RIP KRZR 103.7

Well, kenrayc, It looks like i owe you an apology. You were right. I thought it might have been just a rumor. But it happened. BTW, KMRQ- Rock 96.7 lives on, with Skippy too.

...I've listened for about a half-hour.. If this isn't the worst thing to hit the Fresno radio airwaves in years, what is? So, how quick until someone moves to fill the void? Bets?

I am curious? When did the station changed its format? What was the name of the LAST Rock song and what was the name of the FIRST Rhythmic Song?

As for Clear Channel keeping the "low rating Country station".....forget about the ratings for a moment and consider this.

The monthly billing for KRZR and Big Country were about the same...KRZR had a full staff and KHGE runs with ZERO talent expense. Which one is more PROFITABLE?

Mark my words...they will run The Beat jockless for as long as possible (maybe forever) and if CC can maintian the revenue that KRZR had, their margin goes up dramatically IN SPITE of losing audience shares. Sad fact but the money counts for more than the ratings.

YEP thats Clear Channel taking away all local talent, for low ratings , come to think of it there NOW not a Fresno CLEAR CHANNEL station I can Listen to, the rest, LOTUS, PEAK, and what ever, YES, BUT CLEAR CHANNEL NO.

Well, R.I.P. KRZR. Even though I like rhythmic ACs, I don't like ones that lean very urban, and this station is one of them. Very stupid decision indeed.

KRZR is somewhat trending on Twitter, search KRZR and you'll see many complaints about the flip since the past 3 hours.

I disagree that the BEAT leans very urban. They are playing the most mainstream, familiar rhythmic hits from that era that you could find. Everything I heard them play crossed over to CHR and mosts of the songs were in fact big CHR hits.

If anybody remembers, the Fresno Rhythmics in the late 80s/early 90s did not just play these national hits. They played tons of songs that had little or no airplay elsewhere. They often made big local hits out of them. Some examples include Abstract-Right and Hype, Nu Girls-Rush On Me, and Chris Bender-Baby Girl. Of course they played tons of freestyle and were heavily rotating rap songs like "Me So Horny" and "The Humpty Dance" before most stations in other markets even touched it.

Earlier in this thread there was some discussion if KRZR was legendary or not. I was leaning towards no but after reading the endless amount of angry (I never saw the F bomb that many times on one page before) comments on their Facebook page (which has since been taken down) it hit me that the station will go down as legendary. 20 years heritage in a format really is a long time. There are 35 year old rock fans who listened to the station every day since they were 15.

Fresno becomes a PPM market next year, they are trying to secure the widest
audience and ratings, where Rock has not done as well in other PPM markets.

Rock sure does well in Sacramento. But I do agree that this will be a PPM friendly format. Plus it will give MEGA some competition.

KRZR flipped at 12 Noon October 6th (2010). Its last song as The Wild Hare was "Freedom" by Rage Against The Machine. The first song as The Beat was "Get Ready For This" by 2 Unlimited.

So could this mean the end of Rock 96.7 soon?
I doubt it. Unlike Fresno, where there are several different rock stations, there are only 2 in Modesto, Active Rock KMRQ-96.7 & Classic Rock KHKK-104.1. CC pulled the plug once on Rock 96.7 (in favor of La Preciosa) but flipped it back to Active Rock 3 years later. It may not be there forever (or as long as KRZR), but KMRQ will be here for awhile.

This was posted on another thread but it may belong here better

I've heard David Kane more than a few times (reading the news too?) He doesn't sound like he is from Fresno, he must be doing it from a Clear Channel major market, he sounds way too strong to be a Fresno jox (or talent since he's not a dj)

Young Jizzo sounds bored, no suprise there

Don't know about David Kane in particular, but most Fresno traffic reporters are based in either San Francisco or LA

A young gal I know at B-95 has confirmed David Kane is local and he has also taken over the morning news for the Clear Channel cluster. CC must have brought him in from a bigger market. Strange his name doesn't appear on the company employee list though.

Steve Weed has been named Operations Manager, taking over for Paul Wilson

BELOW WAS POSTED THE DAY OF THE KRZR FLIP
interesting...just found out David Kane is David Caudillo, which explains all the "major market sound" comments on this thread...it also may explain 103.7 The Beat...no way Clear Channel brought him in to do "traffic"

Jeff Davis is the OM at Mega, David was the PD or APD, not to mention he was the MD at 94.3 when Greg Mack owned it, back when the rap on 103.7 the beat was new...maybe the beat 103.7 does makes sense

what doesn't make sense is CC dumping KRZR completely and keeping "little" country 102.7

KRZR or KKDJ?

I am curious, for those that live in Fresno or the area. Which rock station was the best "IN THEIR PRIME?" KRZR-103.7 or KKDJ-105.9? I have had people email to say that while KRZR was good, it was not as legendary as rock staion, KKDJ. That KKDJ had the best dj's and played a WIDER range of AOR/Rock Music.

I'd say KKDJ, but in the earlier day's (early 80's/"IN THEIR PRIME"), more personality overall. But (not mentioned from the adjacent market) KLBS-FM 104.7 - Los Banos, same time frame. (Now KHTN) Just upgraded from at "Class A" 3kw 95.9 to a "B1" 50kw "Free Form/Full Range" anything for the "moment" with the primary focus of "ROCK" integrated with other genres. It would not be unusual to hear AC/DC, southern rock (with a taste of Waylon), Zappa to Spike Jones (for example). Oh yea weekends included a few blind random album cuts played based on the type album art. (No promo album was ever tossed out, just put in the secondary library), and "Soul" with "Mr. D" Sunday afternoon.

Re: KRZR or KKDJ?

What other rock stations have Fresno had before KKDJ-105.9. I know these calls date back to the mid or late 1970's as they were used on a Los Angeles station before it was used on 105.9. Was there any AOR or Free Form radio stations in Fresno from the very late 1960's to mid 1970's on the FM dial?

Now you can win a free HD radio at krzr.com. :-X

This will just make KFRR that much better. I haven't listened to KRZR much since they ess-canned the Front Row for Mancow. They sure did bet on the wrong horse err cow there.

Well we should throw the original KBOS 94.9 "THE BOSS" in the ring.

This is like 1983, When to only other ROCK station was KKDJ 105.9 and KBOS 94.9 went top 40, and this is a hard question because all three peaked in a different time eras. THE BOSS played the rock in in the late 70s and early 80's, In 1979 (I WAS 18 at the time When KKDJ came on "The Dean and Don show was great" and kept listening to them in the morning and listen to Both for music KBOS and KKDJ. KKDJ had a good AOR format, With the New Wave Music I say there Peak is mid 80s, .

In 1989 When KRZR 103.7 went on the the air in 1989 I switched To KRZR on the Day they Changed as we all know is June 17, I did switched
and listen to KRZR, The Front Row, E. Curtis, and all the rest , They ROCKED played THE METAL and KKDJ was playing the electric lunch from the 60s. KKDJ got blown away and went to the EDGE, the rest is history.

Hey if KFRR would be smart Dump Kevin& Bean and Love Lines, and hire local talent, how about those that worked at KRZR in the past, Rick, Doug and The Rev, and Koyote that knows Active Rock and KRZR. KRZR has always dominated over KFRR and from the start even when KFRR was "It justs rocks" playing active rock METAL artists with the alternative.

105.1 The Blaze of course is who I see being the one that will dominate.
