RIP Rock 105

WOW. I left Jax in 94 but I didn't realize it had gotten so extreme in the past year. Heck, I didn't even know that they went the "hair band" route. I missed out on that. Really, the last time I listened to 105 was around January of this year...I was listening to the Greaseman and laughed my ass off.

My Rock 105 memories:

My family moved to Jax in 85...rock 105 was the standard for us. Even got my mom into Pink Floyd...I remember the morning zoo broadcasting from the RV that one time. Chris, JD, Radical Bradford. I was going to school out of state so when I moved to Jax permanent in 87, I was jonesing for the hard rock and metal but all I had was classic rock...I forget who the morning team was then...but I remember Arf was doing the local on-air spots for 1460 AM when they launched ZROCK.

Then it was Arf in the morning...The King during midday, Rick Tracy at PM drive. I can still hear Ricks voice in my head...along with Arf imitating him. I forget who was doing nights...I met him a couple of times...longish curly hair..forget the name though. He was the guy that would play Saigon Kick and Extreme songs when they first came out.

Rockline...Metal Shop...King Biscuit Flower Hour...the Jazz show on sunday mornings..Electric lunch...

I remember when they had the request-a-thon and they swore that they'd play it if you requested it...and of course, you had to pledge..they'd even NOT play a song if you pledged enough. A bunch of us called to request Metallica (pre-black album era) and they finally played it.

I noticed changes in the station in 94 after I moved back from Orlando when they were playing "alternative" music on sunday nights...forgot the name of the show.

Funny thing is that while I preferred the classic hard rock tunes...Deep Purple, April Wine, UFO, Scorpions, etc...I admit that I now occasionally miss the play list that 105 had....they were ballsy...they played the popular classic rock bands but they at the very least still played deep cuts....when I finally picked up all the Zeppellin records, I realized that I'd heard most of them on 105. Best bet these days is one of the classic rock stations on Sirius/XM

Rock 105 will be missed....

BTW, the new Rock 1045 just reposted the job for APD/Afternoons. Chumley would have been a great choice for the gig but maybe his no compete got in the way of pursuing him. He'd be awesome there - great guy in the building, good jock, bright programmer. Sad to see my Planet go away because of the unwillingness to lighten the spotload immediately, which is something he couldn't control. The adjustment came too late but what bums me out is that they didn't wait until PPM, which has helped rock and alt stations (esp 98ROCK here in Tampa). CC did fill a hole in the market, but I thought that Kiss would probably be the one to flip, not Planet...but I'm just an outsider now so I don't know anything about what went into that decision. I saw that Klinger landed in Atlanta & that's awesome for him because ATL is home. Nobody mentioned that on the boards but congrats to him. Just hope to see Chum return to the airwaves in Jax - hard working dude with market equity makes a ton of sense.

Someone mentioned Radical Bradford? Would it be Brad Mitchell ? If so, Wow! blast from the past . Worked side by side with Radical in Colorado . Saw the opening in AA too. Yes! I applied , along with 400 others ;D Would love to get a call back or email . Worth a shot .

When the Rude Zoo left around '87 they were replaced with Annie and some horrible dude who was gone in about 6 months. Annie stayed on to be partnered with Arf in the morning until '91 or '92. My coworkers and I would make it a point to catch the "Mindbender" in which they'd play 3 unrelated songs and you'd try to figure out the theme among them. Arf was eventually replaced by Lex, who returned after years of being away. He used to do middays in the 80s. Annie stayed for a while but left after being relegated to being the newsgirl after Terry came.

I got an XL new old Rock 105 shirt. $20 this sucker is yours....

I remember Mindbender....MAD MONDAYS!!!! No night was complete without "Get the Led out".

Electric lunch baby. What's going on with no web site for Rock 1045? Keep getting directed to Facebook, seriously?

