The audio on 87.7 can't be pirate. I'm nearly an hour out of NYC to the NW and am hearing the same thing and the static patterns i run into on the drive home are the exact same. The audio itself is really low volume and quality (64K?) and definitely mono source (still ST broadcasting). It's certainly a filler to something.

They may be running strictly off the TV transmitter, that may be why the audio is poor.

It's not TV audio, just poorly sourced audio

First...BRH, stand by, that's just one of the plans we have for the coalition! :)

Secondly, I'm hearing that a MAJOR announcement is supposed to come down at 6PM from somewhere. Since Pulse 87 will have been off the air, it won't be from them. As soon as I know, I will post it :)

I'm going to take a wild stab at a speculation...New Management!

Here's something weird, was traveling back to NY for the weekend, and in Trenton on 92.9 heard Pulse 87 around 6:30pm ID and all. I thought hey now they've expanded they're coverage to central Jersey, got to ny and all I heard was continuous dance mixes, with some great songs in it such as Culture beat feel your love, haven't heard that in a while. Now that I'm here and you guys said, they went off the air at 5pm, do you think that they are going to keep pulse alive on this pirate? If so, maybe we should contact them and see if they can up the power to bring into the NYC area?

I tried the "Pulse 87" app on my iPod Touch and suddenly nothing! What is going on with this streaming app? It says "Pulse 87" on it and all I hear is nothing, just dead silence. Does anyone have the final minutes of streaming on "Pulse 87" right up until dead air comes on at 10:58 PM?

Party 105 on Long Island has just changed its call letters from WDRE to WPTY. A Wiki entry (posted by Tony Santiago on another thread) for WPTY says that Party 105 is expected to take over the 87.7 New York frequency on Mon. 11/2/2009.
Keeping in mind it's Wikipedia, as the saying goes: "[citation needed]" & read at your own risk: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WPTY_(FM)
Stay tuned for further details on this breaking story...

If it's a pirate (and it sounds like it is) what would Pulse 87 have to do with them?

Why is dance so cursed?

1. Groove 103.1 Los Angeles
2. Energy 92.7/5 Chicago (IMO, the best)
3. 102.1 X Denver
4. 103.1 KDL Los Angeles
5. 106.7 KDL Dallas
6. (and now) Pulse 87 New York

I still wonder if a watered-down dance format (CHR/Dance) on a more powerful signal would have better luck. I mean, KTU did quite well in the 90s.

You can add KNGY Energy 92.7 - San Francisco. Recently switched to KREV- 92.7 REV FM (Top 40) The revolution!

Open letter from Joel Salkowitz:

An Open Letter from Joel Salkowitz

PULSE 87 was a phenomenon! A radio station at the remote end of the FM dial….a place where nobody was likely to stumble on it by accident….on a challenged signal and virtually no resources found its’ way into the hearts and, more importantly, the ears of over a million people in New York! We did something here that people actually sought out. In the current radio climate, that is nothing short of amazing.

There is absolutely no doubt that if we had put this format on a full power FM here in New York that it would have been a much bigger success than any of the other recent format changes that were made in the market during our time here at 87.7. This was the only format change in New York, since CBS-FM switched BACK to classic hits, that anyone in this city actually cared about or showed real passion for. In this day of automated, voice-tracked, syndicated, centrally programmed radio stations, PULSE 87 was a breath of fresh air to a lot of people.

I want to thank my amazing staff that worked through the toughest conditions and put on what was just an outstanding radio station! For all the drama about the company that made it into the news and trades, it never came out on the radio. There’s just no way to say enough about that. These people fought an amazing fight and did it with one hand tied behind their backs! Their efforts helped to, among other things, force music and artists onto other stations in the market that would never have seen the light of day had we not been here! PULSE 87 also transformed much of the club scene in the New York area from Hip Hop to Dance and demonstrated that radio still had the ability to energize an audience! All you have to do is engage them! To all the trade publications and sites, record labels, area clubs and artists…especially the local artists…that supported us, I thank you too. Some of the things we did just would not have been possible without your support.

PULSE 87 proved that a well programmed Top 40/Dance format can work in the right markets. Don’t ever let anyone tell you that the demise of this station has anything to do with the viability of the format. Never forget that HOT 97 and POWER 106, when they did ostensibly the same format, were the stations that beat Z100 and KIIS-FM respectively!!

In the meantime, for all the fans that will miss us and the radio folks out there that remember one of New York’s legendary stations and still want to hear great dance music, you can get it on my internet radio station at www.originalhot97.com.

Hardrocker.

I FULLY trust Vic Latino and am confident that he knows what he is doing. And if he feels that the Party 105 format as it is now, has to be tweaked in order to become more danceable to the followers of Pulse 87, he will do it!

I have 100 percent backing on him

Does anyone have a link to the 12:15 sign off announcement?

I haven't seen a posting of the audio from the announcement of Pulse 87's leaving the air. Hopefully someone will post it somewhere & it'll get added to these forums. EDIT: just saw Tony's post - maybe we'll get a response.

Alex Shvarts, CEO of Mega Media Group spoke using similar words to these posted on Pulse 87's Facebook page (original grammar/punctuation/misspellings intact):

"Pulse87: There is no Easy way to say this. But at 5pm Pulse87 will cease to broadcast. For the last 20 months we had the priveledge to serve over one million of looayl listeners. We the dance fans will have a place in history with Pulse87. There are so many to thank who were committed to our station and went above and beyoned the call of duty. Long Live Dance music, God Bless all of you who stood by our side and supported us. Fri at 12:31pm"

Shvarts went into more detail, thanking many people by name who've worked on-air & behind the scenes, advertisers, listeners, fans/supporters: specifically Tony Santiago & "Nick D" Nick Divakar. Shvarts along with DJ Serg & Borasio kept saying it was a sad day for those who worked there as well as the many dance music fans in the NYC Metro area.

Plus there's an Open Letter From Joel Salkowitz, the PD of the now defunct Pulse 87, which shares similar sentiments. It's linked here (scroll down to near end of the page):
