RO selling off the Mix signals

Barry Manilow is not Mix’s target demo.
I haven't listened to WLNK in quite a while except just tuning by it. But I thought they were AC and Barry Manilow song is AC. Anyway, my mistake.
What about “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” by Green Day?
I was trying to avoid Good Riddance, Closing time, Just a song before I go, Highway to Hell et al.
Maybe "Fire" by Arthur Brown.
Seriously, I was looking for an APPROPRIATE song. I thought "Once before I Go" seemed innocent enough.
And yes, I see that if it doesn't hit the target demo it wouldn't work. But at that moment do they actually even care about the target demo? They could play "Last Dance" by Donna Summer or "Take This Job and Shove It" by Johnny Paycheck.
Or Roger Whittaker's "The Last Farewell."

They’re pop from 90s to now. Aren’t most of those songs 70s?

I thought about Closing Time, but I thought Good Riddance would be more appropriate.

“It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday” or “End of the Road” by Boyz II Men would also fit. Maybe “Bye Bye Bye” by NSYNC, “Thnks fr th Mmrs” by Fall Out Boy, or “I’ll Be Missing You” by Puff Daddy/Faith Evans.

If you go a little older, what about “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” by Simple Minds, “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” by Journey, “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” by Guns n Roses, “Never Can Say Goodbye” by Jackson 5, “Landslide” by Fleetwood Mac. Those are all out of the demo.

I’m pretty sure I’ve heard the first two on Mix recently. They do play 80s music. They were playing “Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson when I checked 99.3 earlier.

Edit: they also just played “I Love Rock & Roll” by Joan Jett.

I hardly ever listen to the station so I don’t know, but isn’t their tagline “90s, 2000s and today”? Why brand yourself if you’re not going to abide by it? That’s a pet peeve of mine.

The first song played on 107.9 as The Link was The Wallflowers One Headlight...that should be the last song played.
That’s a good song. Full circle moment. They still have that song in rotation on K104.7.

When are they pulling the plug? Sunday at midnight? I guess “The Final Countdown” is on… another good song.

I am sorry to see WLNK come to an end after a long run as The Link and later Mix. There should be a spot somewhere for Hot AC, as CHR tends to become repetitive, and AC offers a bit more variety. But perhaps 102.9 and 104.7 are somewhat filling that void as variety hits, or however format they may be classified. But maybe WLNK will reemerge somewhere in the future, since the call letters have been preserved. I still say the best years was the heyday of The Link with Bob and Sheri, Pam Stone, and Matt and Ramona. But the recent hosts were all good, I just think over the years the music mix could have been improved at times. But I thought their ad revenue, demographics and cume numbers were good when they were on 107.9, despite mid tier ratings. I wish everyone good luck at this changing time.

And could the end of WLNK provide an opportunity for WHQC to flip to Hot AC? Or are they better off as the number 2 CHR against 95.1? Is there a need for 2 CHR stations with similar formats? Although 96.1 differentiates just a bit with a few older classics mixed in. Would the Fred show also fit on Hot AC if they chose? Maybe hire Matt, Liz, Holly for other dayparts? Just speculating. They may prefer to keep 96.1 as is. But maybe another opportunity for WLNK will reemerge elsewhere later down the road.

Until 1978, 107.9 was Beautiful Music. Thereafter, it’s been a variation of AC, Hot AC, Top 40, etc - WBCY, B108, Hits 107.9, Sunny, The Link, and Mix. After tonight, it will be the end of those variations of Pop music coming out of 1 Julian Price Pl for a span of over 45 years. I’m sad. And why can’t AC or Hot AC make it in Charlotte? It’s one of my favorite formats.

(Thanks test123 for the date clarification.)

I haven’t listened that often since the signal move, just when I can get 99.3 really, but they seem to increase the 80s on the weekend. I can only guess it was a last ditch effort to get some listeners from K and The Lake.

In 1978 it was "Charlotte's Best Rock." Broadcasting Yearbook listed it as AOR but only WROQ was AOR (it was listed as "adult rock", whatever that was). WBCY in its early days sounded like Top 40 to me. Then when the Observer would list radio stations by format, WBCY was eventually called AC. It was even being advertised as softer than some other stations. Not sure what those other stations were, but WROQ was loud. The commercial had "While You See a Chance" by Steve Winwood. By the time WROQ was CHR, so was WBCY again.

I've been saying WHQC should do this ever since The Link moved.
