harrington... Thank you. It's very difficult for us here in Northeast OH to remember a time when Chuck didn't "belong" to Cleveland listeners. We appreciate you sharing your memories of working with Chuck on this board.