As the story goes, back in the day when they coined WFYV it stood for "F--- You Vick", the station owner or GM at the time. Of course, its not too suprising to read that ye olde Rock 105 is gone the way of the mammoth, just makes me a bit sad. Little by little, our legendary stations are evolving into new incarnations doing their best to compete with grooveshark, pandora and 8gb portable playlists. My own Jax radio history doesn't go back too far, but it still makes me feel nostalgic to reminisce the jocks that have moved on to greener airwaves or employment. Kinda makes me wonder; will radio even be a form of entertainment in 10 years? All these different companies, each hacking away limbs can't leave much more personality than an ipod nano. Is that really the result of the market speaking or is it more the bean counters redefining a medium? Oh well, rest in peace Rock 105! Good thing those studio walls can't talk!

Would that be Vic Aderhold the original Rock 105 GM? At the time, WFYV was co-owned and co-located with WPDQ-AM 1460 and was owned by Ragan Henry's Broadcast Enterprises Network, Inc. (BENI) and was later sold to Norman Wain's Metroplex Communications. I don't believe Vic was ever an outright owner although he may have held an equity position in the station.

Most likely you're right. I remember WPDQ being talked about from time to time, but wasn't it on 600am before it became WBWL? It gets confusing to me with all the ways the current Cox roster has flipped and flopped around the past 20 years, not to mention all the different companies that have owned them before Cox.

Back on topic; as redneck as some people always thought of Rock 105 (and their audience I suppose) it'll surely be missed. It seems like every time I went to the mechanic, the laundrymat, a dive bar or even a pool hall it was playing in the background. I even remember a 12 year old kid telling me "My daddy raised me on this station"... I believed him. Could be true for many thousands of Jacksonvillians, since what, the early 80's? Of course we can all build a playlist on youtube but can we hear Rick Tracy or Joanie Maverick setting the stage for us or telling us who invented the rock and roll horns? I can listen to the Scorpions, Pink Floyd or Ozzy anytime I want, but I'll miss the personalities who helped define that station over the years now that the Rock has rolled.

It does get confusing when the various stations play "musical call letters and musical frequencies" as has happened in the past.

Originally WPDQ was on AM 600 but moved to AM 1460 while WMBR moved from AM 1460 to AM 600 in a frequency move in the 1970s. The WPDQ call letters were also on AM 690 (now WOKV) and on the former FM 92.7 Green Cove Springs, ending up coming back to AM 600 before AM 600 became WBWL.

Originally WFYV-FM 104.5 was WJNJ-FM and was only 3,000 watts on 104.9. It was also co-owned with WJNJ-AM 1600 (now WQOP) Atlantic Beach. The 104.5 100kw frequency was originally assigned to Saint Augustine but never went on the air in Saint Augustine. The Ragan Henry group (Broadcast Enterprises Network, Inc. (BENI)) petitioned the FCC to re-assign 104.5 C from Saint Augustine to Atlantic Beach as a substitute for 104.9 A, replacing 104.5 C Saint Augustine with 105.5 A. The 105.5 A Saint Augustine frequency was later moved to 94.1 C3 (now WSOS-FM) while 105.5 was re-assigned to Saint Augustine Beach as a C3.

As you can see there were many moves and changes over the years which can be confusing. I'm surprised I remember any of it.

Still trying to understand new format. Like it but shouldn't the play list be HUGE if you are playing new rock and classic rock that really rocks? I keep hearing the same tunes over and over. Not sure what was leftover from Rock 105 that made it to the new playlist. Thoughts?

They're supposed to be Active Rock. 50% new, 40% 90's-00's gold ,10% 70's-80's hard classic rock.

Does anyone know what the call letters stand for? I have a hypothesis.

FYV is for the number five (5) as in Rock 105. The call letters WFIV were already taken and assigned to AM 1080 Kissimmee (Orlando) when WFYV went on the air.

You just made my week. Thank you for being a true partner in our radio adventures. I had the time of my life, learned a lot, cranked it up to 11, and loved the station and its listeners during my time in Jax.

RIP, 105. Long live rock!!
