RKO big announcement:RUSH

They have Andy Dean listed during AM drive now. Isn't he that 12-year-old kid who was on briefly (but I forget whether it was 1200 or 96.9)?

Pairing McPhee with Todd Feinburg is a terrible idea. McPhee is an obnoxious loudmouth who can't carry on a conversation without resorting to over-the-top dramatic language; it seems like her favorite words are "egregious," "outrageous" and "insane." How she has lasted this long going from TV to radio is a testament to the ignorance of station execs. Todd is not the most cerebral host but he can keep a topic going without sounding like he's 'shouting off a back porch in East Boston.' That pairing cannot possibly last long.

I pity the WRKO board-op with the task of trying to wake her up at 4 AM - she is not a morning person.

Jay Severn mornings on RKO? Or the return of Katz?

Not to pile on, but I guess it's safe to say Katz didn't leave at "10 sharp" on Monday?

@Spackle: Andy Dean is heard on SiriusXM.

his show is live 3-6,and they have him 5-10am??? Its all taped delay but making a 3 hr show into 5 come on??

I wonder with re-upping Howie and getting Rush (there's a 1-2 punch that will make sure I never tune in if I ever saw one) if they'll try to move it to FM. 97.7 ? I'm sure WAAF can do just fine on 107.3 solo and own the metro-west. And those die hards that could only get it on 97.7 can find it online or on one of their HDs ?

Just a guess, I wouldn't want to see it happen, I'll take music over talk anyday (not that there is music there in the AM's anyway) but just a hunch.

They could just blow up WAAF all together and combine all 3 and go Hill-Man > Rush > Howie for an all talk FM too.

I hate when I predict things I'd hate to see happen, ha.

I don't know if RKO would // on 97.7 or 107.3. They need the 97.7 to bring the WAAF signal into Boston etc. Would they sacrifice the rock (it makes them $) on one station or the other? RKO is a pretty solid signal...
though at night it suffers to the west.
By day they will have Todd and Michele, financial stuff, Kuhner, Rush and Howie (though earlier sunsets are on the way) on a fairly good AM signal. By night? Savage, Doyle, and Coast 2 Coast can be found elsewhere if need be. (to the west, north, and south)

btw overnights--RKO gets C2C so does 1200 pick up Redeye? Bohannon?
Noon: it will be all syndicated folks: Rush on 680, Smerc on 96.9 and who knows what on 1200 (John Gibson?) I don't know if 96.9 would shift a local host into the noon slot--they do like Smerc I think but maybe they could hire a local host (Jeff Katz? :) )

I do not see Entercom blowing up AAF. The last time I checked and this was quite a few years ago they made good money. There demo is attractive to the Beer Companies and anyone else who wants to reach a 18-34 year old white male. Except for Greg Hill they aren't paying those people big salaries.

As someone who ran a station that had a very old demo it is a tough sell. I don't think moving RKO to FM is going to attract a significant number of younger people. RKO's audience is not getting younger. The local ads do you hear on there these days are a Caddy dealer, a company that ships your car to Florida, Belmont Medical Supply, Bill Kelly and the like.

If Entercom was going to split signal I think they would have to do a talk format that appealed to a younger demo. I would consider doing a hot talk format with a FM signal but moving RKO to FM is not going to bring back the glory days of the early 80's.

The PD at 96.9 is a huge Smerc fan.

Audio of the announcement.

Yes no way Ent blows up both AAFs and prob not even one AAF given the demos.

>>attractive to the Beer Companies and anyone else who wants to reach a 18-34 year old white male.

Some of whom also may be attracted to the Harbor. Again, boring. Predictable. PROFITABLE. Nuff said.

>>RKO's audience is not getting younger.

People like me, 50, and we're not wanted (as much...) Yeah it might be interesting to get it on FM but may nt happen (sports talk on the other hand has several diff demos including younger people, hence 93.7 has WEEI).

Two years is a long time...but that's how long Entercom has Howie. I think the landscape for talk is going to look quite different in 2014. I don't see Entercom blowing up 107.3 or even 97.7 for the format, even in a hybrid form. That rock simulcast has been a steady performer for them. I don't think Howie is going to fall back in love with the suits on Guest Street if they were to move his show to FM. He wants out, once he gets a couple more million out of them, and by then he may want to hang up the cans. Then where does that leave 680? Even with Rush, who also may be getting close to retirement, there's not much there. Plus, it's two more years of the 55+ angry white men who listen to right wing AM talk dying off. Personally, I don't think WRKO will last the full 24 months. I think they'll eventually pull the plug and go birdfed/brokered before that, just as Talk 1200 just did.

The angry white men are on the Left too, like those Occupy guys who wanted to blow up the Breckville Bridge nr Cleveland :) It could be diff in 2014. Would 96.9 still be around for him to jump to? And age wise Howie's getting up there (60 now but who knows...hey even Imus is still on. Somewhere.)

>>He wants out, once he gets a couple more million out of them
If there's still a demand he can move his show to his own "Southern Command".. :p)

In a couple years....Brother Stair (if still alive by then)? La Mega 68?

I'm shocked.

Never in a million years did I think Clear Channel would let Rush Limbaugh and George Noory (whose shows are syndicated by CC subsidiary Premiere Networks) leave a CC-owned station and go "across the street" (or in this case, down the dial).

The firings of Jeff Katz and Jay Severin suggest to me that talk is done at 1200. The format's days are numbered. CC is waiting until CBS launches their new all-sports radio network (or such time that WBZ-FM-98.5, a/k/a "The Sports Hub", drops Fox Sports Radio).

Once "The Sports Hub" is no longer carrying FSR, expect 1200 to become a 24/7 Fox Sports affiliate, possibly with local college sports (from independent packagers who pay for the airtime).

And after that happens, there could be more changes at WRKO-680 and WTKK-96.9. I could see live clearances of Glenn Beck on either station, and maybe even a live clearance of Hannity at 'TKK.
