ROAD TRIP TIME!

Finally, after a long break from any overnight vacations, I'm finally doing another one.

Saturday Morning-Labor Day afternoon I will be in the Portland, OR area (Darthvader are you listening?), with a couple stops along the way at Centralia, WA and Kalama, WA. Nights I will be at the Hampton Inn, Gresham, OR on NE 181st. Anything that I should look out for?
When I was in Portland a year ago, I stayed at the Comfort Inn near PDX Airport. Nasty amount of noise on AM forced me to go outside to DX, and I got several regulars, including I think KSTP 1500-MN.
I'll be busy with a lot of activities + shopping, especially in the Downtown area.

-crainbebo

P.S. Usually I don't tell you logs until I get back since I don't have a laptop or smartphone, but I may be able to if I am in the hotel. Not sure how much it will cost to use the hotel computer...

Be sure to fire off a private message to me when you're in town, if you're able to. It'd be interesting to meet up somewhere, preferrably on this side of the river!

Read my first post. I'll be busy with shopping and other things on the OR side, so I probably won't be able to go up to Vancouver at all.

crainbebo and Darth....

Sorry I'll miss you guys. As posted earlier, I'm in town just for the night on Sunday....and that's spoken for with a dinner with my niece. 3-way meetup would've been great. Perhaps another time.

Here's wishing crainbebo a safe, fun trip and great DX. Perhaps we'll be able to compare notes.

Got some bad news-the hotel I am staying at is just a mile from KFXX 1080 and KKSN 910's towers. So degradation of AM signals may be possible, day and night. :(

This is probably going to be my last post before my trip. Hopefully I'll get some good AM catches, even though I've got 1080 and 910, as well as 1230 KRYN, just blocks from me.

-crainbebo

If it's the same KKSN tower I'm thinking of (the one along Airport Way & NE 158th), they tore that one down last Fall. But being as close as you claim you'll be to KFXX's tower, you'll probably still get a bit of overload from it, yeah. But I don't think it'd be nearly as bad as trying to tune anything within the vicinity of the way-overdriven KKAD/KPAM towers!

Good luck!

I'm here in Portland now. Have some highlights to share, then I'll post again before I head to bed.

First, KVI, KIRO, KTTH, KJR and KOMO from Seattle all make it to North Portland (150 miles) in the daytime. My hotel is very close to KFXX so I may have reduced DX due to it tonight. But hoping for the best!

While on the road, I noticed KWPZ 106.5 Lynden in Maytown, as well as a tentative CIOC. Do they have public affairs programs on Saturdays? One more highlight: a 103.5 with Christian music. Only result is a KCMS translator in Astoria, OR, 60 mi away+!
Also: while at the Toutle River Rest Area S of Toledo, WA, KISM 92.9 was making it, plus most full-powered Seattle and Portland stations.
KXXO and KNBQ make it to the hotel (Rooster Rock/Capitol Peak), but for a weird reason, KOMO 97.7 does not make it. I wonder why? The last breath for Seattle was close to Three Rivers Mall in Kelso.
Weather is really nice here, sunny and around upper 70s. Will post again tonight. No fee to use the computer here!

Hope you're having a great trip.

Your experience with the Seattle stations making it to Portland are in line with mine. Here's another report for you (and darth) under the heading of "Two Way Street". In Victoria, BC today heading into town from the ferry terminal, there was KPOJ at 620 on my car radio. 11:30am. Weak, but still a nice surprise.

Tonight, the band is a bit "normal" for September. Here's some logs.

570 KVI fair
610 KONA strong
640 KFI strong
660 CFFR strong, as well as 670 KBOI.
710 KIRO strong
720 KDWN, KFIR and another to E-W, WGN??
760 KFMB poor-fair in 750 splash

1200 CJRJ fair

Heading to bed very shortly, getting up tomorrow and doing a ton of shopping around the OR side of the river.

-crainbebo

crainbebo, I used to live out near to where you are staying. At the end of 181st (going north) is where the new KFXX/KKSN towers are located. Across the river is KPAM/KKAD, so you have some RF in the neighborhood. The Safeway lot on 181 and Halsey is where I have done some good FM Dx'ing in past years with the car radio.

Agreed on the 181st St DX. Two more new logs today-KUOW 94.9 over KNRK IBOC, and KIRO 97.3 weak over KYCH's HD sideband. Both on the hotel's top floor (3rd). Will update with AM DX later.

-crainbebo

1360 was SS music, so likely KKMO. KUIK can be received daytime...

Spent time antiquing and shopping on the Oregon side today. Went over along Hawthorne Blvd and did some shopping, then got on 205 and went to Red Robin. Good food! Then went off to the Westmoreland district. I noticed coming back that KXXO comes in better the farther East you go. Do you get KXXO where you are W7PAT?

Crainbebo,

Yes, the Hawthorne area is where I grew up (near Mt. Tabor).
When conditions are good I can get KXXO. Some areas get KZEL.
The reason I asked about KUIK is that on the weekends KUIK has allot of programming in Spanish.
My wife and I took a trip up to Timberline Lodge today and for several miles I was hearing a Country station on 103.9. I never heard an id and I think it would be too far for the Ilwacco station.

Crainbebo....

Sounds like a great road trip. I'm in the Lloyd Center area south of downtown. I'll report anything I hear of interest (on AM) tonight in my "DXing the West" thread. ack at

One quick observation.... I'm not surprised you're hearing KFAB. I've been very impressed with their nighttime signal wherever I've been all week on my road trip. (Especially since they're pretty much invisible on their night pattern back at home in Northern Illinois.

My results from tonight on the "DXing the West" thread-sorry about that.

-crainbebo

P.S. Gotta be KVAS for that 103.9. I heard it over at Maytown as well.

Also-scratch out KLOO on 106.3-was looking at the wrong bandscan. Also: add an UNID 107.3 which was likely an xlator from Greenwater, in Maytown.

Today going to do some clothes shopping, get something to eat, and then head back on the three+ hour drive back to Seattle. Sure been a fun trip!
