RIP Pulse 87

For those that missed it, Alex Shvarts, CEO of Mega Media (the company leasing the station from the owner Island Broadcasting) announced on air that Pulse 87 would be leaving the air as of 5PM on Fri. 10/30/09. Alex thanked DJs past & present, station staff, advertisers, fans & friends of the station (including Tony Santiago of The NY Dance Music Coalition).

1st song after the announcement: Pink's "Please Don't Leave Me".

From Facebook:

Pulse87 There is no Easy way to say this. But at 5pm Pulse87 will cease to broadcast. For the last 20 months we had the priveledge to serve over one million of looayl listeners. We the dance fans will have a place in history with Pulse87. There are so many to thank who were committed to our station and went above and beyoned the call of duty. Long Live Dance music, God Bless all of you who stood by our side and supported us.

Why is dance so cursed?

1. Groove 103.1 Los Angeles
2. Energy 92.7/5 Chicago (IMO, the best)
3. 102.1 X Denver
4. 103.1 KDL Los Angeles
5. 106.7 KDL Dallas
6. (and now) Pulse 87 New York

I still wonder if a watered-down dance format (CHR/Dance) on a more powerful signal would have better luck. I mean, KTU did quite well in the 90s.

I guess they could not afford the spell check bill either? ;D

You know, say what you want to say, but at least this station compared to the corporate controlled stations, and the other disasters that this market had, Pulse had the b***s to be different and catered to the REAL listeners.

What I will miss the most about Pulse...The mixshows and that's including Glenn Friscia's Saturday Night Dance Party.

Today is a sad day to see a great dance station leave us. :(

Rest in Peace Pulse...you will never ever be forgotten.

Most dance stations will continue to fail in the US because they cater to a niche of dance purists die hards. That's about 1 % percent anywhere you go. Sure,Pulse had other issues but it was never going to get a 2 or 3 million cume even on a stronger signal.

Still,This has been a great year for uptempo rhythmic music. Who would have thought at the beginning of the year that a Latin Hip House song would almost reach the top spot on Billboard or that a electro hip hop song would stay on top for 14 weeks or so. Of course, most people just see these songs by Pitbull and BEP respectfully, as good party music and that's why they're so successful.

I was there at the Pulse 87 studio when Alex Shvarts made the announcement, and I am thankful that my name was mentioned on the air :)

Yes, this is a sad time for dance music fans in New York City but you know what? I'm not going to feel down or upset! If anything I am happy because for 20 months, New York City had a FANTASTIC radio station whose interests catered DIRECTLY towards us, the dance fans that wanted a lot more than what other stations sounding "rhythmic" had offered. Pulse 87 wasn't just a station to me...it was family! From the very beginnings with Star and Buc Wild to the final moments with Borasio and Niko with DJ Serg mixing, Pulse 87 made my day everyday!

Sure, there are going to be pundits that will knock the station down for whatever quirks it had (bad signal, low dial position, the "ratings", etc.) That doesn't matter because with all said and done, Pulse did one thing which nowadays is VERY TOUGH to do....bring people BACK to terrestrial radio. In this age of Internet, digital media players, it is refreshing to have experienced an FM terrestrial radio station that really mattered to us.

As they say, one door closes, another one opens. And we hope to get that door open soon! We'll fight. We'll do whatever it takes in a positive and proactive manner.

THANK YOU Pulse 87! Now it's time for me to "get to work" here :)

Anyone know what will happen at 5pm? Will there still be music from maybe another station taking over?

Well, if you live around Newark, NJ, you will continue to hear "Compact FM" bleed through on 87.7 since they are on 87.9.

And what will happen in ny?Just dead air like a couple of days ago?And also if mega media can get out of bankrupcty will the station come back?

We need to have a campaign of writing and calling Emmis to see if they might re-hire Joel Salkowitz and bring Pulse to the struggling 101.9 frequency. Or at the very least, put Joel's "Original Hot 97" online station on WQHT's HD signal. Emmis certainly has had the history and experience with a dance format in the past. Does anyone know if Joel left on good terms with Emmis, or if they would re-hire him?

Joel has done it before, and I bet if he were given the 101.9 signal he could create a major dance/rhythmic Pplayer for Emmis. I would think it would certainly beat the current AAA format (as well as crosstown Now FM as well). Anyone think it could happen?

First...BRH, stand by, that's just one of the plans we have for the coalition! :)

Secondly, I'm hearing that a MAJOR announcement is supposed to come down at 6PM from somewhere. Since Pulse 87 will have been off the air, it won't be from them. As soon as I know, I will post it :)

Sounds promising. Let's hope a big announcement does happen. It would be great to have dance (or even a dance/rhythmic hybrid) on a full market signal (like 101.9 or 92.3). That would be the best announcement. But a new HD format, I guess, would be the next best thing. Who knows, CBS was quick to launch "Pulse Radio" on HD in San Francisco when Energy 92.7 flipped, so maybe they are going to bring that to NYC on an HD signal. I'm still hoping though, that Emmis might give dance another shot on a regular, full power signal. I could see a hybrid dance/CHR format doing well. (Maybe something along the lines of Galaxy or Kiss in the UK, or Z103.5 or Virgin Radio in Toronto). Who knows.

Even though I'm not in NYC, I'm with y'all in spirit though. I caught the announcement earlier today on my iphone via the Pulse streaming app. And I've been a loyal online listener of Pulse since the beginning. (As well as listening everytime I'm in NYC and NJ.). Good luck Tony.

most people see those songs as great party tunes cos that's exactly what they are..

So its safe to say that people don't hate dance music after all. It's just that most dance songs fall flat excluding the Akons Flo rida Pitbull Lady Gaga etc..
