RIP Rock 105

It apparently was killed off sometime before I turned on the radio at 5pm. Classic heavy active rocker is what we have here now. Jockless, too, just like 102.9. But there was no reason to kill "Rock 105". Mass confusion shall now set in southwest of town, where "Rock 104" is an already established brand.

Ok call on the flip, terrible call on the new name.

Yes bad call on the name change. They could have left the name alone for crying out loud. Rock 105 was heritage. What a good way to kill a 30 year old brand name people in Jacksonville knew. Wow that would be like putting a new name on WQIK or the Big Ape. Insulting Cox....just insulting. Now we have to call it Rock 104.5....def not something that will stick...it will always be Rock 105 to me.

I think in time the name change will sink in, but for now it seems like a mouthful to add one more digit. I could joke that maybe someone feared Andy Johnson would launch a classic rocker and cause mass confusion, but I won't.

Seriously, consultants have been harping on FM band branding for at least 20 years. A columnist on All Access used to say, "You wouldn't just tell a house guest the block you lived on, you'd give 'em the complete house number." The FM dial here used to be full of approximations--Y-103, Z93, W101, 97 WAIV, etc. but the Rock 105 name kept on going because it still functioned just fine.

So all of us geezers and Jax natives know where Rock 105 is on the dial, of course, and most of us will call it "Rock 105" (whether or not we mean to) for several years to come. I won't be offended as long as Cox isn't!

Once or twice a year I still hear someone refer to WAPE as "Power 95." But they can't be P1's, can they? LOL

And actually, not long after Gator Country moved in, WQIK DID tweak its name. It was never 99 "point one" until a few years ago. It was "FM 99."

Yeah, yeah, yeah.....and the greatest rock station of the 60s and 70s, WMMS in Cleveland was 101 FM forever....and they changed it to 100.7 and didn't miss a beat. In fact, one only needs to look at their wikipedia entry to see the early 101 FM and later 100.7 designation.

Likewise WSB-FM was FM99 for years and went to B98 without missing a beat.

It is what it is.

Don't feel too badly about Rock 105. WFYV basically just modernized it's music list and slightly changed its branding from Rock 105 to Rock 104.5. Also, according to the Cox Radio press release, much of the core classic rock will remain in music rotation. For the most part, WFYV is just a lot fresher and livelier with more music energy going from Classic Rock to Active Rock. Let's keep our fingers crossed this turns out to be a good fit for The New Rock 104.5.

When Rock 105 first came to be, it was on 104.9, a Class A 3kW channel. At that point, the name "Rock 105" made sense. When owner BENI moved the station to the high-powered Class C channel on 104.5, for one reason or another they stayed with the "105" name.

I was the station's first production director...The original (104.9) studios were in a trailer in the marsh alongside, IIRC, Atlantic Blvd., in Atlantic Beach. The business office/production "studios" (if you could call it that!) where I worked was in a beat up strip mall in Atlantic Beach.

When the station went to 104.5, the new transmitter site was 9090 Hogan Road, where the new studio building was being built (for Rock 105 and co-owned WPDQ). In the meantime, we DJ'ed out of an RV at the base of the tower. THAT was an adventure worthy of a novel!

Long Live Rock 105!!!

Most definiately, WGVL was one of the best progressive FM stations that ever existed. "Your FM Quadship" was among my favorite stations in the 70s which also included WORJ Orlando and WAIV (WAVE 97 - pre V 97) Jacksonville.

It seems as if "Rock 1045" is having trouble getting a new website up. I wonder if it has anything to do with that there are already many "104.5" rock stations out there, which means many of the domain names have been taken. So on that note, What do you think the chances are that 104.5 will have a new name but the same format?

David Reaves we miss you. You're not only a mega production pro but a first class person as well as top notch air personality !!!!

There are always all sorts of possibilities for a domain name. Some examples might include wfyv1045.com; wfyvrock1045.com; and rock1045online.com; However the domain rock1045.com is already registered, having been was created on 2-24-2009 but is currenly not hosted, and it also appears to be for sale

Same songs over and over, listen for 5 days and hear how many times you hear Guns and Roses....geez, here we go again.

Oh, it gets even better. Friday at 5:35 both 104.5 and 102.9 playing the same artist, Three Days Grace. BTLS promoting that Shark at Cox in Tampa handling playlist duties. Start placing your bets on where L&T land in Freakville, or try to pull in Rock 104 (yeah the other one) in Gainesville. Perhaps they will now move to "Rock 1037"? Hmmmmm, this is fun.

Are you by any chance the same David Reaves who was once the program director at WGVL-FM Gainesville in the '70s?

That was me alright. LOTS of turbulent water under the bridge since then!! I started at WGGG in high school. After WGVL, (which WAS an incredible station!) I went to Rock 105 for three years, then became more engineering-oriented. Eventually, I became the CE of Z100 in New York from 1988 to 1996, then worked as a tech for NBC at 30 Rock, then co-founded TransLanTech Sound, where I developed the Ariane audio processors.

Announcing and production was a ton of fun! But I was never good enough to make any decent money at it. :(

Kind Regards,
David

Thanks for the compliments, vtdude, whoever and wherever you are! You have a long memory! I haven't worked in Florida since, IIRC, 1982.

I should mention that there was another David Reaves in Jacksonville, who worked for WIVY when it was progressive. Never met him (even though I worked in Jax for three years), but from what I recall hearing about him, his reputation was stellar.
To add to the confusion, I also worked very briefly for WIVY (overnights) in 1974, when it had just turned top 40 and before it was Y103. But they made me change my name, so I called myself "Steve Parks."

But, hey, I'll take accolades where I can get 'em, deserved or not!! So, thanks!! LOL!

David

I'm late in putting my two cents worth here, simply because I'm not from Jacksonville.

But I LOVED the old format. When I would visit Florida, I often would insist on NOT taking a flight and driving the whole day, or day and a half, just so I could tune into what I thought was the best playlist I'd ever heard from a classic rocker from the drive from Georgia to Daytona Beach.

I thought the Cowhead Show was brilliant, Greaseman a legend, and even got excited when, as a Pittsburgh native, I would hear Dan Marino do car ads.

But what I really enjoyed was the '80s intensive playlist. I've always felt too many classic rockers practically ignore that era, which is clearly my favorite. To me- a drive through Jacksonville was being 17 again and watching Adam Curry- NOT RIKKI RACHMAN BUT ADAM CURRY- give me the Headbangers Ball from midnight to 3 a.m. every Saturday night-Sunday morning.

People can tell me that era is now, at minimum, 20 years old and up to 30. That I've hit middle age now and it's time I let that era go. That we're going to have the 20-year revival of a past culture and revive the '90s in this era the way the '80s bands were revived at the beginning of the last decade and grunge took particular pride in killing the '80s rock sound (and with it, I would argue, killing rock music).

But to them I would argue that AC/DC was as big as ever when they released their "Black Ice" album two years ago. That Kiss is doing Dr. Pepper commericals. That Bret Michaels is bigger now than he was when "Every Rose Had It's Thorn" was the No. 1 single in the country and Jon Bon Jovi is bigger than when Slippery When Wet and New Jersey topped the charts, Dee Snider is on Broadway, and Motley is about to become a movie.

Or maybe I should ask this- why does it seem a '70s intensive playlist is more acceptable than an '80s intensive one is? I thought 50 was the age when advertisers no longer cared about you.

Okay, it's a personal preference. And all good things must come to an end, and AC/DC is still being played.

But man, I can't be the only one who hates grunge, rap-rock, and thinks modern heavy metal with its shaved heads and tattoos is simply music to go to prison to.
